| 5 | Promotion by 5-Aminolevulinic Acid of Germination of Pakchoi (Brassica campestris ssp. chinensis var. communis Tsen et Lee) Seeds Under Salt Stress显示文摘The seed germination and seedling growth of pakchoi (Brassica campestris ssp. chinensis var.communis Tsen et Lee cv. Hanxiao) were not significantly inhibited until the concentration of NaCl was increased to150 mmol/L. Treatment of pakchoi seeds with exogenous 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA), at concentrations ranging from 0.01 to 10.00 mg/L, promoted seed germination when seeds were stressed by salinity, whereas levulinic acid (LA), an inhibitor of ALA dehydrase, significantly inhibited seed germination and seedling growth, suggesting that metabolism of ALA into porphyrin compounds was necessary for seed germination and seedling growth. Determination of respiratory rate during seed germination showed that ALA increased seed respiration under both normal conditions and salt stress. Furthermore, salt stress decreased levels of endogenous ALA, as well as heme, in etiolated seedlings. | 7 | Effect of Oxymatrine on the TGFbeta-Smad signaling pathway in rats with CCl_4-induced hepatic fibrosis显示文摘AIM: To explore the anti-fibrotic effect of Oxymatrine on CCl4-induced liver fibrosis in rats and its modulation on the TGFbeta-Smad signaling pathway. METHODS: One hundred healthy male SD rats were randomly divided into three groups: normal group (n = 20), treatment group of Oxymatrine (n = 40) and CCl4-induced fibrosis group (n = 40). Experimental hepatic fibrosis was induced by subcutaneous injection of carbon tetrachloride (CCl4 soluted in liquid paraffin with the concentration of 300 g/L, the dosage of injection was 3 mL/kg, twice per week for 8 wk). The treated rats received Oxymatrine via celiac injection at a dosage of 10 mg/kg twice a week at the same time. The deposition of collagen was observed with H&E and Masson staining. The concentration of serum TGF-β1 was assayed with ELISA. The gene expression of Smads and CBP (CREB binding protein) was detected with in situ hybridization (ISH) and immunohistochemistry (IH), respectively. All the experimental figures were scanned and analyzed with special figure-analysis software. RESULTS: A significant reduction of collagen deposition and rearrangement of the parenchyma was noted in the liver tissue of Oxymatrine-treated rats. The semi- quantitative histological scores (2.43 ± 0.47 μm2 vs 3.76 ± 0.68 μm2, P < 0.05) and average area of collagen in those rats were significantly decreased when compared with hepatic cirrhosis model rats (94.41 ± 37.26 μm2 vs 290.86 ± 89.37 μm2, P < 0.05). The gene expression of Smad 3 mRNA was considerably decreased in the treated animals. The A value of Smad 3 mRNA was lower in the treated rats than the model rats (0.034 ± 0.090 vs 0.167 ± 0.092, P < 0.05). Contrarily, the A value of Smad 7 mRNA was increased considerably in the treated animals (0.175 ± 0.065 vs 0.074 ± 0.012, P < 0.05). There was an obvious decrease in the expression of CBP mRNA in treated rats as illuminated by a reduction of its A value when compared with model rats (0.065 ± 0.049 vs 0.235 ± 0.025, P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Oxymatrine is effective in reducing the production and deposition of collagen in the liver tissue of experimental rats. | 8 | A life support-based comprehensive treatment regimen dramatically lowers the in-hospital mortality of patients with fulminant myocarditis: a multiple center study显示文摘Fulminant myocarditis(FM) has unacceptable high mortality. This study aimed to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of a life support-based comprehensive treatment regimen(LSBCTR), a completely novel treatment regimen, for FM. A total of 169 FM patients recruited from January 2008 to December 2018 were divided into two groups: patients receiving LSBCTR(81 cases),which includes(i) mechanical life support(positive pressure respiration, intra-aortic balloon pump with or without extracorporeal membrane oxygenation),(ii) immunomodulation therapy using sufficient doses of glucocorticoids and immunoglobulins, and(iii) application of neuraminidase inhibitors, and those receiving conventional treatment(88 cases). The endpoints were in-hospital death and heart-transplantation. Of all the population, 44 patients(26.0%) died in hospitals. Inhospital mortality was 3.7%(3/81) for LSBCTR group and 46.6%(41/88) for traditional treatment(P<0.001). Early application