| 1 | Future Physics Programme of BESⅢ显示文摘There has recently been a dramatic renewal of interest in hadron spectroscopy and charm physics. This renaissance has been driven in part by the discovery of a plethora of charmonium-like XYZ states at BESⅢ and B factories, and the observation of an intriguing proton-antiproton threshold enhancement and the possibly related X(1835) meson state at BESⅢ, as well as the threshold measurements of charm mesons and charm baryons. We present a detailed survey of the important topics in tau-charm physics and hadron physics that can be further explored at BESⅢ during the remaining operation period of BEPCⅡ. | 6 | Ultrasonically activated scalpel versus monopolar electrocautery shovel in laparoscopic total mesorectal excision for rectal cancer显示文摘AIM: To investigate the feasibility and safety of monopolar electrocautery shovel (ES) in laparoscopic total mesorectal excision (TME) with anal sphincter preservation for rectal cancer in order to reduce the cost of the laparoscopic operation, and to compare ES with the ultrasonically activated scalpel (US). METHODS: Forty patients with rectal cancer, who underwent laparoscopic TME with anal sphincter preservation from June 2005 to June 2007, were randomly divided into ultrasonic scalpel group and monopolar ES group, prospectively. White blood cells (WBC) were measured before and after operation, operative time, blood loss, pelvic volume of drainage, time of anal exhaust, visual analogue scales (VAS) and surgery-related complications were recorded. RESULTS: All the operations were successful; no one was converted to open procedure. No significant differences were observed in terms of preoperative and postoperative d 1 and d 3 WBC counts (P = 0.493, P = 0.375, P = 0.559), operation time (P = 0.235), blood loss (P = 0.296), anal exhaust time (P = 0.431), pelvicdrainage volume and VAS in postoperative d 1 (P = 0.431, P = 0.426) and d 3 (P = 0.844, P = 0.617) between ES group and US group. The occurrence of surgery-related complications such as anastomotic leakage and wound infection was the same in the two groups. CONCLUSION: ES is a safe and feasible tool as same as US used in laparoscopic TME with anal sphincter preservation for rectal cancer on the basis of the skillful laparoscopic technique and the complete understanding of laparoscopic pelvic anatomy. | 10 | Sorafenib inhibits growth and metastasis of hepatocellular carcinoma by blocking STAT3显示文摘AIM: To investigate the inhibitory role and the underlying mechanisms of sorafenib on signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) activity in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).METHODS: Human and rat HCC cell lines were treated with sorafenib. Proliferation and STAT3 dephosphorylation were assessed. Potential molecular mechanisms of STAT3 pathway inhibition by sorafenib were evaluated. In vivo antitumor action and STAT3 inhibition were investigated in an immunocompetent orthotopic rat HCC model.RESULTS: Sorafenib decreased STAT3 phosphorylationat the tyrosine and serine residues (Y705 and S727), but did not affect Janus kinase 2 (JAK2) and phosphatase shatterproof 2 (SHP2), which is associated with growth inhibition in HCC cells. Dephosphorylation of S727 was associated with attenuated extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) phosphorylation, similar to the effects of a mitogen-activated protein kinase (MEK) inhibitor U0126, suggesting that sorafenib induced S727 dephosphorylation by inhibiting MEK/ERK signaling. Meanwhile, sorafenib could also inhibit Akt phosphorylation, and both the phosphatidylinositol-3-kinase (PI3K) inhibitor LY294002 and Akt knockdown resulted in Y705 dephosphorylation, indicating that Y705 dephosphorylation by sorafenib was mediated by inhibiting the PI3K/Akt pathway. | 15 | Surveillance-response systems: the key to elimination of tropical diseases显示文摘Tropical diseases remain a major cause of morbidity and mortality in developing countries.Although combined health efforts brought about significant