Seeing permeability from images: fast prediction with convolutional neural networks显示文摘Fast prediction of permeability directly from images enabled by image recognition neural networks is a novel pore-scale modeling method that has a great potential. This article presents a framework that includes (1) generation of porous media samples,(2) computation of permeability via fluid dynamics simulations,(3) training of convolutional neural networks (CNN) with simulated data, and (4) validations against simulations. Comparison of machine learning results and the ground truths suggests excellent predictive performance across a wide range of porosities and pore geometries, especially for those with dilated pores. Owning to such heterogeneity, the permeability cannot be estimated using the conventional Kozeny–Carman approach. Computational time was reduced by several orders of magnitude compared to fluid dynamic simulations. We found that, by including physical parameters that are known to affect permeability into the neural network, the physics-informed CNN generated better results than regular CNN. However, improvements vary with implemented heterogeneity. | Jinlong Wu Xiaolong Yin Heng Xiao | 2018 | Science Bulletin2018,63,18: | 8
Characterization of the aerosol chemical composition during the COVID-19 lockdown period in Suzhou in the Yangtze River Delta,China显示文摘To control the spread of COVID-19,rigorous restrictions have been implemented in China, resulting in a great reduction in pollutant emissions. In this study,we evaluated the air quality in the Yangtze River Delta during the COVID-19 lockdown period using satellite and ground-based data, including particle matter(PM),trace gases,water-soluble ions(WSIs) and black carbon(BC).We found that the impacts of lockdown policy on air quality cannot be accurately assessed using MODIS aerosol optical depth(AOD) data, whereas the tropospheric nitrogen dioxide(NO_(2)) vertical column density can well reflect the influences of these restrictions on human activities.Compared to the pre-COVID period, the PM_(2.5),PM_(10),NO_(2),carbon monoxide(CO),BC and WSIs during the lockdown in Suzhou were observed to decrease by 37.2%,38.3%,64.5%,26.1%,53.3% and 58.6%,respectively,while the sulfur dioxide(SO_(2)) and ozone(O_(3)) increased by 1.5% and 104.7%.The WSIs ranked in the order of NO_(3)~->NH_(4)^(+)>SO_(4)^(2-)>Cl~->Ca^(2+)>K^(+)>Mg^(2+)>Na + during the lockdown period.By comparisons with the ion concentrations during the pre-COVID period,we found that the ions NO 3-,NH 4 +,SO_(4)^(2-),Cl~-,Ca^(2+),K^(+) and Na^(+) decreased by 66.3%,48.8%,52.9%,56.9%,57.9% and 76.3%,respectively,during the lockdown,in contrast to Mg^(2+),which increased by 30.2%.The lockdown policy was found to have great impacts on the diurnal variations of Cl~-,SO_(4)^(2-),Na^(+) and Ca^(2+). | Honglei Wang Qing Miao Lijuan Shen Qian Yang Yezheng Wu Heng Wei Yan Yin Tianliang Zhao Bin Zhu Wen Lu | 2021 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2021,33,4: | 8

Identification and characterization of rice blast resistance gene Pid4 by a combination of transcriptomic profiling and genome analysis显示文摘Map-based cloning of plant disease resistance (R) genes is time-consuming. Here, we reported the isolation of blast R gene Pid4 using comparative transcriptomic profiling and genome-wide sequence analysis. Pid4 encodes a coiled-coil nucleotide-binding site leucine-rich repeat(CC-NBS-LRR) protein and is constitutively expressed at diverse developmental stages in the rice variety Digu. The Pid4 protein is localized in both the nucleus and cytoplasm. Introduction of Pid4 into susceptible rice cultivars confers race-specific resistance to leaf and neck blast. Amino acid sequence comparison and blast resistance spectrum tests showed that Pid4 is a novel R gene, different from the previously reported R genes located in the same gene cluster. A Pid4 Indel marker was developed to facilitate the identification of Pid4 in different rice varieties. We demonstrated that a plant R gene can be quickly isolated using transcriptomic profiling coupled with genome-wide sequence analysis. | Zhixiong Chen Wen Zhao Xiaobo Zhu Chengdong Zou Junjie Yin Mawsheng Chern Xiaogang Zhou Heng Ying Xin Jiang Yongzhen Li Haicheng Liao Mengping Cheng Weitao Li Min He Jing Wang Jichun Wang Bingtian Ma Jirui Wang Shigui Li Lihuang Zhu Xuewei Chen | 2018 | Journal of Genetics and Genomics2018,45,12: | 7
