1The tomato HIGH PIGMENT1/DAMAGED DNA BINDING PROTEIN 1 gene contributes to regulation of fruit ripening显示文摘Fleshy fruit ripening is governed by multiple external and internal cues and accompanied by changes in color,texture,volatiles,and nutritional quality traits.While extended shelf-life and increased phytonutrients are desired,delaying ripening via genetic or postharvest means can be accompanied by reduced nutritional value.Here we report that the high pigment 1(hp1)mutation at the UV-DAMAGED DNA BINDING PROTEIN 1(DDB1)locus,previously shown to influence carotenoid and additional phytonutrient accumulation via altered light signal transduction,also results in delayed ripening and firmer texture,resulting at least in part from decreased ethylene evolution.Transcriptome analysis revealed multiple ethylene biosynthesis and signaling-associated genes downregulated in hp1.Furthermore,the hp1 mutation impedes softening of the pericarp,placenta,columella as well as the whole fruit,in addition to reduced expression of the FRUITFUL2(FUL2)MADS-box transcription factor and xyloglucan endotransglucosylase/hydrolase 5(XTH5).These results indicate that DDB1 influences a broader range of fruit development and ripening processes than previously thought and present an additional genetic target for increasing fruit quality and shelf-life.Anquan Wang Danyang Chen Qiyue Ma Jocelyn K.C.Rose Zhangjun Fei Yongsheng Liu James J.Giovannoni 2019Horticulture Research2019,6,1:3
2Tomato fruit as a model for tissue-specific gene silencing in crop plants显示文摘Use of CRISPR-Cas9(Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats(CRISPR)-CRISPR-associated 9)-mediated genome editing has proliferated for use in numerous plant species to modify gene function and expression,usually in the context of either transient or stably inherited genetic alternations.While extremely useful in many applications,modification of some loci yields outcomes detrimental to further experimental evaluation or viability of the target organism.Expression of Cas9 under a promoter conferring gene knockouts in a tissue-specific subset of genomes has been demonstrated in insect and animal models,and recently in Arabidopsis.We developed an in planta GFP(green fluorescent protein)assay system to demonstrate fruit-specific gene editing in tomato using a phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase 2 gene promoter.We then targeted a SET-domain containing polycomb protein,SlEZ2,previously shown to yield pleiotropic phenotypes when targeted via ^(35)S-driven RNA interference and we were able to characterize fruit phenotypes absent additional developmental perturbations.Tissue-specific gene editing will have applications in assessing function of essential genes otherwise difficult to study via germline modifications and will provide routes to edited genomes in tissues that could not otherwise be recovered when their germline modification perturbs their normal development.Ari Feder Sarah Jensen Anquan Wang Lance Courtney Lesley Middleton Joyce Van Eck Yongsheng Liu James J.Giovannoni 2020Horticulture Research2020,7,1:2

4Remote Sensing-based Spatiotemporal Distribution of Grassland Aboveground Biomass and Its Response to Climate Change in the Hindu Kush Himalayan Region显示文摘The grassland in the Hindu Kush Himalayan(HKH) region is one of the large st and most biodiverse mountain grassland types in the world,and its ecosystem service functions have profound impacts on the sustainable development of the HKH region.Monitoring the spatiotemporal distribution of grassland aboveground biomass(AGB) accurately and quantifying its response to climate change are indispensable sources of information for sustainably managing grassland ecosystems in the HKH region.In this study,a pure vegetation index model(PVIM) was applied to estimate the long-term dynamics of grassland AGB in the HKH region during 2000-2018.We further quantified the response of grassland AGB to climate change(temperature and precipitation) by partial correlation and variance partitioning analyses and then compared their differences with elevation.Our results demonstrated that the grassland AGB predicted by the PVIM had a good linear relationship with the ground sampling data.The grassland AGB distribution pattern showed a decreasing trend from east to west across the HKH region except in the southern Himalayas.From 2000 to 2018,the mean AGB of the HKH region increased at a rate of 1.57 g/(m~2·yr) and ranged from 252.9(2000) to 307.8 g/m~2(2018).AGB had a positive correlation with precipitation in more than 80% of the grassland,and temperature was positively correlated with AGB in approximately half of the region.The change in grassland AGB was more responsive to the cumulative effect of annual precipitation,while it was more sensitive to the change in temperature in the growing season;in addition,the influence of climate varied at different elevations.Moreover,compared with that of temperature,the contribution of precipitation to grassland AGB change was greater in approximately 60% of the grassland,but the differences in the contribution for each climate factor were small between the two temporal scales at elevations over 2000 m.An accurate assessment of the temporal and spatial distributions of grassland AGB and the quantification of its response to climate change are of great significance for grassland management and sustainable development in the HKH region.XU Cong LIU Wenjun ZHAO Dan HAO Yanbin XIA Anquan YAN Nana ZENG Yuan 2022Chinese Geographical Science2022,32,5:1
