| 10 | Predicting plant-soil N cycling and soil N_(2)O emissions in a Chinese old-growth temperate forest under global changes:uncertainty and implications显示文摘Soil-emitted N_(2)O contributes to two-thirds of global N_(2)O emissions,and is sensitive to global change.We used DayCent model to simulate major plant-soil N cycling processes under different global change scenarios in a typical temperate mixed forest in north-eastern China.Simulated scenarios included warming(T),elevated atmospheric CO_(2) concentration([CO_(2)])(C),increased N deposition(N)and precipitation(P),and their full factorial combinations.The responses of plant-soil nitrogen cycling processes including net N mineralization,plant N uptake,gross nitrification,denitrification and soil N_(2)O emission were examined.Concurrent increase of elevated[CO_(2)]and N deposition displayed most strong interactive effects on most fluxes.Using the results from experimental studies for evaluation,simulation uncertainty was highest under elevated[CO_(2)]and increased precipitation among the four global change factors.N deposition had a fundamental impact on soil N cycle and N_(2)O emission in our studied forest.Despite forest soil acting as a N sink for added N,scenarios which included increased N deposition showed higher cumulative soil N_(2)O emissions(summed up from 2001 to 2100).In particular,the scenario which included T,P,and N had the largest cumulative soil N_(2)O emission,which was a 24.4% increase over that under ambient conditions.Our study points to the importance of the interactive effects of global change factors on plant-soil N cycling and the necessity of multi-factor manipulation experiments. | Weiwei Dai Edith Bai Wei Li Ping Jiang Guanhua Dai Xingbo Zheng | 2020 | Soil Ecology Letters2020,2,1: | 1 |

In the present study, we aimed to assess the effects of HSD17B8 on growth and meat quality traits in cattle. Transcription profile analysis showed that HSD17B8 was primarily expressed in the salpinx, liver, and testis.Meanwhile, we identified three SNPs(SNP1: intron1-A91G; SNP2: exon 1-A90G; and SNP3: intron 8-A86G)of the bovine HSD17B8 gene and investigated its haplotype frequencies and linkage disequilibrium. The detected SNPs were found associated with growth traits(body weight,body length, height at withers, heart girth, hip width, and average daily gain) in native cattle populations(Nanyangand Jiaxian) as well as the meat quality traits(Warner–Bratzler shear force, rib area, dressing percentage, carcass weight, and backfat thickness) in commercial breeds(Angus, Hereford, Limousin, Luxi, Simmental, and Jinnan).Our results provided evidence that polymorphisms in the HSD17B8 gene were associated with growth traits and meat quality traits. | 18 | Engineered human spinal cord-like tissues with dorsal and ventral neuronal progenitors for spinal cord injury repair in rats and monkeys显示文摘Transplanting human neural progenitor cells is a promising method of replenishing the lost neurons after spinal cord injury (SCI), but differentiating neural progenitor cells into the diverse types of mature functional spinal cord neurons in vivo is challenging. In this study, engineered human embryonic spinal cord-like tissues with dorsal and ventral neuronal characters (DV-SC) were generated by inducing human neural progenitor cells (hscNPCs) to differentiate into various types of dorsal and ventral neuronal cells on collagen scaffold in vitro. Transplantation of DV-SC into complete SCI models in rats and monkeys showed better therapeutic effects than undifferentiated hscNPCs, including pronounced cell survival and maturation. DV-SC formed a targeted connection with the host’s ascending and descending axons, partially restored interrupted neural circuits, and improved motor evoked potentials and the hindlimb function of animals with SCI. | 19 | Geophysical Evidence for Carbonate Platform Periphery Gravity Flows in the Xisha Islands,South China Sea显示文摘High-resolution bathymetric and partial seismic data were utilized to determine the characteristics and distribution of mass-transport deposits(MTDs)in the Xisha area,North of the South China Sea.Many isolated carbonate platforms are found in this area,providing mass-wasting materials as a sediment source for MTDs.The MTDs in the study area were divided into three types(slide,slump,and debris flow)based on their rheological properties.The MTDs were mostly distributed at the toe of the carbonate platform slope,where a large amount of carbonate debris accumulated.A total of 32 MTDs were identified on the carbonate platform slopes.A systematic assessment of the MTD morphometric parameters showed that their total area covered 2225.2 km2,with the largest MTD covering 354.1 km2.These MTDs differ largely from the MTDs of other areas,especially in terms of sediment compositions and deposit processes.Gullies and channels on the slope and reefs on the top of the platform act as sediment conduits and carbonate-producing sources,respectively,playing vital roles in the distribution and generation of gravity flow deposits.The development model proposed in this work states that reefs disintegrate into carbonate debris and mix with seawater to form gravity flows,which scour the seafloor and accumulate at the downslope,eventually resulting in failure.Sediments from these failures turn into gravity flows,flowing into submarine canyons and channels.The results of this research further our understanding of the development pattern of MTDs in a carbonate setting. | BAI Hongxin SUN Yue WANG Dawei WANG Weiwei WU Shiguo | 2022 | Journal of Ocean University of China2022,21,4: | 0 |
