| 2 | Effect of acupotomy on nitric oxide synthase and beta-endorphin in third lumbar vertebrae transverse process syndrome model rats显示文摘OBJECTIVE: To explore the long-term effects and pain relief mechanism of acupotomy by observing changes in nitric oxide synthase(NOS) and beta-endorphin(β-EP) in the hypothalamus, spinal cord,and peripheral blood of rats with third lumbar vertebrae(L3) transverse process syndrome.METHODS:Twenty-eight SD rats were randomly assigned to normal, model, electroacupuncture(EA),and acupotomy group. The last three groups were put through an operation to emulate L3transverse process syndrome. Fourteen days after the simulation operation, EA and acupotomy treatments were applied to the respective groups. Fifty-six days afterthe simulation operation, biochemistry tests and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay were used to measure NOS and β-EP in the hypothalamus, spinal cord, and peripheral blood.RESULTS: Rats with the simulation operation showed significantly higher levels of NOS and β-EP in the hypothalamus, spinal cord, and peripheral blood than those in the normal group. | 3 | The impacts of conservation agriculture on crop yield in China depend on specific practices, crops and cropping regions显示文摘For smooth and wide application of conservation agriculture(CA), remaining uncertainties about its impacts on crop yield need to be reduced. Based on previous field experiments in China, a meta-analysis was performed to quantify the actual impacts of CA practices(NT: no/reduced-tillage only, CTSR: conventional tillage with straw retention, NTSR: NT with straw retention) on crop yields as compared to conventional tillage without straw retention(CT).Although CA practices increased crop yield by 4.6% on average, there were large variations in their impacts. For each CA practice, CTSR and NTSR significantly increased crop yield by 4.9%and 6.3%, respectively, compared to CT. However, no significant effect was found for NT. Among ecological areas, significant positive effects of CA practices were found in areas with an annual precipitation below 600 mm. Similar effects were found in areas with annual mean air temperature above 5 °C. For cropping regions, CA increased crop yield by 6.4% and 5.5%compared to CT in Northwest and South China, respectively, whereas no significant effects were found in the North China and Northeast China regions. Among crops, the positive effects of CA practices were significantly higher in maize(7.5%) and rice(4.1%) than in wheat(2.9%). NT likely decreased wheat yield. Our results indicate that there are great differences in the impacts of CA practices on crop yield, owing to regional variation in climate and crop types. CA will most likely increase maize yield but reduce wheat yield. The coral reef has been well studied and some significant characteristics were dis-covered: the composition of reef-building community is very monotonous; there are only one or two builders in each reef-building stage; the dwellers are also poor in variety; the reef-building process is very simple; the reef has been separately built by various reef-building mechanisms, and there have been few parts built by two coexisting building mechanisms; the process of reef building is often discontinuous and lacks transition. | 5 | Metamorphism of the northern Liaoning Complex:Implications for the tectonic evolution of Neoarchean basement of the Eastern Block,North China Craton显示文摘As one of the areas where typical late Archean crust is exposed in the Eastern Block of the North China Craton,the northern Laioning Complex consists principally of tonalitic-trondhjemitic-granodioritic(TTG) gneisses,massive granitoids and supracrustal rocks.The supracrustal rocks,named the Qingyuan Group, consist of interbedded amphibolite,hornblende granulite,biotite granulite and B1F.Petrological evidence indicates that the amphibolites experienced the early prograde(M1),peak(M2) and post-peak(M3) metamorphism.The early prograde assemblage(M1) is preserved as mineral inclusions,represented by actinotite + hornblende + plagioclase + epidote + quartz + sphene,within garnet porphyroblasts.The peak assemblage(M2) is indicated by garnet + clinopyroxene + hornblende + plagioclase + quartz + ilmenite, which occur as major mineral phases in the rock.The post-peak assemblage(M3) is characterized by the garnet + quartz symplectite.The P—T pseudosections in the NCFMASHTO system constructed by using THERMOCALC define the P-T conditions of Ml,M2 and M3 at 490-550℃/<4.5 kbar,780-810℃/7.65- 8.40 kbar and 630-670℃/8.15-9.40 kbar,respectively.As a result,an anticlockwise P-T path involving isobaric cooling is inferred for the metamorphic evolution of the amphibolites.Such a