5Evenness is important in assessing progress towards sustainable development goals显示文摘Sustainable development goals(SDGs)emphasize a holistic achievement instead of cherry-picking a few.However,no assessment has quantitatively considered the evenness among all 17 goals.Here,we propose a systematic method,which first integrates both the evenness and the overall status of all goals,to distinguish the ideal development pathways from the uneven ones and then revisit the development trajectory in China from 2000 to 2015.Our results suggest that,despite the remarkable progress,a bottleneck has occurred in China since 2013 due to the stagnant developments in some SDGs.However,many far-reaching policies in China have been targeting these deficiencies since then,providing a perspective on how a country approaches sustainable development by promoting evenness among all SDGs.Our results also indicate that regions with the slowest progress are the developed provinces,owing to the persistent uneven status of all goals.Our study demonstrates the importance of adopting evenness in assessing and guiding sustainable development.Yali Liu Jianqing Du Yanfen Wang Xiaoyong Cui Jichang Dong Yanbin Hao Kai Xue Hongbo Duan Anquan Xia Yi Hu Zhi Dong Bingfang Wu Xinquan Zhao Bojie Fu 2021National Science Review2021,8,8:1

8Water resource conservation promotes synergy between economy and environment in China’s northern drylands显示文摘Water resource availability is the major limiting factor for sustainable development in drylands.Climate change intensifies the conflicting water demands between people and the environment and highlights the importance of effective water resource management for achieving a balance between economic development and environmental protection.In 2008,Inner Mongolia,typical dryland in northern China,proposed strict regulations on water exploitation and utilization aimed at achieving sustainable development.Our study is the first to investigate the effectiveness and performance of these long-standing water conservation regulations.Our analyses found that the regulations drove industrial transformation,evidenced by the decreasing proportion of environmentally harmful industries such as coal and steel,and the increasing proportion of tertiary industries(especially tourism).Following industrial transformation,economic development decoupled from industrial water consumption and subsequently led to reduced negative environmental impacts.Based on these results,adaptive strategies were developed for 12 cities by revealing and integrating their development pathways and relative status in achieving sustainable development.Integration and cooperation between cities were proposed,e.g.,a water trade agreement between eastern Inner Mongolia(an economically underdeveloped region with relatively abundant water resources)and central Inner Mongolia(an economically developed region with high water stress).Such an agreement may enable the holistic achievement of sustainable development across regions.By integrating the findings of our research,our study presents a reproducible framework for water-management-based sustainable development strategies in drylands.Yali Liu Jianqing Du Boyang Ding Yuexian Liu Wenjun Liu Anquan Xia Ran Huo Qinwei Ran Yanbin Hao Xiaoyong Cui Yanfen Wang 2022Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering2022,16,3:0
9Traffic Scene Captioning with Multi-Stage Feature Enhancement显示文摘Traffic scene captioning technology automatically generates one or more sentences to describe the content of traffic scenes by analyzing the content of the input traffic scene images,ensuring road safety while providing an important decision-making function for sustainable transportation.In order to provide a comprehensive and reasonable description of complex traffic scenes,a traffic scene semantic captioningmodel withmulti-stage feature enhancement is proposed in this paper.In general,the model follows an encoder-decoder structure.First,multilevel granularity visual features are used for feature enhancement during the encoding process,which enables the model to learn more detailed content in the traffic scene image.Second,the scene knowledge graph is applied to the decoding process,and the semantic features provided by the scene knowledge graph are used to enhance the features learned by the decoder again,so that themodel can learn the attributes of objects in the traffic scene and the relationships between objects to generate more reasonable captions.This paper reports extensive experiments on the challenging MS-COCO dataset,evaluated by five standard automatic evaluation metrics,and the results show that the proposed model has improved significantly in all metrics compared with the state-of-the-art methods,especially achieving a score of 129.0 on the CIDEr-D evaluation metric,which also indicates that the proposed model can effectively provide a more reasonable and comprehensive description of the traffic scene.Dehai Zhang Yu Ma Qing Liu Haoxing Wang Anquan Ren Jiashu Liang 2023Computers, Materials & Continua2023,76,9:0