improvements over the past 20 years,communities in resource-constrained settings lack the means of strengthening their environment in directions that would provide less favourable conditions for pathogens.Still,the impact of infectious diseases is declining worldwide along with progress made regarding responses to basic health problems and improving health services delivery to the most vulnerable populations.The London Declaration on Neglected Tropical Diseases(NTDs),initiated by the World Health Organization’s NTD roadmap,set out the path towards control and eventual elimination of several tropical diseases by 2020,providing an impetus for local and regional disease elimination programmes.Tropical diseases are often patchy and erratic,and there are differing priorities in resources-limited and endemic countries at various levels of their public health systems.In order to identify and prioritize strategic research on elimination of tropical diseases,the‘First Forum on Surveillance-Response System Leading to Tropical Diseases Elimination’was convened in Shanghai in June 2012.Current strategies and the NTD roadmap were reviewed,followed by discussions on how to identify and critically examine prevailing challenges and opportunities,including inter-sectoral collaboration and approaches for elimination of several infectious,tropical diseases.A priority research agenda within a‘One Health-One World’frame of global health was developed,including(i)the establishment of a platform for resource-sharing and effective surveillance-response systems for Asia Pacific and Africa with an initial focus on elimination of lymphatic filariasis,malaria and schistosomiasis;(ii)development of new strategies,tools and approaches,such as improved diagnostics and antimalarial therapies;(iii)rigorous validation of surveillance-response systems;and(iv)designing pilot studies to transfer Chinese experiences of successful surveillance-response systems to endemic countries with limited resources. | Ernest Tambo Lin Ai Xia Zhou Jun-Hu Chen Wei Hu Robert Bergquist Jia-Gang Guo Jürg Utzinger Marcel Tanner Xiao-Nong Zhou | 2014 | Infectious Diseases of Poverty2014,3,1: | 14 |

| 19 | Electroacupuncture alleviates stress-induced visceral hypersensitivity through an opioid system in rats显示文摘AIM:To investigate whether stress-induced visceral hypersensitivity could be alleviated by electroacupuncture(EA) and whether EA effect was mediated by endogenous opiates.METHODS:Six to nine week-old male SpragueDawley rats were used in this study.Visceral hypersensitivity was induced by a 9-d heterotypic intermittent stress(HIS) protocol composed of 3 randomly stressors,which included cold restraint stress at 4?℃ for 45 min,water avoidance stress for 60 min,and forced swimming stress for 20 min,in adult male rats.The extent of visceral hypersensitivity was quantified by electromyography or by abdominal withdrawal reflex(AWR) scores of colorectal distension at different distention pressures(20 mmHg,40 mmHg,60 mmHg and 80 mmHg).AWR scores either 0,1,2,3 or 4 were obtained by a blinded observer.EA or sham EA was performed at classical acupoint ST-36(Zu-San-Li) or BL-43(Gao-Huang) in both hindlimbs of rats for 30 min.Naloxone(NLX) or NLX methiodide(m-NLX) was administered intraperitoneally to HIS rats in some experiments.RESULTS:HIS rats displayed an increased sensitivity to colorectal distention,which started from 6 h(the first measurement),maintained for 24 h,and AWR scores returned to basal levels at 48 h and 7 d after HIS compared to pre-HIS baseline at different distention pressures.The AWR scores before HIS were 0.6 ± 0.2,1.3 ± 0.2,1.9 ± 0.2 and 2.3 ± 0.2 for 20 mmHg,40 mmHg,60 mmHg and 80 mmHg distention pressures,respectively.Six hours after termination of the last stressor,the AWR scores were 2.0 ± 0.1,2.5 ± 0.1,2.8 ± 0.2 and 3.5 ± 0.2 for 20 mmHg,40 mmHg,60 mmHg and 80 mmHg distention pressures,respectively.EA given at classical acupoint ST-36 in both hindlimbs for 30 min significantly attenuated the hypersensitive responses to colorectal