INCREASING RETURNS TO SCALE,DYNAMICS OF INDUSTRIAL STRUCTURE AND SIZE DISTRIBUTION OF FIRMS显示文摘A multi-agent model is presented to discuss the market dynamics and the size distribution of firms. The model emphasizes the effects of increasing returns to scale and gives the description of the born and death of adaptive producers. The evolution of market structure and its behavior under the technological shocks are investigated. Its dynamical results are in good agreement with some empirical “stylized facts” of industrial evolution. With the diversity of demand and adaptive growth strategies of firms, the firm size in the generalized model obeys the power-law distribution. Three factors mainly determine the competitive dynamics and the skewed size distributions of firms: 1. Self-reinforcing mechanism; 2. Adaptive firm growing strategies; 3. Demand diversity or widespread heterogeneity in the technological capabilities of firms. | Ying FAN Menghui LI Zengru DI | 2006 | Journal of Systems Science and Systems Engineering2006,15,1: | 5
The Dynamics of Two-State Public Opinion Propagation On Signed Networks显示文摘The formation of public opinion on the network is a hot issue in the field of complex network research, and some classical dynamic models are used to solve this problem. The signed network is a particular form of the complex network, which can adequately describe the amicable and hostile relationships in complex real-world systems. However, the methods for studying the dynamic process of public opinion propagation on signed networks still require to be further discussed. In this paper, the authors pay attention to the influence of negative edges in order to design a two-state public opinion propagation mechanism suitable for signed networks. The authors first set the interaction rules between nodes and the transition rules of node states and then apply the model to synthetic and real-world signed networks. The simulation results show that there is a critical value of the negative edge ratio. When the negative edge ratio exceeds this critical value, the evolutionary result of public opinion will change from a consistent state to a split state. This conclusion is also consistent with the distribution result of opinions within communities in the signed network. Besides, the research on the network structural balance shows that the model makes the network evolve in a more balanced direction. | GAO Yue FAN Ying DI Zengru | 2021 | Journal of Systems Science & Complexity2021,34,1: | 2
Signed PageRank on Online Rating Systems显示文摘The ratings in many user-object online rating systems can reflect whether users like or dislike the objects, and in some online rating systems, users can directly choose whether to like an object. So these systems can be represented by signed bipartite networks, but the original unsigned node evaluation algorithm cannot be directly used on the signed networks. This paper proposes the Signed Page Rank algorithm for signed bipartite networks to evaluate the object and user nodes at the same time.Based on the global information, the nodes can be sorted by the Signed Page Rank values in descending order, and the result is SR Ranking. The authors analyze the characteristics of top and bottom nodes of the real networks and find out that for objects, the SR Ranking can provide a more reasonable ranking which combines the degree and rating of node, and the algorithm also can help us to identify users with specific rating patterns.By discussing the location of negative edges and the sensitivity of object SR Ranking to negative edges, the authors also explore that the negative edges play an important role in the algorithm and explain that why the bad reviews are more important in real networks. | GU Ke FAN Ying DI Zengru | 2022 | Journal of Systems Science & Complexity2022,35,1: | 2

Theoretical perspective on synthetic man-made life:Learning from the origin of life显示文摘Creating a man-made life in the laboratory is one of life science's most intriguing yet challenging problems.Advances in synthetic biology and related theories, particularly those related to the origin of life, have laid the groundwork for further exploration and understanding in this field of artificial life or man-made life. But there remains a wealth of quantitative mathematical models and tools that have yet to be applied to this area.In this paper,we review the two main approaches often employed in the field of man-made life:the top-down approach that reduces the complexity of extant and existing living systems and the bottom-up approach that integrates welldefined components,by introducing the theoretical basis, recent advances, and their limitations. We then argue for another possible approach,namely'bottom-up from the origin of life':Starting with the establishment of autocatalytic chemical reaction networks that employ physical boundaries as the initial compartments, then designing directed evolutionary systems, with the expectation that independent compartments will eventually emerge so that the system becomes free-living.This approach is actually analogous to the process of how life originated. With this paper,we aim to stimulate the interest of synthetic biologists and experimentalists to consider a more theoretical perspective, and to promote the communication between the origin of life community and the synthetic man-made life community. | Lu Peng Zecheng Zhang Xianyi Wang Weiyi Qiu Liqian Zhou Hui Xiao Chunxiuzi Liu Shaohua Tang Zhiwei Qin Jiakun Jiang Zengru Di Yu Liu | 2023 | Quantitative Biology2023,11,4: | 0
Identifying the Key Reference of a Scientific Publication显示文摘The most fundamental way to measure the impact of a scientific publication is using the number of citations it received.Though citation count and its variants are widely adopted, they have been pointed out to be poor proxies for a paper's quality because a citation might result from different reasons. It is thus crucial to quantify the true relevance of the cited papers to the citing paper. There are already some eforts in the literature devoted to addressing this isue, yet a well-accepted method is still lacking, possibly due to the absence of standard ground truth data for comparing different methods. In this paper,we propose a simple method using a local diffusion process on citation networks for identifying the key references for each scientific publication. The effectiveness and of the method are validated in a subset of the American Physical Society data in which the key references are mentioned in the abstract of papers. We further define an effective citation metric for quantifying the actual impact of each paper and its evolution. The effective citation metric additionally reveals the citation preference of research at journal and country levels. | Haochuan Cui An Zeng Ying Fan Zengru Di | 2020 | Journal of Systems Science and Systems Engineering2020,29,4: | 0

Orientation in Social Networks显示文摘Stanley Milgram's small world experiment presents 'six degrees of separation' of our world. One phenomenon of the experiment still puzzling us is that how individuals operating with the social network information with their characteristics can be very adept at finding the short chains. The previous works on this issue focus whether on the methods of navigation in a given network structure,or on the effects of additional information to the searching process. In this paper, the authors emphasize that the growth and shape of network architecture is tightly related to the individuals' attributes. The authors introduce a method to reconstruct nodes' intimacy degree based on local interaction. Then we provide an intimacy based approach for orientation in networks. The authors find that the basic reason of efficient search in social networks is that the degree of 'intimacy' of each pair of nodes decays with the length of their shortest path exponentially. Meanwhile, the model can explain the hubs limitation which was observed in real-world experiment. | HU Yanqing FAN Ying DI Zengru | 2017 | Journal of Systems Science & Complexity2017,30,1: | 0
