| 1 | Research Progress on Heat Stress of Rice at Flowering Stage显示文摘Global warming has caused frequent occurrence of heat stress at the flowering stage of single-season rice in the Yangtze River region of China, which results in declines of spikelet fertility and yield in rice. Rice flowering stage is the most sensitive period to high temperatures, and therefore, the key for heat stress happening is the flowering stage coinciding with high temperature, which causes spikelet fertility decreasing in heat-sensitive varieties, and is the major factor for heat injury differences among various rice planting regions. With the development of rice breeding, temperature indexes for heat stress has been converted from daily maximum temperature of 35 oC to 38 oC with the stress duration of more than 3 d. During the flowering stage, anther dehiscence inhibition and low pollen shedding onto the stigma are two main reasons for spikelet fertility reduction under high temperatures. At panicle initiation stage, high temperatures aggravate spikelet degeneration, and destroy floral organ development. Various types of rice varieties coexist in production, and indica-japonica hybrid rice demonstrates the highest heat resistance in general, followed by indica and japonica rice varieties. In production, avoiding high temperature is the main strategy of preventing heat stress, and planting suitable cultivars and adjustment of sowing date are the most effective measures. Irrigation is an effective real-time cultivation measure to decline the canopy temperature during the rice flowering stage. We suggested that further study should be focused on exploring heat injury differences among different rice variety types, and innovating rice-planting methods according to planting system changes in rice planting regions with extreme heat stress. | 2 | Prediction of Primary Climate Variability Modes at the Beijing Climate Center显示文摘Climate variability modes, usually known as primary climate phenomena, are well recognized as the most important predictability sources in subseasonal–interannual climate prediction. This paper begins by reviewing the research and development carried out, and the recent progress made, at the Beijing Climate Center(BCC) in predicting some primary climate variability modes. These include the El Ni?o–Southern Oscillation(ENSO), Madden–Julian Oscillation(MJO), and Arctic Oscillation(AO), on global scales, as well as the sea surface temperature(SST) modes in the Indian Ocean and North Atlantic, western Pacific subtropical high(WPSH), and the East Asian winter and summer monsoons(EAWM and EASM, respectively), on regional scales. Based on its latest climate and statistical models, the BCC has established a climate phenomenon prediction system(CPPS) and completed a hindcast experiment for the period 1991–2014. The performance of the CPPS in predicting such climate variability modes is systematically evaluated. The results show that skillful predictions have been made for ENSO, MJO, the Indian Ocean basin mode, the WPSH, and partly for the EASM, whereas less skillful predictions were made for the Indian Ocean Dipole(IOD) and North Atlantic SST Tripole, and no clear skill at all for the AO, subtropical IOD, and EAWM. | 3 | Three dimensional velocity structure and accurate earthquake location in Changning–Gongxian area of southeast Sichuan显示文摘In order to understand the crustal structure and tectonic background of the Changning–Gongxiang area, southeastern Sichuan Province, where a series of moderate-to-strong earthquakes occurred in recent years, we utilized the seismic phase data both from a local dense array and from the regional seismic networks;we used the tomoDD program to invert for the high-resolution three-dimensional velocity structure within the depth range of 0–10 km and for accurate hypocentral locations in this area. We analyzed the seismogenic structures for the events of Xingwen M5.7 in 2018 and Gongxian M5.3 and Changning M6.0 in 2019. The results show that:(1) widespread lateral inhomogeneity exists in the velocity structure of the study area, and the location of the velocity anomaly is largely consistent with known structures. In the range of distinguishable depth, the inhomogeneity decreases with increasing depth, and the velocity structure anomalies in some areas are continuous in depth;(2) earthquakes occurred in clusters, showing the characteristics of zonal folding trends in the NW-SE and NE-SW directions;the focal depth in the area is generally shallow in both the sedimentary cap and the crystalline basement. The seismogenic structures of small earthquake clusters are different in size and occurrence in different sections, and the clusters occurred mostly in regions with high P-or S-wave velocities;(3) synthesis of a variety of data suggests that the seismogenic structures of the Xingwen M5.7 and Changning M6.0 earthquakes are associated with slip faults that trend NW-SE in, respectively, the south wing and the axis of the Changning–Shuanghe anticline, while that of the Gongxian M5.3 earthquake is associated with thrust faults that trend N-S in the Jianwu syncline region. | 8 | Loss of Gn1a/OsCKX2 confers heavy-panicle rice