Structural and biochemical mechanism for increased infectivity and immune evasion of Omicron BA.2 variant compared to BA.1 and their possible mouse origins显示文摘The Omicron BA.2 variant has become a dominant infective strain worldwide.Receptor binding studies show that the Omicron BA.2 spike trimer exhibits 11-fold and 2-fold higher potency in binding to human ACE2 than the spike trimer from the wildtype(WT)and Omicron BA.1 strains. The structure of the BA.2 spike trimer complexed with human ACE2 reveals that all three receptor-binding domains(RBDs)in the spike trimer are in open conformation, ready for ACE2 binding, thus providing a basis for the increased infectivity of the BA.2 strain.JMB2002,a therapeutic antibody that was shown to efficiently inhibit Omicron BA.1,also shows potent neutralization activities against Omicron BA.2.In addition, both BA.1 and BA.2 spike trimers are able to bind to mouse ACE2 with high potency. In contrast, the WT spike trimer binds well to cat ACE2 but not to mouse ACE2.The structures of both BA.1 and BA.2 spike trimer bound to mouse ACE2 reveal the basis for their high affinity interactions.Together, these results suggest a possible evolution pathway for Omicron BA.1 and BA.2 variants via a human-cat-mouse-human circle, which could have important implications in establishing an effective strategy for combating SARS-CoV-2 viral infections. | Youwei Xu Canrong Wu Xiaodan Cao Chunyin Gu Heng Liu Meriting Jiang Xiaoxi Wang Qingning Yuan Kai Wu Jia Liu Deyi Wang Xianqing He Xueping Wang Su-Jun Deng H.Eric Xu Wanchao Yin | 2022 | Cell Research2022,32,7: | 6

Post-marketing safety surveillance and reevaluation of Motherwort injection:A clinical study of 10094 cases显示文摘OBJECTIVE:To investigate the safety profiles of Motherwort injection(MI).METHODS:A multi-center,prospective and drugderived hospital intensive monitoring method was conducted to assess the safety of MI in real world applications. This study was based on a very large population after the injection was approved and marketed in China. All patients using the injection in participating hospitals were monitored to determine the incidence, pattern, severity and outcome of associated adverse events.RESULTS:The post-marketing surveillance was performed in 10 094 female patients from April to December,2015.The incidence of adverse drug reactions(ADRs) was 0.79‰(8/10 094).Among the 8 patients, the reported adverse events mainly included systemic abnormalities, such as fever, chills and eyelid edema;skin and appendages disorders, such as pruritus and rash;gastrointestinal disorders, such as nausea, abdominal distension and pain;heart rate and rhythm disorders, such as palpitation and increased heart rate. All of these ADRs were mild in severity.CONCLUSION:In this study the ADRs incidence rate of MI is very low, which supports that it is generally safe for use in obstetric and gynecological diseases. However, the total number of 8 ADRs recorded over a relatively short time span seems limited, and the low number of reports could not represent an absolute guarantee of safety. | Cao Shan Zhang Wenhao Zhao Ziwei Heng Mingli Bu Huaien Wang Hongwu Liu Xinghui Wang Zhong Cai Yan Ma Yuyan Cui Shihong Deng Jihong Ding Guifeng Ding Yajuan Dong Linhong Duan Zhentao Fan Ling Fan Yang Fu Fen He Jing Ji Shuying Jin Lin Li Hong Li Hongying Liao Tao Lu Wei Luo Xiucui Lü Zhihui Ma Fengchun Ma Dafeng Shi Tianyun Sun Juying Sun Xiaotong Teng Hong Wang Jinhua Wang Ruihua Wang Ying Wang Zhengling Xi Jie Xu Minjuan Xu Zhihong Yan Qian Yang Cuirong Yang Yimei Yin Jie Yu Jinhua Yuan Wenjun Zhang Guanli Zhang Meihua Zhao Renfeng Zhong Yonghong Zhou Jian | 2018 | Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine2018,38,4: | 4
