A Novel Semiconductor CIGS Photovoltaic Material and Thin-Film ED Technology显示文摘In order to achieve low cost high efficiency thin film solar cells,a novel Semiconductor Photovoltaic (PV) active material CuIn 1-x Ga x Se 2 (CIGS) and thin film Electro Deposition (ED) technology is explored.Firstly, the PV materials and technologies is investigated, then the detailed experimental processes of CIGS/Mo/glass structure by using the novel ED technology and the results are reported. These results shows that high quality CIGS polycrystalline thin films can be obtained by the ED method,in which the polycrystalline CIGS is definitely identified by the (112),(204,220) characteristic peaks of the tetragonal structure, the continuous CIGS thin film layers with particle average size of about 2μm of length and around 1 6μm of thickness. The thickness and solar grade quality of CIGS thin films can be produced with good repeatability.Discussion and analysis on the ED technique,CIGS energy band and sodium (Na) impurity properties, were also performed. The alloy CIGS exhibits not only increasing band gap with increasing x ,but also a change in material properties that is relevant to the device operation. The beneficial impurity Na originating from the low cost soda lime glass substrate becomes one prerequisite for high quality CIGS films. These novel material and technology are very useful for low cost high efficiency thin film solar cells and other devices. | ZHENG Guang fu 1,YANG Hong xing 1,MAN Cheuk ho 1,WONG Wing lok 2, AN Da wei 1 and John BURNETT 1(1 Centre for Development of Solar Energy Technology,Department of Building Services Engineering, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University,Hong Kong,C | 2001 | Journal of Semiconductors2001,22,11: | 10
Cell cycle-related kinase reprograms the liver immune microenvironment to promote cancer metastasis显示文摘The liver is an immunologically tolerant organ and a common metastatic site of multiple cancer types.Although a role for cancer cell invasion programs has been well characterized, whether and how liver-intrinsic factors drive metastatic spread is incompletely understood. Here,we show that aberrantly activated hepatocyte-intrinsic cell cycle-related kinase(CCRK)signaling in chronic liver diseases is critical for cancer metastasis by reprogramming an immunosuppressive microenvironment.Using an inducible liverspecific transgenic model,we found that CCRK overexpression dramatically increased both B16F10 melanoma and MC38 colorectal cancer(CRC)metastasis to the liver, which was highly infiltrated by polymorphonuclear-myeloid-derived suppressor cells(PMNMDSCs)and lacking natural killer T(NKT)cells.Depletion of PMN-MDSCs in CCRK transgenic mice restored NKT cell levels and their interferon gamma production and reduced liver metastasis to 2.7% and 0.7%(metastatic tumor weights)in the melanoma and CRC models, respectively.Mechanistically,CCRK activated nuclear factor-kappa B(NF-κB)signaling to increase the PMN-MDSC trafficking chemokine C-X-C motif ligand 1(CXCL1),which was positively correlated with liver-infiltrating PMN-MDSC levels in CCRK transgenic mice.Accordingly,CRC liver metastasis patients exhibited hyperaaivation of hepatic CCRK/NF-κB/CXCL1 signaling, which was associated with accumulation of PMN-MDSCs and paucity of NKT cells compared to healthy liver transplantation donors. In summary, this study demonstrates that immunosuppressive reprogramming by hepatic CCRK signaling undermines antimetastatic immunosurveillance. Our findings offer new mechanistic insights and therapeutic targets for liver metastasis intervention. | Xuezhen Zeng Jingying Zhou Zhewen Xiong Hanyong Sun Weiqin Yang Myth T.S.Mok Jing Wang Jingqing Li Man Liu Wenshu Tang Yu Feng Hector Kwong-Sang W ang Shun-Wa Tsang King-Lau Chow Philip Chun Yeung John Wong Paul Bo-San Lai Anthony Wing-Hung Chan Ka Fai To Stephen Lam Chan Qiang Xia Jing Xue Xiao Chen Jun Yu Sui Peng Joseph Jao-Yiu Sung Ming Kuang Alfred Sze-Lok Cheng | 2021 | Cellular & Molecular Immunology2021,18,4: | 5