of LSBCTR, mechanical life support, neuraminidase inhibitors, and immunomodulation therapy significantly contributed to reduction in in-hospital mortality. This study describes a novel treatment regimen for FM patients that dramatically reduces inhospital mortality. | 9 | Anisotropic coding metamaterials and their powerful manipulation of differently polarized terahertz waves显示文摘Metamaterials based on effective media can be used to produce a number of unusual physical properties(for example,negative refraction and invisibility cloaking)because they can be tailored with effective medium parameters that do not occur in nature.Recently,the use of coding metamaterials has been suggested for the control of electromagnetic waves through the design of coding sequences using digital elements‘0’and‘1,'which possess opposite phase responses.Here we propose the concept of an anisotropic coding metamaterial in which the coding behaviors in different directions are dependent on the polarization status of the electromagnetic waves.We experimentally demonstrate an ultrathin and flexible polarization-controlled anisotropic coding metasurface that functions in the terahertz regime using specially designed coding elements.By encoding the elements with elaborately designed coding sequences(both 1-bit and 2-bit sequences),the x-and y-polarized waves can be anomalously reflected or independently diffused in three dimensions.The simulated far-field scattering patterns and near-field distributions are presented to illustrate the dual-functional performance of the encoded metasurface,and the results are consistent with the measured results.We further demonstrate the ability of the anisotropic coding metasurfaces to generate a beam splitter and realize simultaneous anomalous reflections and polarization conversions,thus providing powerful control of differently polarized electromagnetic waves.The proposed method enables versatile beam behaviors under orthogonal polarizations using a single metasurface and has the potential for use in the development of interesting terahertz devices. | Shuo Liu Tie Jun Cui Quan Xu Di Bao Liangliang Du Xiang Wan Wen Xuan Tang Chunmei Ouyang Xiao Yang Zhou Hao Yuan Hui Feng Ma Wei Xiang Jiang Jiaguang Han Weili Zhang Qiang Cheng | 2016 | Light(Science & Applications)2016,5,1: | 36 |
| 10 | Berberine inhibits hepatic gluconeogenesis via the LKB1-AMPK-TORC2 signaling pathway in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats显示文摘AIM: To investigate the molecular mechanisms of berberine inhibition of hepatic gluconeogenesis in a diabetic rat model.METHODS: The 40 rats were randomly divided into five groups. One group was selected as the normal group. In the remaining groups(n = 8 each), the rats were fed on a high-fat diet for 1 mo and received intravenous injection of streptozotocin for induction of the diabetic models. Berberine(156 mg/kg per day)(berberine group) or metformin(184 mg/kg per day)(metformin group) was intragastrically administered to the diabetic rats and 5-aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide1-β-D-ribofuranoside(AICAR)(0.5 mg/kg per day)(AICAR group) was subcutaneously injected to the diabetic rats for 12 wk. The remaining eight diabetic rats served as the model group. Fasting plasma glucose and insulin levels as well as lipid profile were tested.The expressions of proteins were examined by western blotting. The nuclear translocation of CREB-regulated transcription co-activator(TORC)2 was observed by immunohistochemical staining. RESULTS: Berberine improved impaired glucose tolerance and decreased plasma hyperlipidemia. Moreover, berberine decreased fasting plasma insulin and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance(HOMA-IR). Berberine upregulated protein expression of liver kinase(LK)B1, AMP-activated protein kinase(AMPK) and phosphorylated AMPK(p-AMPK). The level of phophorylated TORC2(p-TORC2) protein in the cytoplasm was higher in the berberine group than in the model group, and no significant difference in total TORC2 protein level was observed. Immunohistochemical staining revealed that more TORC2 was localized in the cytoplasm of the berberine group than in the model group. Moreover, berberine treatment downregulated protein expression of the key gluconeogenic enzymes(phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase and glucose-6-phosphatase) in the liver tissues. | 12 | Using receiver operating characteristic curves to evaluate the