4The role of gut microbiota in the gut-brain axis:current challenges and perspectives显示文摘Brain and the gastrointestinal(GI)tract are intimately con-nected to form a bidirectional neurohumoral communica-tion system.The communication between gut and brain,knows as the gut-brain axis,is so well established that the functional status of gut is always related to the condi-tion of brain.The researches on the gut-brain axis were traditionally focused on the psychological status affecting the function of the GI tract.However,recent evidences showed that gut microbiota communicates with the brain via the gut-brain axis to modulate brain development and behavioral phenotypes.These recent fi ndings on the new role of gut microbiota in the gut-brain axis implicate that gut microbiota could associate with brain functions as well as neurological diseases via the gut-brain axis.To elucidate the role of gut microbiota in the gut-brain axis,precise identification of the composition of microbes constituting gut microbiota is an essential step.However,identifi cation of microbes constituting gut microbiota has been the main technological challenge currently due to massive amount of intestinal microbes and the diffi culties in culture of gut microbes.Current methods for identifi ca-tion of microbes constituting gut microbiota are depend-ent on omics analysis methods by using advanced high tech equipment.Here,we review the association of gut microbiota with the gut-brain axis,including the pros and cons of the current high throughput methods for identi-fi cation of microbes constituting gut microbiota to eluci-date the role of gut microbiota in the gut-brain axis.Xiao Chen Roshan D’Souza Seong-Tshool Hong 2013Protein & Cell2013,4,6:31

9Status monitoring and health assessment of Luhuitou fringing reef of Sanya, Hainan, China显示文摘The monitoring survey and health assessment for benthic community were carried out in Luhuitou fringing reef of Sanya, Hainan, China in 2002. Monitoring survey included manta tow, line intercept transect, video transect and digital photograph. The mean live coral cover was 23.40%. Comparison of used monitoring methods showed that video transect can replace line intercept transect, and 50 m transect is better than 20 m transect in uneven coral region. Survey data and comparison with previous research work showed that Luhuitou fringing reef has been damaged severely and has a general declining trend with live coral cover from about 85% in the 1960s down to 20% in 2004, but it still has quite high biodiversity and therefore has special protection value. Main factors of Luhuitou fringing reef declining were human activities including reef rock digging and curios collecting, destructive fishing, sediment and pollutant from coastal land, and recent marine aquaculture. 11Calcium phosphate cements for bone engineering and their biological properties显示文摘Calcium phosphate cements(CPCs) are frequently used to repair bone defects. Since their discovery in the 1980 s, extensive research has been conducted to improve their properties, and emerging evidence supports their increased application in bone tissue engineering. Much effort has been made to enhance the biological performance of CPCs, including their biocompatibility, osteoconductivity, osteoinductivity, biodegradability,bioactivity, and interactions with cells. 12Influence of Garlic Intercropping or Active Emitted Volatiles in Releasers on Aphid and Related Beneficial in Wheat Fields in China显示文摘In order to develop biological control of aphids by a 'push-pull'approach, intercropping using repellent emitting plants was developed in different crop and associated plant models. Garlic is one of the potential plant that could be inserted in crops to decrease the pest occurrence in neighboring crop plots. In this study, field works were conducted in wheat fields in Langfang Experimental Station, Hebei Province in China from October 2009 to July 2010 during wheat developmental season. The effect of wheat intercropping with garlic but also the volatiles emission on the incidence of the English grain aphid, Sitobion avenae Fabricius (Homoptera: Aphididae) was assessed. Natural beneficial occurrence and global yields in two winter wheat varieties that were susceptible or resistant to cereal aphid were also determined comparing to control plots without the use of garlic plant intercrop nor semiochemical releaser in the fields. S. avenae was found to be lower in garlic oil blend treatment (GOB), diallyl disulfide treatment (DD) and wheat-garlic intercropping treatment (WGI) when compared to the control plots for both two varieties (P<0.01). Both intercropping and application of volatile chemicals emitted by garlic could improve the population densities of natural enemies of cereal aphid, including ladybeetles and mummified aphids. Ladybeetle population density in WGI, GOB and mummified aphids densities in WGI, DD were significantly higher than those in control fields for both two varieties (P<0.05). There were significant interactions between cultivars and treatments to the population densities of S. avenae. The 1 000-grain weight and yield of wheat were also increased compared to the control. 17Personalized targeted therapy for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma显示文摘Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma continues to heavily burden clinicians worldwide. Researchers have discovered the genomic landscape of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, which holds promise for an era of personalized oncology care. One of the most pressing problems facing this issue is to improve the understanding of the newly available genomic data, and identify the driver-gene mutations, pathways, and networks. The emergence of a legion of novel targeted agents has generated much hope and hype regarding more potent treatment regimens, but the accuracy of drug selection is still arguable. Other problems, such as cancer heterogeneity, drug resistance, exceptional responders, and side effects, have to be surmounted. 18A STUDY OF STRUCTURE AND PROPERTY CHANGES OF BIODEGRADABLE POLYGLYCOLIDE AND POLY(GLYCOLIDE-co-LACTIDE)FIBERS DURING PROCESSING AND IN VITRO DEGRADATION显示文摘Structure and properties of bioabsorbable polyglycolide (PGA) and poly(glycolide-co-lactide) (PGA-co-PLA)fibers were investigated during several industrial processing stages and in vitro degradation by means of wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and mechanical property tests. In the orientation stage, the PGA fibers were found to have higher degrees of crystallinity than corresponding PGA-co-PLA samples produced under similar conditions. In the hot-stretching and post-annealing stages, after fibers were braided, PGA samples were found to gain more crystallinity and higher Tg than PGA-co-PLA samples. The higher crystallinity in PGA fibers resulted in a slower rate of degradation. DMA results showed that a great deal of internal stress that was built during orientation and hot-stretching stages was released in the post-annealing stage for all PGA and PGA-co-PLA samples. During earlier stages ofin vitro degradation, both PGA and PGA-co-PLA samples exhibited the typical cleavage-induced crystallization mechanism.