Non-genetic photoacoustic stimulation of single neurons by a tapered fiber optoacoustic emitter显示文摘Neuromodulation at high spatial resolution poses great significance in advancing fundamental knowledge in the field of neuroscience and offering novel clinical treatments. Here,we developed a tapered fiber optoacoustic emitter(TFOE)generating an ultrasound field with a high spatial precision of 39.6 pm,enabling optoacoustic activation of single neurons or subcellular structures, such as axons and dendrites.Temporally,a single acoustic pulse of sub-microsecond converted by the TFOE from a single laser pulse of 3 ns is shown as the shortest acoustic stimuli so far for successful neuron activation. The precise ultrasound generated by the TFOE enabled the integration of the optoacoustic stimulation with highly stable patch-clamp recording on single neurons.Direct measurements of the electrical response of single neurons to acoustic stimulation, which is difficult for conventional ultrasound stimulation, have been demonstrated.By coupling TFOE with ex vivo brain slice electrophysiology,we unveil cell-type-specific responses of excitatory and inhibitory neurons to acoustic stimulation. These results demonstrate that TFOE is a non-genetic single-cell and sub-cellular modulation technology, which could shed new insights into the mechanism of ultrasound neurostimulation. | Linli Shi Ying Jiang Fernando R.Fernandez Guo Chen Lu Lan Heng-Ye Man John A.White Ji-Xin Cheng Chen Yang | 2021 | Light(Science & Applications)2021,10,8: | 4
Aberrant cholesterol metabolic signaling impairs antitumor immunosurveillance through natural killer T cell dysfunction in obese liver显示文摘Obesity is a major risk factor for cancers including hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)that develops from a background of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD).Hypercholesterolemia is a common comorbidity of obesity.Although cholesterol biosynthesis mainly occurs in the liver, its role in HCC development of obese people remains obscure.Using high-fat high-carbohydrate diet-associated orthotopic and spontaneous NAFLD-HCC mouse models,we found that hepatic cholesterol accumulation in obesity selectively suppressed natural killer T(NKT)cell-mediated antitumor immunosurveillance.Transcriptome analysis of human liver revealed aberrant cholesterol metabolism and NKT cell dysfunction in NAFLD patients.Notably,cholesterol-lowering rosuvastatin restored NKT expansion and cytotoxicity to prevent obesogenic diet-promoted HCC development. Moreover, suppression of hepatic cholesterol biosynthesis by a mammalian target of rapamycin(mTOR)inhibitor vistusertib preceded tumor regression, which was abolished by NKT inactivation but not CD8^(+)T cell depletion.Mechanistically, sterol regulatory element-binding protein 2(SREBP2)-driven excessive cholesterol production from hepatocytes induced lipid peroxide accumulation and deficient cytotoxicity in NKT cells, which were supported by findings in people with obesity,NAFLD and NAFLD-HCC.This study highlights mTORC1/SREBP2/cholesterol-mediated NKT dysfunction in the tumor-promoting NAFLD liver microenvironment, providing intervention strategies that invigorating NKT cells to control HCC in the obesity epidemic. | Wenshu Tang Jingying Zhou Weiqin Yang Yu Feng Haoran Wu Myth T.S.Mok Lingyun Zhang Zhixian Liang Xiaoyu Liu Zhewen Xiong Xuezhen Zeng Jing Wang Jiahuan Lu Jingqing Li Hanyong Sun Xiaoyu Tian Philip Chun Yeung Yong Hou Heung Man Lee Candice C.H.Lam Howard H.W.Leung Anthony W.H.Chan Ka Fai To John Wong Paul B.S.Lai Kelvin K.C.Ng Simon K.H.Wong Vincent W.S.Wong Alice P.S.Kong Joseph J.Y.Sung Alfred S.L.Cheng | 2022 | Cellular & Molecular Immunology2022,19,7: | 3

Formulation development and characterization of cellulose acetate nitrate based propellants for improved insensitive munitions properties显示文摘Cellulose acetate nitrate(CAN) was used as an insensitive energetic binder to improve the insensitive munitions(IM) properties of gun propellants to replace the M1 propellant used in 105 mm artillery charges.CAN contains the energetic nitro groups found in nitrocellulose(NC),but also acetyl functionalities, which lowered the polymer's sensitivity to heat and shock, and therefore improved its IM properties relative to NC.The formulation, development and small-scale characterization testing of several CAN-based propellants were done. The formulations, using insensitive energetic solid fillers and high-nitrogen modifiers in place of nitramine were completed. The small scale characterization testing, such as closed bomb testing, small scale sensitivity, thermal stability, and chemical compatibility were done. The mechanical response of the propellants under high-rate uni-axial compression at,hot, cold, and ambient temperatures were also completed.Critical diameter testing, hot fragment conductive ignition(HFCI) tests were done to evaluate the propellants' responses to thermal and shock stimuli.Utilizing the propellant chemical composition, theoretical predictions of erosivity were completed. All the small scale test results were utilized to down-select the promising CAN based formulations for large scale demonstration testing such as the ballistic performance and fragment impact testing in the105 mm M67 artillery charge configurations. The test results completed in the small and large scale testing are discussed. | Thelma MANNING Jeffrey WYCKOFF Carlton ADAM Eugene ROZUMOV Kenneth KLINGAMAN Viral PANCHAL Joseph LAQUIDARA Mike FAIR John BOLOGNINI Keith LUHMANN Steve VELARDE Christine KNOTT Stephanie M.PIRAINO Kevin BOYD | 2014 | Defence Technology(防务技术)2014,10,2: | 2

