| 1 | Programmable time-domain digital-coding metasurface for non-linear harmonic manipulation and new wireless communication systems显示文摘Optical non-linear phenomena are typically observed in natural materials interacting with light at high intensities, and they benefit a diverse range of applications from communication to sensing. However,controlling harmonic conversion with high efficiency and flexibility remains a major issue in modern optical and radio-frequency systems. Here, we introduce a dynamic time-domain digital-coding metasurface that enables efficient manipulation of spectral harmonic distribution. By dynamically modulating the local phase of the surface reflectivity, we achieve accurate control of different harmonics in a highly programmable and dynamic fashion, enabling unusual responses, such as velocity illusion. As a relevant application, we propose and realize a novel architecture for wireless communication systems based on the time-domain digital-coding metasurface, which largely simplifies the architecture of modern communication systems, at the same time yielding excellent performance for real-time signal transmission. | 3 | BMAL1 regulates mitochondrial fission and mitophagy through mitochondrial protein BNIP3 and is critical in the development of dilated cardiomyopathy显示文摘Dysregulation of circadian rhythms associates with cardiovascular disorders.It is known that deletion of the core circadian gene Bma/1 in mice causes dilated car-diomyopathy.However,the biological rhythm regulation system in mouse is very different from that of humans.Whether BMAL1 plays a role in regulating human heart function remains unclear.Here we generated a BMAL1 knockout human embryonic stem cell(hESC)model and further derived human BMAL1 deficient cardiomy-ocytes.We show that BMAL1 deficient hESC-derived cardiomyocytes exhibited typical phenotypes of dilated cardiomyopathy including attenuated contractility,cal-cium dysregulation,and disorganized myofilaments.In addition,mitochondrial fission and mitophagy were suppressed in BMAL1 deficient hESC-cardiomyocytes,which resulted in significantly attenuated mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation and compromised cardiomy-ocyte function.We also found that BMAL1 binds to the E-box element in the promoter region of BNIP3 gene and specifically controls BNIP3 protein expression.BMAL1 knockout directly reduced BNIP3 protein level,causing compromised mitophagy and mitochondria dysfunction and thereby leading to compromised cardiomyocyte function.Our data indicated that the core circadian gene S/VMLf is critical for normal mitochondria activities and cardiac function.Circadian rhythm disruption may directly link to compromised heart function and dilated cardiomyopathy in humans. | Ermin Li Xiuya Li Jie Huang Chen Xu Qianqian Liang Kehan Ren Aobing Bai Chao Lu Ruizhe Qian Ning Sun | 2020 | Protein & Cell2020,11,9: | 17 |

| 5 | Calcium channel blockers reduce severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus (SFTSV) related fatality显示文摘Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS),an emerging tick-borne infectious disease caused by a novel phlebovirus (SFTS virus, SFTSV), was listed among the top 10 priority infectious diseases by the World Health Organization due to its high fatality of 12%-50% and possibility of pandemic transmission. Currently, effective anti-SFTSV intervention remains unavailable. Here, by screening a library of FDA-approved drugs, we found that benidipine hydrochloride, a calcium channel blocker (CCB), inhibited SFTSV replication in vitro. Benidipine hydrochloride was revealed to inhibit virus infection through impairing virus internalization and genome replication. Further experiments showed that a broad panel of CCBs, including nifedipine, inhibited SFTSV infection. The anti-SFTSV effect of these two CCBs was further an a lyzed in a humanized mouse model in which CCB treatment resulted in reduced viral load and decreased fatality rate. Importantly, by performing a retrospective clinical investigation on a large cohort of 2087 SFTS patients, we revealed that nifedipine administration enhaneed virus clearance, improved clinical recovery, and remarkably reduced the case fatality rate by >5-fold. | 6 | Application of next-generation sequencing technology to precision medicine in cancer: joint consensus of the Tumor Biomarker Committee of the Chinese Society of Clinical Oncology显示文摘Next-generation sequencing(NGS) technology is capable of sequencing millions or billions of DNA molecules simultaneously.Therefore, it