| 2 | Optimal management for alcoholic liver disease: Conventional medications, natural therapy or combination?显示文摘Alcohol consumption is the principal factor in thepathogenesis of chronic liver diseases.Alcoholic liver disease(ALD)is defined by histological lesions on the liver that can range from simple hepatic steatosis to more advanced stages such as alcoholic steatohepatitis,cirrhosis,hepatocellular carcinoma and liver failure.As one of the oldest forms of liver injury known to humans,ALD is still a leading cause of liver-related morbidity and mortality and the burden is exerting on medical systems with hospitalization and management costs rising constantly worldwide.Although the biological mechanisms,including increasing of acetaldehyde,oxidative stress with induction of cytochrome p4502E1,inflammatory cytokine release,abnormal lipid metabolism and induction of hepatocyte apoptosis,by which chronic alcohol consumption triggers serious complex progression of ALD is well established,there is no universally accepted therapy to prevent or reverse.In this article,we have briefly reviewed the pathogenesis of ALD and the molecular targets for development of novel therapies.This review is focused on current therapeutic strategies for ALD,including lifestyle modification with nutrition supplements,available pharmacological drugs and new agents that are under development,liver transplantation,application of complementary medicines,and their combination.The relevant molecular mechanisms of each conventional medication and natural agent have been reviewed according to current available knowledge in the literature.We also summarized efficacy vs safety on conventional and herbal medicines which are specifically used for the prevention and treatment of ALD.Through a system review,this article highlighted that the combination of pharmaceutical drugs with naturally occurring agents may offer an optimal management for ALD and its complications.It is worthwhile to conduct large-scale,multiple centre clinical trials to further prove the safety and benefits for the integrative therapy on ALD. | Moon-Sun Kim Madeleine Ong Xianqin Qu | 2016 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2016,22,1: | 13 |
| 3 | Graft-accelerated virus-induced gene silencing facilitates functional genomics in rose flowers显示文摘Rose has emerged as a model ornamental plant for studies of flower development, senescence, and morphology, as well as the metabolism of floral fragrances and colors.Virus-induced gene silencing(VIGS) has long been used in functional genomics studies of rose by vacuum infiltration of cuttings or seedlings with an Agrobacterium suspension carrying TRV-derived vectors. However, VIGS in rose flowers remains a challenge because of its low efficiency and long time to establish silencing. Here we present a novel and rapid VIGS method that can be used to analyze gene function in rose,called ‘graft-accelerated VIGS', where axil ary sprouts are cut from the rose plant and vacuum infiltrated with Agrobacterium. The inoculated scions are then grafted back onto the plants to flower and silencing phenotypes can be observed within 5 weeks, post-infiltration. Using this new method, we successfully silenced expression of the RhDFR_1, RhA G, and RhNUDX_1 in rose flowers, and affected their color, petal number, as well as fragrance, respectively. This grafting method will facilitate high-throughput functional analysis of genes in rose flowers. | 4 | Inheritance of Perpetual Blooming in Rosa chinensis ‘Old Blush'显示文摘Perpetual blooming is one of the most important biological and economical traits in modern rose, while the genetic basis underlining the control of this trait is poorly investigated. With an aim in dissecting the genetic determinism of perpetual blooming, we developed six rose populations(OB, W, F1, F2, BC1 OB and BC1W) derived from a WOB population [interspecific diploid hybridization between Rosa chinensis ‘Old Blush'(OB) and R. wichuriana ‘Basye's Thornless'(W)]. Perpetual blooming is absent both in a F1 population with 296 individuals and a BC1 W population(W as the backcross parent) with 150 individuals. However, the perpetual blooming trait showed a typical 3︰1 segregation in a backcross population BC1 OB with OB as the backcross parent. In this population with 300 individuals, 83 plants had the perpetual blooming phenotype while the other 217 featured non-perpetual blooming, indicating that the perpetual blooming trait is very likely controlled by two recessive genes in R. chinensis(rpb1 and rpb2). It was found that the aluminum borate whisker was effective to suppress the crystallization of aluminum phosphates in the aluminum borate whisker/aluminum phosphates composites and contributed to the improvement of the mechanical properties. After sintered at 1050℃ for 1 h, the flexural strength of the composites with 30 vol% aluminum borate whisker addition reached 215.3 MPa. All the experimental data passed a point to point consistency test of Van Ness method, which verified the data reliability. The Wilson and UNIQUAC activity coefficient models were employed to correlate the binary VLE data to obtain binary interaction parameters. Based on binary interaction parameters, ternary VLE data of ethanol(1) + ethyl propionate(2) + para-xylene(3) were predicted by Wilson and UNIQUAC models, which proved that predicted values are consistent with the experimental data.Furthermore, azeotropic phenomenon between ethanol and ethyl propionate disappears when the mole ratio of para-xylene and binary system of ethanol and ethyl propionate is 1:1. | 13 | Intrinsic properties of active sites for hydrogen production from alcohols without coke formation显示文摘The detailed reaction pathway and coke formation mechanism over Pt/metal oxide nanoparticles during the steam reforming of ethanol(SRE) at 300℃were studied.The catalysts were prepared by incipient wetness impregnation method and were characterized with CO pulse chemisorption, BET surface measurement,oxygen adsorption,ethanol-TPD,NH3-TPD,and TPO.The SRE activity of the catalysts with steam/ethanol molar ratio of 3/1 was tested using a continuous fixed-bed reactor.Strong interaction between Pt and supports causes lower H2 production temperatures and no C2H4 formation,while weak interaction leads to C2H4 formation and strong bonded CO on Pt particles during ethanol-TPD. | 19 | Efficient degradation of atrazine through in-situ anchoring NiCo_(2)O_(4) nanosheets on biochar to activate sulfite under neutral condition显示文摘Sulfite (S(IV)) is a promising substitute for sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes.Here,a composite of in-situ anchoring Ni Co_(2)O_(4)nanosheets on biochar (BC) was firstly employed as a heterogeneous activator for sulfite (Ni Co_(2)O_(4)@BC-sulfite) to degrade atrazine (ATZ) in the neutral environment.The synergistic coupling of BC and Ni Co_(2)O_(4)endows the resulting composite excellent catalytic activity.82% of the degradation ratio of ATZ (1 mg/L) could be achieved within 10 min at initial concentrations of 0.6 g/L Ni Co_(2)O_(4)@BC,3.0 mmol/L sulfite in neutral environment.When further supplementing sulfite into the system at 20 min (considering the depletion of sulfite),outstanding degradation efficiency (100%) were achieved in the next 10 min without any other energy input by the Ni Co_(2)O_(4)@BC-sulfite system.The features of the prepared catalysts and the effects of some key parameters on ATZ degradation were systematically examined.A strong inner-sphere complexation (≡Co_(2)+/Ni^(2+)-SO_(3)^(2-)) was explored between sulfite and the metal sites on the Ni Co_(2)O_(4)@BC surface.The redox cycle of the surface metal efficiently mediated sulfite activation and triggered the series radical chain reactions.The generated radicals,in particular the surface-bound radicals were involved in ATZ degradation.High performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS) technique was used to detect the degradation intermediates.Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to illustrate the possible degradation pathways of ATZ.Finally,an underlying mechanism for ATZ removal was proposed.The present study offered a low-cost and sustainable catalyst for sulfite activation to remove ATZ in an environmentally friendly manner from wastewater. | Lizhen Feng Yijin Yuan Xianqin He Mengsi Wu Lizhi Zhang Jingming Gong | 2023 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2023,,4: | 1 |