A new, direct approach toward modeling thermo-coupled fatigue failure behavior of metals and alloys显示文摘The objective of this study is two-fold. Firstly, new finite strain elastoplasticity models are proposed from a fresh standpoint to achieve a comprehensive representation of thermomechanical behavior of metals and alloys over the whole deformation range up to failure. As contrasted with the usual elastoplasticity models, such new models of much simpler structure are totally free, in the sense that both the yield condition and the loading–unloading conditions need not be introduced as extrinsic coercive conditions but are automatically incorporated as inherent constitutive features into the models. Furthermore, the new models are shown to be thermodynamically consistent, in a further sense that both the specific entropy function and the Helmholtz free energy function may be presented in explicit forms, such that the thermodynamic restriction stipulated by Clausius–Duhem inequality for the intrinsic dissipation may be identically satisfied. Secondly, it is then demonstrated that the thermo-coupled fatigue failure behavior under combined cyclic changes of stress and temperature may be derived as direct consequences from the new models. This novel result implies that the new model can directly characterize the thermo-coupled fatigue failure behavior of metals and alloys, without involving any usual damage-like variables as well as any ad hoc additional criteria for failure. In particular, numerical examples show that, under cyclic changes of temperature, the fatigue characteristic curve of fatigue life versus temperature amplitude may be obtained for the first time from model prediction both in the absence and in the presence of stress. Results are in agreement with the salient features of metal fatigue failure. | Zhaoling Wang Hao Li Zhengnan Yin Heng Xiao | 2017 | Acta Mechanica Solida Sinica2017,30,1: | 3
Dye-sensitized Solar Cells with Higher J_(sc) by Using Polyvinylidene Fluoride Membrane Counter Electrodes显示文摘A flexible counter electrode(CE) for dye-sensitized solar cells(DSCs) has been fabricated using a micro-porous polyvinylidene fluoride membrane as support media and sputtered Pt as the catalytic material.Non-conventional structure DSCs have been developed by the fabricated CEs. The Pt metal was sputtered onto one surface of the membrane as the catalytic material. DSCs were assembled by attaching the Ti O2 electrode to the membrane surface without Pt coating. The membrane was with cylindrical pore geometry. It served not only as a substrate for the CE but also as a spacer for the DSC. The fabricated DSC with the flexible membrane CE showed higher photocurrent density than the conventional sandwich devices based on chemically deposited Pt/FTO glass, achieving a photovoltaic conversion efficiency of 4.43%. The results provides useful information in investigation and development of stable, low-cost, simple-design, flexible and lightweight DSCs. | Xiaodong Li Dingwen Zhang Si Chen Heng Zhang Zhuo Sun Sumei Huang Xijiang Yin | 2011 | Nano-Micro Letters2011,3,3: | 3

Integration of data-intensive,machine learning and robotic experimental approaches for accelerated discovery of catalysts in renewable energy-related reactions显示文摘Technological advancements in recent decades have greatly transformed the field of material chemistry.Juxtaposing the accentuating energy demand with the pollution associated, urgent measures are required to ensure energy maximization, while reducing the extended experimental time cycle involved in energy production. In lieu of this, the prominence of catalysts in chemical reactions, particularly energy related reactions cannot be undermined, and thus it is critical to discover and design catalyst, towards the optimization of chemical processes and generation of sustainable energy. Most recently, artificial intelligence(AI)has been incorporated into several fields, particularly in advancing catalytic processes. The integration of intensive data set, machine