| 4 | Strategies for combating bacterial biofilm infections显示文摘Formation of biofilm is a survival strategy for bacteria and fungi to adapt to their living environment, especially in the hostile environment. Under the protection of biofilm, microbial cells in biofilm become tolerant and resistant to antibiotics and the immune responses, which increases the difficulties for the clinical treatment of biofilm infections. Clinical and laboratory investigations demonstrated a perspicuous correlation between biofilm infection and medical foreign bodies or indwelling devices. Clinical observations and experimental studies indicated clearly that antibiotic treatment alone is in most cases insufficient to eradicate biofilm infections. Therefore, to effectively treat biofilm infections with currently available antibiotics and evaluate the outcomes become important and urgent for clinicians. The review summarizes the latest progress in treatment of clinical biofilm infections and scientific investigations, discusses the diagnosis and treatment of different biofilm infections and introduces the promising laboratory progress,which may contribute to prevention or cure of biofilm infections. | 7 | How Could Agricultural Land Systems Contribute to Raise Food Production Under Global Change?显示文摘To feed the increasing world population,more food needs to be produced from agricultural land systems.Solutions to produce more food with fewer resources while minimizing adverse environmental and ecological consequences require sustainable agricultural land use practices as supplementary to advanced biotechnology and agronomy.This review paper,from a land system perspective,systematically proposed and analyzed three interactive strategies that could possibly raise future food production under global change.By reviewing the current literatures,we suggest that cropland expansion is less possible amid fierce land competition,and it is likely to do less in increasing food production.Moreover,properly allocating crops in space and time is a practical way to ensure food production.Climate change,dietary shifts,and other socio-economic drivers,which would shape the demand and supply side of food systems,should be taken into consideration during the decision-making on rational land management in respect of sustainable crop choice and allocation.And finally,crop-specific agricultural intensification would play a bigger role in raising future food production either by increasing the yield per unit area of individual crops or by increasing the number of crops sown on a particular area of land.Yet,only when it is done sustainably is this a much more effective strategy to maximize food production by closing yield and harvest gaps. | WU Wen-bin YU Qiang-yi Verburg H Peter YOU Liang-zhi YANG Peng TANG Hua-jun | 2014 | Journal of Integrative Agriculture2014,13,7: | 19 |

| 9 | Effects of combined splenorenal shunt devascularization and devascularization only on hemodynamics of the portal venous system in patients with portal hypertension显示文摘Shunt and devascularization have totally different effects on hemodynamics of the portal venous system , and the actual results of combined shunt and devascularization should be determined by more clinical observations. This study aimed to evaluate effects on hemodynamics of the portal venous system after conventional spleno-renal shunt combined with pericardial devascularization and pericardial devascularization only. METHODS: In 20 patients who had received conventional splenorenal shunt combined with pericardial devascularization(CP) and 18 who had received pericardial devascularization and splenectomy (PCDV), hemodynamic parameters of the portal venous system were studied by magnetic resonance angiography 1 week before and 2 weeks after operation. Free portal pressure was detected continuously by a transducer during the operation. RESULTS: Compared to the preoperative data, a decreased flow of the portal vein (PVF) (563.12±206.42 ml/min vs 1080.63±352.85 ml/min, P<0.05), a decreased diameter of the portal vein (PVD) (1.20±0.11 cm vs 1.30±0.16 cm, P<0.01 ), a decreased free portal preasure ( FPP ) (21.50±2.67 mmHg vs 29.88±2.30 mmHg, P<0.01) and an increased flow of the superior mesenteric vein (SMVF) (1105.45±309.03 ml/min vs 569.13±178.46 ml/min, P < 0.05) were found in the CP group after operation; a decreased PVD (1.27±0.16 cm vs 1.40±0.23 cm, P<0.05), a decreased PVF (684.60±165.73 ml/min vs 1175.64±415.09 ml/min, P<0.05), a decreased FPP (24.40±3.78 mmHg vs 28.80±3.56 mmHg, P<0.05) and an increased SMVF (697.91+121.83 ml/min vs 521.30±115.82 ml/min, P<0.05) were found in the PCDV group. After operation, the PVF of CP group (563.12±206.42 ml/min vs 684.60±165.73 ml/min, P>0.05) was not decreased significantly while FPP (21.50±2.67 mmHg vs 24.40±3.78 mmHg, P< 0.01) was decreased significantly as compared with that of the PCDV group. PVF and FPP could be decreased by both surgical procedures, but the effect of decreasing FPP is much better in the combined procedures than in PCDV. Cyclosporine orsplenectomy alone could not prolong theSurvival time, however, their combination couldcompletely repress the rejection of liver grafts.The survival time of animals were significantlyprolonged (37.1 days ). The architecture ofhepatic lobules was preserved. | 17 | Spatio-Temporal Changes in the Rice Planting Area and Their Relationship to Climate Change in Northeast China: A Model-Based Analysis显示文摘Rice is one of the most important grain crops in Northeast China(NEC)and its cultivation is sensitive to climate change.This study aimed to explore the spatio-temporal changes in the NEC rice planting area over the period of 1980-2010 and to analyze their relationship to climate change.To do so,the CLUE-S(conversion of land use and its effects at small region extent)model was first updated and used to simulate dynamic changes in the rice planting area in NEC to understand spatio-temporal change trends during three periods:1980-1990,1990-2000 and 2000-2010.The changing results in individual periods were then linked to climatic variables to investigate the climatic drivers of these changes.Results showed that the NEC rice planting area expanded quickly and increased by nearly 4.5 times during 1980-2010.The concentration of newly planted rice areas in NEC constantly moved northward and the changes were strongly dependent on latitude.This confirmed that climate change,increases in temperature in particular,greatly influenced the shift in the rice planting area.The shift in the north limit of the NEC rice planting area generally followed a 1°C isoline migration pattern,but with an obvious time-lag effect.These findings can help policy makers and crop producers take proper adaptation measures even when exposed to the global warming situation in NEC. | XIA Tian WU Wen-bin ZHOU Qing-bo YU Qiang-yi Peter H Verburg YANG Peng LU Zhong-jun TANG Hua-jun | 2014 | Journal of Integrative Agriculture2014,13,7: | 12 |