diagnostic value of the combination of multislice spiral CT and alpha-fetoprotein levels for small hepatocellular carcinoma in cirrhotic patients显示文摘BACKGROUND: The various combination of multiphase enhancement multislice spiral CT(MSCT) makes the diagnosis of a small hepatocellular carcinoma(s HCC) on the background of liver cirrhosis possible. This study was to explore whether the combination of MSCT enhancement scan and alpha-fetoprotein(AFP) level could increase the diagnostic efficiency for s HCC.METHODS: This study included 35 s HCC patients and 52 cirrhotic patients without image evidence of HCC as a control group. The diagnoses were made by three radiologists employing a 5-point rating scale, with postoperative pathologic results as the gold standard. Receiver operating characteristic(ROC) curve analysis was performed to evaluate the diagnostic value of the three MSCT combination modes(arterial phase+portal-venous phase, arterial phase+delayed phase,arterial phase+portal-venous phase+delayed phase) and AFP levels for s HCC on the background of liver cirrhosis. RESULTS: The area under ROC curve(AUC), sensitivity,and specificity of the combination of arterial phase+portalvenous phase+delayed phase were 0.93, 93%, and 82%, respectively. The average AUC of the arterial phase+portalvenous phase+delayed phase combination was significantly greater than that of the arterial phase+portal-venous phase(AUC=0.84, P=0.01) and arterial phase+delayed phase(AUC=0.85, P=0.03). Arterial phase+portal-venous phase had a smaller AUC(0.84) than arterial phase+delayed phase(0.85), but the difference was insignificant(P=0.15). After combining MSCT enhancement scan with AFP, the AUC, sensitivity, and specificity were 0.95, 94%, and 83%, respectively, indicating a greatly increased diagnostic efficiency for s HCC.CONCLUSIONS: The combination of AFP and 3 phases MSCT enhancement scan could increase the diagnostic efficiency for s HCC on the background of liver cirrhosis. | 13 | Clinical research linking Traditional Chinese Medicine constitution types with diseases:a literature review of 1639 observational studies显示文摘OBJECTIVE:To analyze clinical studies on correlations between Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM)body constitution types and diseases published in the past 10 years,and to provide an evidence base to support the use of such correlations for health maintenance and disease prevention.METHODS:We searched five databases for the period April 2009 to December 2019:China National Knowledge Infrastructure Database,Wanfang Database,China Science and Technology Journal Database,PubMed and Embase.Three types of observational studies on correlation between constitution types and diseases were included:cross-sectional,case-control and cohort studies.Descriptive statistical methods were employed for data analysis.RESULTS:A total of 1639 clinical studies were identified:1452(88.59%)cross-sectional studies,115(7.02%)case-control studies and 72(4.39%)cohort studies covering 30 regions of China and five other countries(Malaysia,South Korea,Singapore,Thailand and France).The collection of studies comprised 19 disease categories and 333 different diseases.The 10 most commonly studied diseases were hypertension,diabetes,stroke,coronary atherosclerotic heart disease(CAHD),sleep disorders,neoplasm of the breast,dysmenorrhea,fatty liver disease,chronic viral hepatitis B and dyslipidemia.We found high distributions for each biased constitution type in different patient populations as follows:Qi-deficiency constitution in stroke,diabetes,chronic obstructive pulmonary disease,acquired immunodeficiency syndrome and hypertension;Yang-deficiency constitution in female infertility,osteoporosis,irritable bowel syndrome,gonarthrosis and dysmenorrhea;Yin-deficiency constitution in hypertension,diabetes,constipation,female climacteric states and osteoporosis;phlegm-dampness constitution in hypertension,stroke,fatty liver disease,diabetes and metabolic syndrome;damp-heat constitution in acne,chronic gastritis,chronic viral hepatitis B,human papillomavirus infection and hyperuricemia;blood-stasis constitution in CAHD,endometriosis and stroke;Qi-stagnation constitution in hyperplasia and neoplasms of the breast,insomnia,depression and thyroid nodules;and inherited-special constitution in asthma and allergic rhinitis.CONCLUSION:Eight biased TCM constitutions were closely related to specific diseases,and could be used to guide individualized prevention and treatment.More rigorously designed studies are recommended to further verify the constitution-disease relationship. | Liang Xue Wang Qi Jiang Zeqiang Li Zhuqing Zhang Mengxing Yang Peiying Wang Xin Wang Yanqiu Qin Yuehua Li Tianxing Zhang Tianyi Wang Yi Sun Jianxiang Li Yusi Luo Hui Li Lingru | 2020 | Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine2020,40,4: | 29 |