P-T path suggests that the late Archean metamorphism of the northern Liaoning Complex was related to the intrusion and underplating of mantle-derived magmas.The underplating of voluminous mantle-derived magmas leading to metamorphism with an anticlockwise P-T path involving isobaric cooling may have occurred in continental magmatic arc regions,above hot spots driven by mantle plumes,or in continental rift environments. | 8 | Geological Characteristics and Ore-controlling Factors of the Beiya Gold–Polymetallic Ore Deposit, Northwestern Yunnan Province显示文摘Based on comprehensive petrological, geochronological, and geochemical studies, this study analyzed the relationships between the Beiya gold-polymetallic skarn deposit and quartz syenite porphyries, and discussed the source(s) and evolution of magmas. Our results suggest that syenite porphyries(i.e. the Wandongshan, the Dashadi, and the Hongnitang porphyries), which formed between the Eocene and the early Oligocene epochs, are the sources for the gold-polymetallic ores at the Beiya deposit. Carbonate rocks(T2 b) of the Triassic Beiya Formation in the ore district provide favorable host space for deposit formation. Fold and fault structures collectively play an important role in ore formation. The contact zone between the porphyries and carbonates, the structurally fractured zone of carbonate and clastic rocks, and the zone with well-developed fractures are the ideal locations for ore bodies. Four types of mineralization have been recognized: 1) porphyry-style stockwork gold–iron(copper) ore, 2) skarn-style gold-iron(copper and lead) ore in the near contact zone, 3) strata-bound, lense-type lead–silver–gold ore in the outer contact zone, and 4) distal vein-type gold–lead–silver ore. Supergene processes led to the formation of oxide ore, such as the weathered and accumulated gold–iron ore, the strata-bound fracture oxide ore, and the structure-controlled vein-type ore. Most of these ore deposits are distributed along the axis of the depressed basin, with the hypogene ore controlling the shape and characteristics of the oxide ore. | 9 | A fundamental theorem for eco-environmental surface modelling and its applications显示文摘We propose a fundamental theorem for eco-environmental surface modelling(FTEEM) in order to apply it into the fields of ecology and environmental science more easily after the fundamental theorem for Earth’s surface system modeling(FTESM). The Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei(BTH) region is taken as a case area to conduct empirical studies of algorithms for spatial upscaling, spatial downscaling, spatial interpolation, data fusion and model-data assimilation, which are based on high accuracy surface modelling(HASM), corresponding with corollaries of FTEEM. The case studies demonstrate how eco-environmental surface modelling is substantially improved when both extrinsic and intrinsic information are used along with an appropriate method of HASM. Compared with classic algorithms, the HASM-based algorithm for spatial upscaling reduced the root-meansquare error of the BTH elevation surface by 9 m. The HASM-based algorithm for spatial downscaling reduced the relative error of future scenarios of annual mean temperature by 16%. The HASM-based algorithm for spatial interpolation reduced the relative error of change trend of annual mean precipitation by 0.2%. The HASM-based algorithm for data fusion reduced the relative error of change trend of annual mean temperature by 70%. The HASM-based algorithm for model-data assimilation reduced the relative error of carbon stocks by 40%. | 10 | Paleoenvironmental information recorded by pollen in B-3GC gravity core in Okinawa Trough显示文摘Based on pollen records in B-3GC gravity core, environmental change since 9500 aBP of Okinawa Trough and its adjacent islands was derived. The result showed that the most time during this period was in a warm temperate climate except in middle Holocene (6800-4400 aBP) that was under subtropical climate control. During 9500-8300 aBP and 3100-2000 aBP periods, it appeared colder and drier than the rest time. The original area of pollen sources surrounding Okinawa Trough was covered by evergreen and deciduous broadleaf forest alternatively with mixed broad-leaf-conifer forest distributed in high mountainous areas. Usually, these three kinds of forests existed at the same time with difference in altitude. Pollen from subtropical and tropical plants increased obviously in about 5000-6000 aBP, reflecting a great lifting of vegetation zone and expansion of evergreen broad-leaf forest in the study area. | 12 | Effect of rifampicin pre-and post-treatment on rotenone-induced dopaminergic neuronal apoptosis and alpha-synuclein