Different SNC mechanisms and possible techniques for SNC are discussed with emphasis on mechanically induced surface self-nanocrystallization.Further development and prospects are addressed with respect to the properties and behaviors of the materials with a nanocrystalline surface. | 4 | Serum positive cagA in patients with non-ulcer dyspepsia and peptic ulcer disease from two centers in different regions of Turkey显示文摘AIM: To investigate and compare frequencies of serum positive cagA in patients from two separate regions of Turkey who were grouped according to the presence of peptic ulcer disease or non-ulcer dyspepsia.METHODS: One hundred and eighty Helicobacter pyloripositive patients with peptic ulcer disease or non-ulcer dyspepsia were included in the study. One hundred and fourteen patients had non-ulcer dyspepsia and 66 had peptic ulcer disease (32 with gastric ulcers and/or erosions and 34with duodenal ulcers). Each patient was tested for serum antibody to H. pylori cagA protein by enzyme immunoassay.RESULTS: The total frequency of serum positive cagA in the study group was 97.2 %. The rates in the patients with peptic ulcers and in those with non-ulcer dyspepsia were 100% and 95.6%, respectively. These results were similar to those reported in Asian studies, but higher than those that have been noted in other studies from Turkey and Western countries.CONCLUSION: The high rates of serum positive cagA in these patients with peptic ulcer disease and non-ulcer dyspepsia were similar to results reported in Asia. | 8 | Recurrent carpal tunnel syndrome: Evaluation and treatment of the possible causes显示文摘AIM To investigate the causes of the recurrent carpal tunnel syndrome(CTS) and implemented surgical interventions.METHODS Four hundred and eighty-seven patients, who were diagnosed with CTS and underwent surgical intervention between October 2016 and September 2007, were evaluated in this retrospective study. The age, gender, physical evaluation findings, electrophysiological examination reports and implemented surgical treatment methods were analyzed.RESULTS Thirty-nine of the cases were operated due to recurrent CTS. Further examination of the patients with recurrent CTS revealed that ten cases had diabetic polyneuropathy, three cases had hypothyroidism, two cases had rheumatoid arthritis and one case had systemic amyloidosis. Postoperative electromyography confirmed the neuropathy was due to systemic diseases. The remaining 23 patients with recurrent CTS did not have any systemic disease and all of them had applied previously to another health center. CONCLUSION We concluded that the recurrence rates in CTS might be decreased with exploration and incision of the entire transverse ligament. | 9 | Lack of hepcidin expression attenuates steatosis and causesfibrosis in the liver显示文摘AIM: To investigate the role of key iron-regulatory protein, hepcidin in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD). METHODS: Hepcidin(Hamp1) knockout and floxed control mice were administered a high fat and high sucrose(HFS) or a regular control diet for 3 or 7 mo. Steatosis, triglycerides, fibrosis, protein and gene expression in mice livers were determined by histological and biochemical techniques, western blotting and realtime polymerase chain reaction. RESULTS: Knockout mice exhibited hepatic iron accumulation. Despite similar weight gains, HFS feeding induced hepatomegaly in floxed, but not knockout, mice. The livers of floxed mice exhibited higher levels of steatosis, triglycerides and c-Jun N-terminal kinase(JNK) phosphorylation than knockout mice. In contrast, a significant increase in fibrosis was observed in knockout mice livers within 3 mo of HFS administration. The hepatic gene expression levels of sterol regulatoryelement-binding protein-1c and fat-specific protein-27, but not peroxisome proliferator-activated receptoralpha or microsomal triglyceride transfer protein, were attenuated in HFS-fed knockout mice. Knockout mice fed with regular diet displayed increased carnitine palmitoyltransferase-1a and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase-1 but decreased glucose-6-phosphatase expression in the liver. In summary, attenuated steatosis correlated with decreased expression of lipogenic and lipid storage genes, and JNK phosphorylation. Deletion of Hamp1 alleles per se modulated hepatic expression of beta-oxidation and gluconeogenic genes. CONCLUSION: Lack of hepcidin expression inhibits hepatic lipid accumulation and induces early development of fibrosis following high fat intake. | 13 | Determination of penetration depth at high velocity impact using finite element method and artificial neural network tools显示文摘Determination of ballistic performance of an armor solution is a complicated task and evolved significantly with the application of finite element methods(FEM) in this research field.The traditional armor design studies performed with FEM requires sophisticated procedures and intensive computational effort,therefore simpler and accurate numerical approaches are always worthwhile to decrease armor development time.This study aims to apply a hybrid method using FEM simulation and artificial neural network(ANN) analysis to approximate ballistic limit thickness for armor steels.To achieve this objective,a predictive model based on the artificial neural networks is developed to determine ballistic resistance of high hardness armor steels against 7.62 mm armor piercing ammunition.In this methodology,the FEM simulations are used to create training cases for Multilayer Perceptron(MLP) three layer networks.In order to validate FE simulation methodology,ballistic shot tests on 20 mm thickness target were performed according to standard Stanag 4569.Afterwards,the successfully trained ANN(s) is used to predict the ballistic limit thickness of 500 HB high hardness steel armor.Results show that even with limited number of data,FEM-ANN approach can be used to predict ballistic penetration depth with adequate accuracy. | Nam?k KILI? | 16 | Novel role of STAT3 in microglia-dependent neuroinflammation after experimental subarachnoid haemorrhage显示文摘Background and purpose Signal transducer and activator of transcription 3(STAT3)may contribute to the proinflammation in the central nervous system diseases by modulating the microglial responses.Thus,this study was intended to investigate the effect of STAT3 on microglia-dependent neuroinflammation and functional outcome after experimental subarachnoid haemorrhage(SAH).Methods The SAH model was established by endovascular perforation in the mouse.Real-time PCR(RtPCR)and western blot were used to examine the dynamic STAT3 signalling pathway responses after SAH.To clarify the role of the STAT3 signalling pathway in the microglia-dependent neuroinflammation after SAH,the microglia-specific STAT3 knockout(KO)mice were generated by the Cre-LoxP system.The neurological functions were assessed by Catwalk and Morris water maze tests.Neuronal loss after SAH was determined by immunohistochemistry staining.Microglial polarisation status after STAT3 KO was then examined by RtPCR and immunofluorescence.Results The STAT3 and Janus kinase-signal transducer 2 activated immediately with the upregulation and phosphorylation after SAH.Downstream factors and related mediators altered dynamically and accordingly.Microglial STAT3 deletion ameliorated the neurological impairment and alleviated the early neuronal loss after SAH.To investigate the underlying mechanism,we examined the microglial reaction after STAT3 KO.STAT3 deletion reversed the increase of microglia after SAH.Loss of STAT3 triggered the early morphological changes of microglia and primed microglia from M1 to M2 polarisation.Functionally,microglial STAT3 deletion suppressed the SAH-induced proinflammation and promoted the anti-inflammation in the early phase.Conclusions STAT3 is closely related to the microglial polarisation transition and modulation of microglia-dependent neuroinflammation.Microglial STAT3 deletion improved neurological function and neuronal survival probably through promoting M2 polarisation and anti-inflammatory responses after SAH.STAT3 may serve as a promising therapeutic target to alleviate early brain injury after SAH. | Zhiyuan Vera Zheng Junfan Chen Hao Lyu Sin Yu Erica Lam Gang Lu Wai Yee Chan George K C Wong | 2022 | Stroke & Vascular Neurology2022,7,1: | 3 |