represents a promising tool for the analysis of molecular targets for the initial diagnosis of disease, monitoring of disease progression, and identifying the mechanism of drug resistance. On behalf of the Tumor Biomarker Committee of the Chinese Society of Clinical Oncology(CSCO) and the China Actionable Genome Consortium(CAGC), the present expert group hereby proposes advisory guidelines on clinical applications of NGS technology for the analysis of cancer driver genes for precision cancer therapy. This group comprises an assembly of laboratory cancer geneticists, clinical oncologists, bioinformaticians,pathologists, and other professionals. After multiple rounds of discussions and revisions, the expert group has reached a preliminary consensus on the need of NGS in clinical diagnosis, its regulation, and compliance standards in clinical sample collection. | 9 | Association Between Serum Uric Acid and Prevalence of Type 2 Diabetes Diagnosed using HbA1c Criteria Among Chinese Adults in Qingdao,China显示文摘Objective To determine whether elevated serum uric acid(UA)levels are associated with type 2 diabetes diagnosed using Hb A1 c levels among Chinese adults.Methods We conducted two population-based cross-sectional studies in Qingdao in China in 2006 and 2009.A total of 6894(39.4% men)subjects aged 35-74 years were included in the data analysis.Newly diagnosed diabetes was defined as Hb A1 c level of ≥6.5%,and prediabetes was classified as Hb A1 c level between 5.7% and 6.4% according to the International Diabetes Federation criteria.Multivariate logistic regression was employed to assess the association between UA and prevalence of type 2 diabetes defined using Glycated hemoglobin A1c(Hb A1 c levels.Results Subjects with prediabetes had higher UA levels than those with normal glucose tolerance,newly diagnosed diabetes,and known diabetes,with corresponding values of 325.1(82.5)μmol/L,310.9(84.2)μmol/L,291.3(81.7)μmol/L,305.2(83.6)μmol/L,respectively(P<0.001 for all comparisons).Binary logistic regression analysis showed that UA was a possible predictor for the prevalence of type 2 diabetes diagnosed using Hb A1 c levels,and the second quartile of UA levels had a higher odds ratio(OR:4.088;95% CI:2.900-5.765)for Hb A1 c than the other quartiles after adjusting for age,body mass index,sex,marital status,education,income,alcohol consumption,smoking,and cardiometabolic parameters.Conclusion Serum UA is significantly associated with type 2 diabetes diagnosed using Hb A1 c levels,independent of other cardiometabolic parameters. | XUE Bai TAN Ji Bin NING Feng SUN Jian Ping ZHANG Ke Yi LIU Li WANG Shao Jie ZHANG Dong Feng QIAO Qing PANG Zeng Chang | 2015 | Biomedical and Environmental Sciences2015,28,12: | 9 |
| 10 | Fluorescence regional integration and differential fluorescence spectroscopy for analysis of structural characteristics and proton binding properties of fulvic acid sub-fractions显示文摘Structural characteristics and proton binding properties of sub-fractions(FA3–FA13) of fulvic acid(FA), eluted stepwise by pyrophosphate buffer were examined by use of fluorescence titration combined with fluorescence regional integration(FRI) and differential fluorescence spectroscopy(DFS). Humic-like(H-L) and fulvic-like(F-L) materials, which accounted for more than 80% of fluorescence response, were dominant in five sub-fractions of FA. Based on FRI analysis, except the response of F-L materials in FA9 and FA13, maximum changes in percent fluorescence response were less than 10% as pH was increased from 2.5 to 11.5.Contents of carboxylic and phenolic groups were compared for fluorescence peaks of FA sub-fractions based on pH-dependent fluorescence derived from DFS. Static quenching was the dominant mechanism for binding of protons by FA sub-fractions. Dissociation constants(p Ka) were calculated by use of results of DFS and the modified Stern-Volmer relationship. The p Kaof H-L, F-L, tryptophan-like and tyrosine-like materials of FA subfractions exhibited ranges of 3.17–4.06, 3.12–3.97, 4.14–4.45 and 4.25–4.76, respectively, for acidic pHs. At basic pHs, values of p Ka for corresponding materials were in ranges of 9.71–10.24, 9.62–10.99, 9.67–10.31 and 9.33–10.28, respectively. At acidic pH, protein-like(P-L)materials had greater affinities for protons than did either H-L or F-L materials. The dicarboxylic and phenolic groups were likely predominant sites of protonation for both H-L and F-L materials at both acidic and basic pHs. | 11 | A novel protein-repellent dental composite containing 