learning models and robotics, provides a very powerful tool in modifying material synthesis and optimization by generating multifarious dataset amenable with machine learning techniques. The employment of robots automates the process of dataset and machine learning models integration in screening intermetallic surfaces of catalyst, with extreme accuracy and swiftness comparable to a number of human researchers.Although, the utilization of robots in catalyst discovery is still in its infancy,in this review we summarize current sway of artificial intelligence in catalyst discovery, briefly describe the application of databases, machine learning models and robots in this field, with emphasis on the consolidation of these monomeric units into a tripartite flow process. We point out current trends of machine learning and hybrid models of first principle calculations(DFT)for generating dataset, which is integrable into autonomous flow process of catalyst discovery. Also,we discuss catalyst discovery for renewable energy related reactions using this tripartite flow process with predetermined descriptors. | Oyawale Adetunji Moses Wei Chen Mukhtar Lawan Adam Zhuo Wang Kaili Liu Junming Shao Zhengsheng Li Wentao Li Chensu Wang Haitao Zhao Cheng Heng Pang Zongyou Yin Xuefeng Yu | 2021 | Materials Reports(Energy)2021,1,3: | 3
Assessment of structural brain changes in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus using the MRI-based brain atrophy and lesion index显示文摘Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2 DM) often have cognitive impairment and structural brain abnormalities. The magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)-based brain atrophy and lesion index can be used to evaluate common brain changes and their correlation with cognitive function, and can therefore also be used to reflect whole-brain structural changes related to T2 DM.A total of 136 participants(64 men and 72 women, aged 55–86 years) were recruited for our study between January 2014 and December 2016.All participants underwent MRI and Mini-Mental State Examination assessment(including 42 healthy control,38 T2 DM without cognitive impairment,26 with cognitive impairment but without T2 DM,and 30 T2 DM with cognitive impairment participants). The total and sub-category brain atrophy and lesion index scores in patients with T2 DM with cognitive impairment were higher than those in healthy controls.Differences in the brain atrophy and lesion index of gray matter lesions and subcortical dilated perivascular spaces were found between non-T2 DM patients with cognitive impairment and patients with T2 DM and cognitive impairment. After adjusting for age,the brain atrophy and lesion index retained its capacity to identify patients with T2 DM with cognitive impairment. These findings suggest that the brain atrophy and lesion index, based on T1-weighted and T2-weighted imaging,is of clinical value for identifying patients with T2 DM and cognitive impairment.Gray matter lesions and subcortical dilated perivascular spaces may be potential diagnostic markers of T2 DM that is complicated by cognitive impairment. This study was approved by the Medical Ethics Committee of University of South China(approval No.USC20131109003) on November 9,2013,and was retrospectively registered with the Chinese Clinical Trial Registry(registration No.Chi CTR1900024150) on June 27,2019. | Heng Zhao Fang Wang Guang-Hua Luo Hao Lei Fei Peng Qiu-Ping Ren Wei Chen Yan-Fang Wu Li-Chun Yin Jin-Cai Liu Shi-Nong Pan | 2022 | Neural Regeneration Research2022,17,3: | 3