distention in HIS rats compared with sham EA treatment [AWRs at 20 mmHg:2.0 ± 0.2 vs 0.7 ± 0.1,P = 4.23 711 E-4;AWRs at 40 mmHg:2.6 ± 0.2 vs 1.5 ± 0.2,P = 0.00 163;AWRs at 60 mmHg:3.1 ± 0.2 vs 1.9 ± 0.1,P = 0.003;AWRs at 80 mmHg:3.6 ± 0.1 vs 2.4 ± 0.2,P = 0.0023;electromyographic(EMG) at 20 mmHg:24 ± 4.7 vs 13.8 ± 3.5;EMG at 40 mmHg:60.2 ± 6.6 vs 30 ± 4.9,P = 0.00 523;EMG at 60 mmHg:83 ± 10 vs 39.8 ± 5.9,P = 0.00 029;EMG at 80 mmHg:94.3 ± 10.8 vs 49.6 ± 5.9,P = 0.00 021].In addition,EA at the acupuncture point BL-43 with same parameters did not alleviate visceral hypersensitivity in HIS rats.EA in healthy rats also did not have any effect on AWR scores to colorectal distention at distention pressuresof 20 and 40 mmHg.The EA-mediated analgesic effect was blocked by pretreatment with NLX in HIS rats [AWR scores pretreated with NLX vs normal saline(NS) were 2.0 vs 0.70 ± 0.20,2.80 ± 0.12 vs 1.50 ± 0.27,3 vs 2.00 ± 0.15 and 3.60 ± 0.18 vs 2.60 ± 0.18 for 20 mmHg,40 mmHg,60 mmHg and 80 mmHg;P = 0.0087,0.0104,0.0117 and 0.0188 for 20,40,60 and 80 mmHg,respectively].Furthermore,EA-mediated analgesic effect was completely reversed by administration of m-NLX,a peripherally restricted opioid antagonist(EMG pretreated with m-NLX vs NS were 30.84 ± 4.39 vs 13.33 ± 3.88,74.16 ± 9.04 vs 36.28 ± 8.01,96.45 ± 11.80 vs 50.19 ± 8.28,and 111.59 ± 13.79 vs 56.42 ± 8.43 for 20 mmHg,40 mmHg,60 mmHg and 80 mmHg;P = 0.05 026,0.00 034,0.00 005,0.000 007 for 20 mmHg,40 mmHg,60 mmHg and 80 mmHg,respectively).CONCLUSION:EA given at classical acupoint ST-36 alleviates stress-induced visceral pain,which is most likely mediated by opioid pathways in the periphery. | Yuan-Yuan Zhou Natalie J Wanner Ying Xiao Xuan-Zheng Shi Xing-Hong Jiang Jian-Guo Gu Guang-Yin Xu | 2012 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2012,18,48: | 12 |
| 20 | Surveillance and response systems for elimination of tropical diseases: summary of a thematic series in Infectious Diseases of Poverty显示文摘The peer-reviewed journal Infectious Diseases of Poverty provides a new platform to engage with,and disseminate in an open-access format,science outside traditional disciplinary boundaries.The current piece reviews a thematic series on surveillance-response systems for elimination of tropical diseases.Overall,22 contributions covering a broad array of diseases are featured–i.e.clonorchiasis,dengue,hepatitis,human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immune deficiency syndrome(HIV/AIDS),H7N9 avian influenza,lymphatic filariasis,malaria,Middle East respiratory syndrome(MERS),rabies,schistosomiasis and tuberculosis(TB).There are five scoping reviews,a commentary,a letter to the editor,an opinion piece and an editorial pertaining to the theme“Elimination of tropical disease through surveillance and response”.The remaining 13 articles are original contributions mainly covering(i)drug resistance;(ii)innovation and validation in the field of mathematical modelling;(iii)elimination of infectious diseases;and(iv)social media reports on disease outbreak notifications released by national health authorities.Analysis of the authors’affiliations reveals that scientists from the People’s Republic of China(P.R.China)are prominently represented.Possible explanations include the fact that the 2012 and 2014 international conferences pertaining to surveillance-response mechanisms were both hosted by the National Institute of Parasitic Diseases(NIPD)in Shanghai,coupled with P.R.China’s growing importance with regard to the control of infectious diseases.Within 4 to 22 months of publication,three of the 22 contributions were viewed more than 10000 times each.With sustained efforts focusing on relevant and strategic information towards control and elimination of infectious diseases,Infectious Diseases of Poverty has become a leading journal in the field of surveillance and response systems in infectious diseases and beyond. | Xia Zhou Peiling Yap Marcel Tanner Robert Bergquist Jürg Utzinger Xiao-Nong Zhou | 2016 | Infectious Diseases of Poverty2016,5,1: | 12 |