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine显示文摘Secondary caries due to biofilm acids is a primary cause of dental composite restoration failure.To date,there have been no reports of dental composites that can repel protein adsorption and inhibit bacteria attachment.The objectives of this study were to develop a protein-repellent dental composite by incorporating 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine(MPC) and to investigate for the first time the effects of MPC mass fraction on protein adsorption,bacteria attachment,biofilm growth,and mechanical properties.Composites were synthesized with 0(control),0.75%,1.5%,2.25%,3%,4.5%and 6%of MPC by mass.A commercial composite was also tested as a control.Mechanical properties were measured in three-point flexure.Protein adsorption onto the composite was determined by the microbicinchoninic acid method.A human saliva microcosm biofilm model was used.Early attachment at 4 h,biofilm at 2 days,live/dead staining and colony-forming units(CFUs) of biofilms grown on the composites were investigated.Composites with MPC of up to 3%had mechanical properties similar to those without MPC and those of the commercial control,whereas 4.5%and 6%MPC decreased the mechanical properties(P<0.05).Increasing MPC from 0 to 3%reduced the protein adsorption on composites(P<0.05).The composite with 3%MPC had protein adsorption that was 1/12 that of the control(P<0.05).Oral bacteria early attachment and biofilm growth were also greatly reduced on the composite with 3%MPC,compared to the control(P<0.05).In conclusion,incorporation of MPC into composites at 3%greatly reduced protein adsorption,bacteria attachment and biofilm CFUs,without compromising mechanical properties.Protein-repellent composites could help to repel bacteria attachment and plaque build-up to reduce secondary caries.The protein-repellent method might be applicable to other dental materials. | Ning Zhang Chen Chen Mary AS Melo Yu-Xing Bai Lei Cheng Hockin HK Xu | 2015 | International Journal of Oral Science2015,7,2: | 8 |
| 12 | Experimental and analytical studies on multiple tuned mass dampers for seismic protection of porcelain electrical equipment显示文摘Porcelain electrical equipment(PEE),such as current transformers,is critical to power supply systems,but its seismic performance during past earthquakes has not been satisfactory.This paper studies the seismic performance of two typical types of PEE and proposes a damping method for PEE based on multiple tuned mass dampers(MTMD).An MTMD damping device involving three mass units,named a triple tuned mass damper(TTMD),is designed and manufactured.Through shake table tests and finite element analysis,the dynamic characteristics of the PEE are studied and the effectiveness of the MTMD damping method is verified.The adverse influence of MTMD redundant mass to damping efficiency is studied and relevant equations are derived.MTMD robustness is verified through adjusting TTMD control frequencies.The damping effectiveness of TTMD,when the peak ground acceleration far exceeds the design value,is studied.Both shake table tests and finite element analysis indicate that MTMD is effective and robust in attenuating PEE seismic responses.TTMD remains effective when the PGA far exceeds the design value and when control deviations are considered. | Bai Wen Dai Junwu Zhou Huimeng Yang Yongqiang Ning Xiaoqing | 2017 | Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Vibration2017,16,4: | 8 |
| 13 | The geomechanics of Shenhua carbon dioxide capture and storage(CCS) demonstration project in Ordos Basin,China显示文摘Carbon dioxide(CO_2) capture and storage(CCS) is considered widely as one of promising options for CO_2emissions reduction,especially for those countries with coal-dominant energy mix like China.Injecting and storing a huge volume of CO_2 in deep formations are likely to cause a series of geomechanical issues,including ground surface uplift,damage of caprock integrity,and fault reactivation.The Shenhua CCS demonstration project in Ordos Basin,China,is the first and the largest full-chain saline aquifer storage project of CO_2 in Asia.The injection started in 2010 and ended in 2015.during which totally 0.3 million tonnes(Mt) CO_2 was injected.The project is unique in which CO_2 was injected into 18 sandstone formations simultaneously and the overlying coal seams will be mined after the injection stopped in 2015.Hence,intense geomechanical studies and monitoring works have been conducted in recent years,including possible damage resulting from the temperature difference