Particulate matter 2.5 triggers airway inflammation and bronchial hyperresponsiveness in mice by activating the SIRT2-p65 pathway显示文摘Exposure to particulate matter 2.5(PM2.5)potentially triggers airway inflammation by activating nuclear factor-κB(NF-κB).Sirtuin 2(SIRT2)is a key modulator in inflammation. However, the function and specific mechanisms of SIRT2 in PM2.5-induced airway inflammation are largely understudied. Therefore, this work investigated the mechanisms of SIRT2 in regulating the phosphorylation and acetylation of p65 influenced by PM2.5-induced airway inflammation and bronchial hyperresponsiveness. Results revealed that PM2.5 exposure lowered the expression and activity of SIRT2 in bronchial tissues.Subsequently,SIRT2 impairment promoted the phosphorylation and acetylation of p65 and activated the NF-κB signaling pathway. The activation of p65 triggered airway inflammation, increment of mucus secretion by goblet cells, and acceleration of tracheal stenosis.Meanwhile,p65 phosphorylation and acetylation, airway inflammation, and bronchial hyperresponsiveness were deteriorated in SIRT2 knockout mice exposed to PM2.5.Triptolide(a specific p65 inhibitor)reversed p65 activation and ameliorated PM2.5-induced airway inflammation and bronchial hyperresponsiveness. Our findings provide novel insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying the toxicity of PM2.5 exposure.Triptolide inhibition of p65 phosphorylation and acetylation could be an effective therapeutic approach in averting PM2.5-induced airway inflammation and bronchial hyperresponsiveness. | Manling Liu Zhaoling Shi Yue Yin Yishi Wang Nan Mu Chen Li Heng Ma Qiong Wang | 2021 | Frontiers of Medicine2021,15,5: | 2

The Earth's inner core deviation to plate movement显示文摘Under the premise of the Earth’s layer structure and mass distribution, the solid inner core cannot be stable in the center of the sphere. Thus, the deviation of the inner core is towards the sphere’s center and the liquid outer core must have asymmetrical thermal convection. Based on the two suggestions, a concise and self-consistent global motion model can be built. The model consists of the following cycle: an asymmetrical thermal convection structure in the outer core led by the dislocation of the inner core→the plume is in special upwell position because of differential activation→the formation and split of lithosphere→the split plates drift and assemble in a new location, the mass of which causes the inner core to deviate towards this direction again→the new asymmetry is formed. As this circulation continues, a definite and periodical motion emerges/forms. Its nonlinear features result in the Earth’s motion with simple mechanisms but complex behavior. | 18 | Targeting lactate dehydrogenase A (LDHA) exerts antileukemic effects on T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia显示文摘Background:T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia(T-ALL)is an uncommon and aggressive subtype of acute lymphoblastic leukemia(ALL).In the serum of T-ALL patients, the activity of lactate dehydrogenase A(LDHA)is increased. We proposed that targeting LDHA may be a potential strategy to improve T-ALL outcomes. The current study was conducted to investigate the antileukemic effect of LDHA gene-targeting treatment on T-ALL and the underlying molecular mechanism. Methods:Primary T-ALL cell lines Jurkat and DU528 were treated with the LDH inhibitor oxamate.MTT,colony formation, apoptosis, and cell cycle assays were performed to investigate the effects of oxamate on T-ALL cells.Quantitative real-time PCR(qPCR)and Western blotting analyses were applied to determine the related signaling pathways.A mitochondrial reactive oxygen species(ROS)assay was performed to evaluate ROS production after T-ALL cells were treated with oxamate.A T-ALL transgenic zebrafish model with LDHA gene knockdown was established using CRISPR/Cas9 gene-editing technology, and then TUNEL,Western blotting, and T-ALL tumor progression analyses were conducted to investigate the effects of LDHA gene knockdown on T-ALL transgenic zebrafish. Results:Oxamate significantly inhibited proliferation and induced apoptosis of Jurkat and DU528 cells. It also arrested Jurkat and DU528 cells in G0/G1 phase and stimulated ROS production(all P<0.001).Blocking LDHA significantly decreased the gene and protein expression of c-Myc,as well as the levels of phosphorylated serine/threonine kinase(AKT)and glycogen synthase kinase 3 beta(GSK-3β)in the phosphatidylinositol 3′-kinase(PI3K)signaling pathway.LDHA gene knockdown delayed disease progression and down-regulated c-Myc mRNA and protein expression in T-ALL transgenic zebrafish. Conclusion:Targeting LDHA exerted an antileukemic effect on T-ALL,representing a potential strategy for T-ALL treatment. | Haizhi Yu Yafei Yin Yifang Yi Zhao Cheng Wenyong Kuang Ruijuan Li Haiying Zhong Yajuan Cui Lingli Yuan Fanjie Gong Zhihua Wang Heng Li Hongling Peng Guangsen Zhang | 2020 | Cancer Communications2020,40,10: | 2