| 14 | Panax notoginseng saponins ameliorates experimental hepatic fibrosis and hepatic stellate cell proliferation by inhibiting the Jak2/Stat3 pathways显示文摘OBJECTIVE: To investigate the inhibitory effect of Panax notoginseng saponins(PNS) on liver fibrosis and explore the underlying mechanisms.METHODS: Carbon tetrachloride(CCl4)-treated rats and hepatic stellate cells(HSCs) were used. The effect of PNS on CCl4-induced liver fibrosis was studied with histochemical and biochemical analysis.Transforming growth factor(TGF)-β1, α-smooth muscle actin(α-SMA), and collagen Ι m RNA expression were determined by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR). Meanwhile, the protein expression levels of α-SMA, collagen Ι, phosphorylation-Janus activated kinase signal transducer(p-Jak2) / Jak2, and phosphorylation-activator of transcription(p-Stat)3 / Stat3 were determined by immunohistochemistry and / or immunoblotting.RESULTS: PNS treatment significantly improved the liver function of rats as indicated by decreased serum enzymatic activities of alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase. Histopathological results indicated that PNS alleviated liver damage and reduced the formation of fibrous septa. | 15 | Clinical effects and complications of TIPS for portal hypertension due to cirrhosis:A single center显示文摘AIM:To determine the clinical effects and complications of transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt(TIPS)for portal hypertension due to cirrhosis.METHODS:Two hundred and eighty patients with portal hypertension due to cirrhosis who underwent TIPS were retrospectively evaluated.Portal trunk pressure was measured before and after surgery.The changes in hemodynamics and the condition of the stent were assessed by ultrasound and the esophageal and fundic veins observed endoscopically.RESULTS:The success rate of TIPS was 99.3%.The portal trunk pressure was 26.8±3.6 cmH2O after surgery and 46.5±3.4 cmH2O before surgery(P<0.01).The velocity of blood flow in the portal vein increased.The internal diameters of the portal and splenic veins were reduced.The short-term hemostasis rate was100%.Esophageal varices disappeared completely in68%of patients and were obviously reduced in 32%.Varices of the stomach fundus disappeared completely in 80%and were obviously reduced in 20%of patients.Ascites disappeared in 62%,were markedly reduced in 24%,but were still apparent in 14%of patients.The total effective rate of ascites reduction was 86%.Hydrothorax completely disappeared in 100%of patients.The incidence of post-operative stent stenosis was 24%at 12 mo and 34%at 24 mo.The incidence of post-operative hepatic encephalopathy was 12%at3 mo,17%at 6 mo and 19%at 12 mo.The incidence of post-operative recurrent hemorrhage was 9%at 12mo,19%at 24 mo and 35%at 36 mo.The cumulative survival rate was 86%at 12 mo,81%at 24 mo,75%at 36 mo,57%at 48 mo and 45%at 60 mo.CONCLUSION:TIPS can effectively lower portal hypertension due to cirrhosis.It is significantly effective for hemorrhage of the digestive tract due to rupture of esophageal and fundic veins and for ascites and hydrothorax caused by portal hypertension. | Jian-Ping Qin Ming-De Jiang Wen Tang Xiao-Ling Wu Xin Yao Wei-Zheng Zeng Hui Xu Qian-Wen He Ming Gu | 2013 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2013,19,44: | 25 |

METHODS:This study was conducted at the West China Hospital.Subjects who received a physical examination at this hospital between January and December 2007 were included.Body mass index,blood pressure,fasting plasma glucose,serum lipid and lipoproteins concentrations were analyzed.Gallstone disease was diagnosed by ultrasound or on the basis of a history of cholecystectomy because of gallstone disease.Unconditional logistic regression analysis was used to investigate the risk factors for gallstone disease,and the Chi-square test was used to analyze differences in the incidence of metabolic disorders between subjects with and without gallstone disease. RESULTS:A total of 3573 people were included, 10.7%(384/3573)of whom had gallstone diseases.