Enhanced propellant performance via environmentally friendly curable surface coating显示文摘Surface coating of granular propellants is widely used in a multiplicity of propellants for small, medium and large caliber ammunition. All small caliber ball propellants exhibit burning progressivity due to application of effective deterrent coatings. Large perforated propellant grains have also begun utilizing plasticizing and impregnated deterrent coatings with the purpose of increasing charge weights for greater energy and velocity for the projectile. The deterrent coating and impregnation process utilizes volatile organic compounds(VOCs) and hazardous air pollutants(HAPs) which results in propellants that need to be forced air dried which impacts air quality. Propellants undergo temperature fluctuations during their life. Diffusion coefficients vary exponentially with variations in temperature. A small temperature increase can induce a faster migration, even over a short period of time, which can lead to large deviations in the concentration. This large concentration change in the ammunition becomes a safety or performance liability. The presence of both polymeric deterrents and nitroglycerin(NG) in the nitrocellulose matrix and organic solvents leads to higher diffusion rates. This results in continued emissions of VOCs and HAPs. Conventional polymers tend to partition within the propellant matrix. In other words, localized mixing can occur between the polymer and underlying propellant. This is due to solvent induced softening of the polymer vehicle over the propellant grain. In effect this creates a path where migration can occur. Since nitrate esters, like NG, are relatively small, it can exude to the surface and create a highly unstable and dangerous situation for the warfighter. Curable polymers do not suffer from this partitioning due to 'melting' because no VOC solvents are present. They remain surface coated. The small scale characterization testing, such as closed bomb testing, small scale sensitivity, thermal stability, and chemical compatibility, will be presented. The 30 mm gun demonstration firing data at hot, cold, and ambient temperatures will also be presented. | Thelma Manning Jeffrey Wyckoff Kenneth Klingaman Viral Panchal Eugene Rozumov John Bolognini Ming Wang Young Subhash Patel | 2017 | Defence Technology(防务技术)2017,13,3: | 2

Innovative boron nitride-doped propellants显示文摘The U.S. military has a need for more powerful propellants with balanced/stoichiometric amounts of fuel and oxidants. However, balanced and more powerful propellants lead to accelerated gun barrel erosion and markedly shortened useful barrel life. Boron nitride(BN) is an interesting potential additive for propellants that could reduce gun wear effects in advanced propellants(US patent pending 2015-026P). Hexagonal boron nitride is a good lubricant that can provide wear resistance and lower flame temperatures for gun barrels. Further, boron can dope steel, which drastically improves its strength and wear resistance, and can block the formation of softer carbides. A scalable synthesis method for producing boron nitride nano-particles that can be readily dispersed into propellants has been developed. Even dispersion of the nano-particles in a double-base propellant has been demonstrated using a solvent-based processing approach. Stability of a composite propellant with the BN additive was verified. In this paper, results from propellant testing of boron nitride nano-composite propellants are presented, including closed bomb and wear and erosion testing. Detailed characterization of the erosion tester substrates before and after firing was obtained by electron microscopy, inductively coupled plasma and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. This promising boron nitride additive shows the ability to improve gun wear and erosion resistance without any destabilizing effects to the propellant. Potential applications could include less erosive propellants in propellant ammunition for large, medium and small diameter fire arms. | Thelma MANNING Richard FIELD Kenneth KLINGAMAN Michael FAIR John BOLOGNINI Robin CROWNOVER Carlton P.ADAM Viral PANCHAL Eugene ROZUMOV Henry GRAU Paul MATTER Michael BEACHY Christopher HOLT Samuel SOPOK | 2016 | Defence Technology(防务技术)2016,12,2: | 1