between injected CO_2 and formations,injection induced stress and deformation change,potential failure mode and safety factor,interaction between coal mining and CO_2 geological storage,determination of injection pressure limit,and surface monitoring by the interferometric synthetic aperture radar(InSAR) technology.In this paper,we first described the background and its geological conditions of the Shenhua CCS demonstration project.Then,we gave an introduction to the coupled thermo-hydro-mechano-chemical(THMC) processes in CO_2 geological storage,and mapped the key geomechanical issues into the THMC processes accordingly.Next,we proposed a generalized geomechanical research flowchart for CO_2 geological storage projects.After that,we addressed and discussed some typical geomechanical issues,including design of injection pressure limit.CO_2 injection induced near-field damage,and interaction between CO_2geological storage and coal mining,in the Shenhua CCS demonstration project.Finally,we concluded some insights to this CCS project. | Xiaochun Li Qi Li Bing Bai Ning Wei Wei Yuan | 2016 | Journal of Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering2016,8,6: | 8 |

| 18 | Comparing the Diagnostic Criteria of MAFLD and NAFLD in the Chinese Population:A Population-based Prospective Cohort Study显示文摘Background and Aims:Metabolic dysfunction-associ-ated fatty liver disease(MAFLD)is a new concept,pro-posed in 2020;however,its applicability in Asia populations has yet to be evaluated.Therefore,we aimed to compare the difference in epidemiological and clinical characteris-tics between MAFLD and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD)among Asian populations.Methods:Based on the Jinchang cohort,30,633 participants were collected.The prevalence and incidence of MAFLD and NAFLD were used to analyze the epidemic characteristics and its overlapping effects.In addition,the corresponding clinical character-istics of the two diagnostic criteria populations were com-pared.Results:The prevalence rates of MAFLD and NAFLD were 21.03%and 18.83%,respectively.After an average 2.28-year follow-up,the incidence densities of MAFLD and NAFLD were 41.58 per 1,000 person-years and 37.69 per 1,000 person-years,respectively.With the increase of baseline age,body mass index(BMI),and waist circumfer-ence(WC)levels,the prevalence and incidence of MAFLD and NAFLD were on the rise(all ptrend<0.05).Among the total patients diagnosed at baseline or follow-up,most pa-tients had both MAFLD and NAFLD,accounting for 78.84%and 82.88%,respectively.Compared with NAFLD,MAFLD patients had greater proportions of males and metabolic diseases(diabetes,dyslipidemia),and had higher BMI,WC,liver enzymes,blood glucose,and lipid levels in the base-line diagnosis patients(p<0.05).Additionally,lean MAFLD patients had higher metabolic disorders than lean NAFLD patients(p<0.05).Conclusions:Compared with NAFLD,the newly proposed definition of MAFLD is more practical and accurate,and it can help identify more fatty liver pa-tients with high-risk diseases. | Cheng Yu Minzhen Wang Shan Zheng Miao Xia Hongyan Yang Desheng Zhang Chun Yin Ning Cheng Yana Bai | 2022 | Journal of Clinical and Translational Hepatology2022,10,1: | 7 |

Hard tissues include bone and tooth structures that contain calcium phosphate minerals.Smart biomaterial-based tissue engineering and regenerative medicine methods have the exciting potential to meet this urgent need. Smart biomaterials and constructs refer to biomaterials and constructs that possess instructive/inductive or triggering/stimulating effects on cells and tissues by engineering the material's responsiveness to internal or external stimuli or have intelligently tailored properties and functions that can promote tissue repair and regeneration. The smart material-based approaches include smart scaffolds and stem cell constructs for bone tissue engineering; smart drug delivery systems to enhance bone regeneration; smart dental resins that respond to pH to protect tooth structures; smart pH-sensitive dental materials to selectively inhibit acid-producing bacteria; smart polymers to modulate biofilm species away from a pathogenic composition and shift towards a healthy composition; and smart materials to suppress biofilms and avoid drug resistance. These smart biomaterials can not only deliver and guide stem cells to improve tissue regeneration and deliver drugs and bioactive agents with spatially and temporarily controlled releases but can also modulate/suppress biofilms and combat infections in wound sites.
