| 1 | Chinese deserts and sand fields in Last Glacial Maximum and Holocene Optimum显示文摘The Last Glacial Maximum (LGM, c. 26-16 ka) and the Holocene Optimum (HO, c. 9-5 ka) were characterized by cold-dry and warm-wet climates respectively in the recently geological Earth. How Chinese deserts and sand fields responded to these distinctive climatic changes is still not clear, however. To reconstruct environments of the deserts and sand fields during the LGM and HO is helpful to understand the forcing mechanisms of environment change in this arid region, and to test paleoclimatic modeling results. Through our long-term field and laboratory investigations, 400 optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) ages and more than 100 depositional records in the Chinese deserts and sand fields were obtained; on the basis of these data, we reconstruct spatial distributions of the deserts and sand fields during the LGM and HO. Our results show that the sand fields of Mu Us, Hunshandake, Horqin and Hulun Buir in northern and northeastern China had expanded 25%, 37%, 38% and 270%, respectively, during the LGM; the sand fields of Gonghe in the northeastern Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau had expanded 20%, and the deserts of Badain Jaran, Tengger in central northern China had expanded 39% and 29% separately during the LGM; the deserts of Taklimakan, Gurbantünggüt and Kumtag in northwestern China had expanded 10%-20% respectively, compared to their modern areas. On the other hand, all of the sand fields were nearly completely covered by vegetation during the HO; the deserts in northwestern and central northern China were reduced by around 5%-20% in area during this time. Lakes in this arid region were probably expanded during the HO but this conclusion needs more investigation. Compared with the geological distributions of deserts and sand fields, human activity has clearly changed (expanded) the area of active sand dunes at the present time. | 2 | Clinicopathologic characteristics and prognosis of gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms: a multicenter study in South China显示文摘Background: Gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms(GEP-NENs) are a heterogeneous group of rare tumors. Many issues in terms of epidemiologic features, pathogenesis, and treatment of GEP-NENs are still under discussion. Our study aimed to analyze the clinicopathologic characteristics and prognosis of Chinese patients with GEP-NENs.Methods: Complete clinicopathologic data and survival information of 1183 patients with GEP-NENs treated between 2005 and 2015 were collected from five medical centers in Guangdong Province, China. Patient survival was estimated using the Kaplan–Meier method and analyzed using the log-rank test; prognostic factors were analyzed using the Cox proportional hazards model.Results: The most common tumor location was the rectum(37.4%), followed by the pancreas(28.1%), stomach(20.7%), small intestine(7.2%), appendix(3.4%), and colon(3.3%). After initial definitive diagnosis, 1016(85.9%) patients underwent surgery. The 1-, 3-, and 5-year overall survival(OS) rates for the entire cohort were 87.9%, 78.5%, and 72.8%, respectively. The 3-year OS rates of patients with G1, G2, and G3 tumors were 93.1%, 82.7%, and 43.1%, respectively(P < 0.001). The 3-year OS rates of patients with stage I, II, III, and IV tumors were 96.0%, 87.3%, 64.0%, and 46.8%, respectively(P < 0.001). Patients with distant metastasis who underwent palliative surgery had a longer survival than those who did not(P = 0.003). Similar survival benefits of palliative surgery were observed in patients with neuroendocrine tumor(P y, M category, and sur= 0.031) or neuroendocrine carcinoma(P gery were found to be independent prog= 0.046). In multivariate analysis, age, grade, N categornostic factors.Conclusions: Patients with GEP-NENs who are women, younger than 50 years old, have smaller tumor size, have lower tumor grade, have lower T/N/M category, and who undergo surgery can have potentially longer survival time. Our data showed that surgery can improve the prognosis of GEP-NEN patients with distant metastasis. | 5 | Simultaneous Detection and Removal of Formaldehyde at Room Temperature: Janus Au@ZnO@ZIF-8 Nanoparticles显示文摘The detection and removal of volatile organic compounds(VOCs) are of great importance to reduce the risk of indoor air quality concerns. This study reports the rational synthesis of a dual-functional Janus nanostructure and its feasibility for simultaneous detection and removal of VOCs.The Janus nanostructure was synthesized via an anisotropic growth method, composed of plasmonic nanoparticles,semiconductors, and metal organic frameworks(e.g.,Au@ZnO@ZIF-8). It exhibits excellent selective detection to formaldehyde(HCHO, as a representative VOC) at room temperature over a wide range of concentrations(from 0.25 to100 ppm), even in the presence of water and toluene molecules as interferences. In addition, HCHO was also found to be partially oxidized into non-toxic formic acid simultaneously with detection. | 10 | Poisson's ratios and S-wave velocities of the Xishancun landslide,Sichuan,China,inferred from high-frequency receiver functions of local earthquakes显示文摘Landslides are recurrent geological phenomena on Earth that cause heavy casualties and property losses annually.In this study,we use the V_(p)-k stacking and nonlinear waveform inversion methods of high-frequency receiver functions extracted from local earthquakes,to sequentially invert Poisson’s ratios and S-wave velocities of the Quaternary Xishancun landslide,which is composed of three segments,i.e.,h1,h2,and h3 from bottom to top.Our results show that Poisson’s ratio values are generally higher than 0.33 and that the S-wave velocities vary from 0.1 to 0.9 km s^(-1).High Poisson’s ratios(>0.44)are mainly distributed in the juncture regions between different segments,as well as the western edge of h2.These zones show significant variation in landslide thickness and are potentially hazardous areas.Low velocities of 0.05–0.2 km s^(-1)with thicknesses of 10–30m are widely observed in the lower layer of the landslide.The high Poisson’s ratios and low-velocity layer may be related to water-rich materials in these areas.Our study suggests that the high-frequency receiver functions from local earthquakes can be used to delineate geotechnical structures,which is valuable for landslide stability analysis and hazard mitigation. | Zigen WEI Risheng CHU Zhiwei LI Minhan SHENG Qiu ZENG | 2021 | Science China Earth Sciences2021,64,7: | 3 |