Lipocalin-2-induced proliferative endoplasmic reticulum stress participates in Kawasaki disease-related pulmonary arterial abnormalities显示文摘Clinical cases have reported pulmonary arterial structural and functional abnormalities in patients with Kawasaki disease(KD);however, the underlying mechanisms are unclear. In this study,a KD rat model was established via the intraperitoneal injection of Lactobacillus casei cell wall extract(LCWE).The results showed that pulmonary arterial functional and structural abnormalities were observed in KD rats.Furthermore, proliferative endoplasmic reticulum stress(ER stress)was observed in the pulmonary arteries of KD rats.Notably, the level of lipocalin-2(Lcn 2),a trigger factor of inflammation, was remarkably elevated in the plasma and lung tissues of KD rats;increased Lcn 2 levels following LCWE stimulation may result from polymorphonuclear neutrophils(PMNs).Correspondingly,in cultured pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells(PASMCs),Lcn 2 markedly augmented the cleavage and nuclear localization of activating transcription factor-6(ATF6),upregulated the transcription of glucose regulated protein 78(GRP78)and neurite outgrowth inhibitor(NOGO),and promoted PASMCs proliferation. However, proapoptotic C/EBP homologous protein(CHOP)and caspase 12 levels were not elevated.Treatment with 4-phenyl butyric acid(4-PBA,a specific inhibitor of ER stress)inhibited PASMCs proliferation induced by Lcn 2 and attenuated pulmonary arterial abnormalities and right ventricular hypertrophy and reduced right ventricular systolic pressure in KD rats.In conclusion,Lcn 2 remarkably facilitates proliferative ER stress in PASMCs,which probably accounts for KD-related pulmonary arterial abnormalities. | Zhaoling Shi Yue Yin Chen Li Hui Ding Nan Mu Yishi Wang Shanshan Jin Heng Ma Manling Liu Jie Zhou | 2021 | Science China(Life Sciences)2021,64,6: | 1
Evaluation of groundwater sustainability based on groundwater age simulation in the Zhangye Basin of Heihe River watershed, northwestern China显示文摘Water resources, as the primary limiting factor, constrain the economic and social development in arid inland areas. The Zhangye Basin is a representative area of inland river basins, which is located in the middle parts of the Heihe River watershed, northwestern China. Facing with the huge water shortage, people exploited ground- water at a large scale in recent years. The reducing recharge from surface water and over-exploitation of ground- water led to the decline of groundwater levels and threatened the sustainability of water resources. This study con- structed a conceptual and numerical groundwater flow model and calibrated the model based on the observed wells. A solute transport model was built using MT3DMS to calculate the groundwater age distribution in the Zhangye Basin. The simulated result shows that the youngest groundwater is distributed near the most upstream areas in the model domain, which is less than 1,000 a, older groundwater is distributed in deeper parts of the aquifer and near the discharge outlets, ranging from 6,000 a to over 20,000 a. Spatial variation of groundwater ages in the middle area indicates the recharge diversity between unconfined and confined aquifer. Groundwater age can serve as an indicator to evaluate groundwater's renewal capacity and sustainability. The formation of groundwater resources in the lower stream area would spend 10,000 a or even more than 20,000 a, so exploitation of groundwater in these areas should be restrained. | Heng WEI HongLang XIAO ZhenLiang YIN ZhiXiang LU | 2014 | Journal of Arid Land2014,6,3: | 1