with excellent lodging resistance显示文摘Significant achievements have been made in breeding programs for the heavy-panicle-type(HPT)rice(Oryza sativa) in Southwest China. The HPT varieties now exhibit excellent lodging resistance,allowing them to overcome the greater pressures caused by heavy panicles. However, the genetic mechanism of this lodging resistance remains elusive. Here, we isolated a major quantitative trait locus, Panicle Neck Diameter 1(PND1), andidentified the causal gene as GRAIN NUMBER 1 A/CYTOKININ OXIDASE 2(Gn1 A/Os CKX2). The null gn1 a allele from rice line R498(gn1 aR498) improved lodging resistance through increasing the culm diameter and promoting crown root development.Loss-of-function of Gn1 a/Os CKX2 led to cytokinin accumulation in the crown root tip and accelerated the development of adventitious roots. Gene pyramiding between the null gn1 aR498 allele with two gain-of-function alleles, STRONG CULM 2(SCM2)and SCM3, further improved lodging resistance.Moreover, Gn1 a/Os CKX2 had minimal influence on overall rice quality. | 12 | Effects of Epichloë endophyte on antioxidant enzymes activities, photosynthesis and growth of three ecotypes of Elymus dahuricus显示文摘Fungal endophytes of some cultivated grasses can increase plant performance and competitive abilities,especially under stress. Far less is known about the influence of Epichlo? infections in wild populations of wild grasses. In this study, plants of three Elymus dahuricus ecotypes(WLS, QY and WTS) either infected with Epichlo? endophyte(E+) or uninfected(E–) were grown in the field. The activities of the antioxidant enzymes ascorbate peroxidase, catalase, peroxidase and superoxide dismutase, and concentrations of H_2O_2 and malondialdehyde were examined in the leaves of E+ and E– plants. We also determined photosynthesis parameters,leaf blade and sheath carbohydrate concentration and plant growth parameters of both E+ and E– plants. E+ plants from the WLS and QY populations had significantly higher antioxidant enzyme activities and photosynthetic capability(P < 0.05), superior growth characteristics including more abundant carbohydrate concentration than E– plants. In contrast, in plants from the WTS population,the endophyte had no significant effect on reactive oxygen species scavenging capability and growth performance(P > 0.05), and even displayed some negative effects on plant photosynthetic capability. | 14 | A review of Behcet's disease from the perspectives of both Western and Chinese Medicine显示文摘Behcet's disease is a condition with a complicated and unclear etiology that comprises multi-systemic, chronic, inflammatory vasculitis. Behcet's disease can affect every tissue and organ in the body,and is characterized by recurrent oral and genital ulcers, ocular inflammation, skin lesions, and other manifestations. The incidence of Behcet's disease has a distinct regional specificity, and is most prevalent along the Silk Road, a route that stretched between the Mediterranean, Middle East and Far East.This article reviews the recent literature to evaluate the prevalence, clinical manifestations, pathogenesis and mechanism, and current treatments of Behcet's disease. Furthermore, the etiology of Behcet's disease will be evaluated from the aspect of Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM) syndrome differentiation. As Behcet's disease is complex and intractable, its treatment warrants further research.Traditionally, Behcet's disease is treated with Western Medicine(WM) via medications that act locally and systemically; this WM treatment protocol usually has a good effect, but relapse can occur after reducing the dosage. Thus, it may be ideal to treat Behcet's disease via a combination of WM and TCM.Recent studies have indicated that such a combination of Chinese and Western treatments has a better effect than either treatment alone. The aim of the present review is to describe the clinical features of Behcet's disease, and to outline its possible pathogenesis in terms of both TCM and WM. | 17 | Surface modification with oxygen vacancy in Li-rich layered oxide Li1.2Mn0.54Ni0.13Co0.13O2 for lithium-ion batteries显示文摘A couple of layered Li-rich cathode materials Li1.2Mn0.54Ni0.13Co0.13O2 without any carbon modification are successfully synthesized by solvothermal and hydrothermal methods followed by a calcination process. The sample synthesized by the solvothermal method(S-NCM) possesses more homogenous microstructure, lower cation mixing degree and more oxygen vacancies on the surface, compared to the sample prepared by the hydrothermal method(H-NCM). The S-NCM sample exhibits much better cycling performance, higher discharge capacity and more excellent rate performance than H-NCM. At 0.2 C rate,the S-NCM sample delivers a much higher initial discharge capacity of 292.3 mAh g^-1 and the capacity maintains 235 m Ah g^-1 after 150 cycles(80.4% retention), whereas the corresponding capacity values are only 269.2 and 108.5 m Ah g^-1(40.3% retention) for the H-NCM sample. The S-NCM sample also shows the higher rate performance with discharge capacity of 118.3 mAh g^-1 even at a high rate of 10 C, superior to that(46.5 m Ah g^-1) of the H-NCM sample.