| 12 | Osteopontin inhibits osteoarthritis progression via the OPN/CD44/PI3K signal axis显示文摘Chondrocyte degeneration and extracellular matrix component loss are the primary causes of osteoarthritis(OA).OA can be treated by inhibiting chondrocyte degeneration and increasing extracellular matrix component secretion.Osteopontin(OPN),a multifunctional protein,has gained immense attention with regard to its involvement in OA.This study aimed to explore the therapeutic value and mechanism of action of OPN in OA treatment.Results of the histomorphological analysis revealed a worn-off OA cartilage tissue surface,cartilage matrix layer deterioration,and calcium salt deposition.Compared to that in normal chondrocytes,in OA chondrocytes,the OPN,CD44,and PI3K protein and mRNA expression was upregulated.Further,siOPN,rhOPN,and rhOPN plus LS-C179404 interfered with OA chondrocytes.As verified in mice,OPN directly inhibited the expression level of PI3K in OA chondrocytes by binding with CD44.Morphological analysis of the knee joints demonstrated that OPN effectively inhibited OA progression via the OPN/CD44/PI3K signal axis.In conclusion,OPN activates intracellular PI3K signaling molecules by binding to CD44 on the cell surface to cause downstream cascading effects,thereby delaying chondrocyte degeneration and reducing cartilage matrix component loss;therefore,OPN is a potential therapeutic agent for OA. | Qing Liu Hao Zeng Yuhao Yuan Zhiwei Wang Ziyi Wu Wei Luo | 2022 | Genes & Diseases2022,9,1: | 2 |
| 13 | Spatial patterns of urban green space and its actual utilization status in China based on big data analysis显示文摘Urban green space(UGS)is essential for sustainable urbanization and human well-being.The utilization status of UGS is closely related to the provision of ecosystem services for urban residents.Limitations on data availability,however,have led to the absence of a comprehensive approach for evaluating the actual utilization status of UGS at a large scale.Furthermore,differences in actual UGS utilization between intra-urban and peri-urban areas have not received enough attention.This study used big data analysis by combining point of interest(POI)and land use and cover change(LUCC)to quantify the spatial patterns of UGS utilization,and to evaluate the actual utilization status of UGS in 366 cities on the Chinese mainland.We also explored the differences in the actual utilization of UGS in intra-urban and peri-urban areas.The results showed that 94.01%of UGS resources in China had not been utilized.There was a clear pattern of spatial mismatch between the stock and the actual utilization of UGS,especially in the north-western region indicated by the Hu Huanyong Line.The actual utilization rate of UGS was closely related to the regional develop-ment level.There was a certain mismatch between the actual utilization and stock of intraurban green space(IUGS).The hot spots of the actual utilization rate of IUGS were in Yunnan,Guizhou,and Sichuan Provinces in southwestern China.The differ-ences in UGS actual utilization rates between IUGS and peri-urban green space(PUGS)were small in eastern China,but large in south-western and northwestern China.The actual utilization rate of IUGS in most Chinese cities was significantly larger than that of PUGS,indicating that PUGS were not well utilized.Our results provide scientific support for urban and regional planners in targeting specific areas for UGS design and development,and in optimizing future UGS planning in China. | Yiyi Huang Tao Lin Guoqin Zhang Yongguan Zhu Zhiwei Zeng Hong Ye | 2021 | Big Earth Data2021,5,3: | 2 |
| 14 | The Effects of Polyphenol Oxidase and Cycloheximide on the Early Stage of Browning in Phalaenopsis Explants显示文摘Explant browning is one of the major problems in the tissue culture process, and polyphenol oxidase(PPO), is the major proteases involved in plant tissue browning. We investigated the effects of polyphenol oxidase on the early stage of browning in explants of the orchid Phalaenopsis. Our results show that PPO activity was significantly higher in explants cultured for 3 d than in the 0 h control. The levels of PPO transcripts and PPO protein were significantly higher in explants cultured for 6 h compared to the 0 h control; these high expression levels were maintained over increasing cultivation time. Cycloheximide(CHX) treatment reduced PPO transcript levels, PPO protein levels, and PPO enzyme activity. High levels of PPO m RNA and PPO protein were detected in the cytoplasm and vascular bundles of Phalaenopsis explants cultured for 6 h compared to explants cultured for 0 h, 24 h, and 3 d. | 16 | Characteristics of Eddy Current Attenuation and Thickness Measurement of Metallic Plate显示文摘In eddy current testing, the law of attenuation of eddy current(EC) is of great concern. In conductive half space under the excitation of uniform magnetic field, the EC density decreases exponentially in the depth direction. However, in conductor with finite thickness tested by coil, the distribution of EC in the depth direction is more complicated. This paper studies the characteristics of EC attenuation in metallic plate of finite thickness. Simulation results show that there is an EC reflection at the bottom of plate, which changes the law of EC attenuation. A new concept, namely the equivalent attenuation coefficient, is proposed to quantify the speed of EC attenuation. The characteristics of EC attenuation are utilized to explain the nonmonotonic relation between coil voltage and plate thickness. Procedure of selecting frequency is discussed.