expression显示文摘BACKGROUND: Rifampicin inhibits the formation of α-synuclein multimer and protects against 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyritine (MPTP)-induced PC12 cell apoptosis.OBJECTIVE: To compare the effect of rifampicin pre-and post-treatment on tyrosine hydroxylase and α-synuclein expression in substantia nigra pars compacta in a rat model of Parkinson’s disease.DESIGN,TIME AND SETTING: A randomized,controlled experiment was performed at the Experimental Animal Center of Sun Yat-sen University North Campus (China) from November 2006 to October 2008.MATERIALS: Rifampicin was purchased from MD,USA;rotenone was purchased from Sigma,USA;mouse anti-rat α-synuclein monoclonal antibody was purchased from B&D,USA;and rabbit anti-rat tyrosine hydroxylase monoclonal antibody was purchased from Chemicon,USA.METHODS: A total of 72 male,Sprague Dawley rats,aged 8 weeks,were randomly assigned to 5 groups: blank control (n = 12),rifampicin (n = 12),rotenone (n = 16),rifampicin pre-treatment (n = 16),and rifampicin post-treatment (n = 16).Parkinson’s disease model rats were established via a subcutaneous injection of rotenone (1.5 mg/kg per day) in the three treatment groups,once a day for 3 successive weeks.Rifampicin (30 mg/kg per day) was intragastrically administered in the rifampicin pre-treatment group 3 days prior to rotenone induction and in the rifampicin post-treatment group 7 days after rotenone induction.Rats were treated with a subcutaneous injection of 1 mL/kg per day sunflower oil in the blank control group and an intragastric injection of 30 mg/kg per day rifampicin in the rifampicin group,once a day for 3 successive weeks in total.MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Prior to treatment and in the end of the 3rd week after treatment,the rats were evaluated using the modified neurological severity score.The substantia nigra from the rats was extracted for hematoxylin-eosin staining.Western blot analysis was performed to determine tyrosine hydroxylase and α-synuclein expression.RESULTS: Hematoxylin-eosin staining revealed a significant reduction in the number of substantia nigral neurons in the rotenone group,in addition to neurodegradation,hypopigmentation,and pyknosis.In the rifampicin pre-treatment and post-treatment groups,the number of dopaminergic neurons was significantly increased compared with the rotenone group (P < 0.01),with slight neuronal damage.Compared with the rotenone group,substantia nigral tyrosine hydroxylase expres-sion was significantly increased in the rifampicin pre-treatment and post-treatment groups (P < 0.01),but α-synuclein expression and modified neurological severity scores were significantly decreased (P < 0.01).In addition,the effect of rifampicin in the pre-treatment group was superior to the post-treatment group.There was no significant difference in tyrosine hydroxylase and α-synuclein expression,or in the modified neurological severity scores,between the blank control and rifampicin groups (P > 0.05).CONCLUSION: Rifampicin significantly attenuated neuropathological and behavioral motor deficits induced by rotenone.Moreover,rifampicin enhanced tyrosine hydroxylase expression,but inhibited α-synuclein expression.The effect of rifampicin pre-treatment was superior to rifampicin post-treatment. | Yuanlin Sun Guohua Zhang Jie Xu Shiwen Chen Enxiang Tao Changqing Xu M. | 14 | Autologous fibroblasts induce fibrosis of the nucleus pulposus to maintain the stability of degenerative intervertebral discs显示文摘Lumbar degenerative disc diseases cause low back pain(LBP). The maintenance of the height and stability of the intervertebral disc(IVD) space is an effective treatment for LBP. The following study evaluated the effects of fibroblast injection on intervertebral disc degeneration(IDD) in a preclinical setting. Compared with the IDD group, the fibroblast treatment group demonstrated effective maintenance of IVD height, reduced endplate degeneration, and improved nuclear magnetic resonance signals and overall histological structure. In doing so, fibrotic IVDs maintained the stability and biomechanics of the vertebra. This finding is in agreement with clinical findings that human nucleus pulposus(NP) fibrosis is essential for the maintenance of IVD height and mechanical properties in patients following percutaneous endoscopic lumbar discectomy(PELD). Mechanistically, we demonstrated that injected fibroblasts not only proliferated but also induced NP cells to adopt a fibrotic phenotype via the secretion of TGF-β.Finally, to better mimic human conditions, the efficacy of autologous fibroblast injection in the treatment of IDD was further examined in a nonhuman primate cynomolgus monkey model due to their capacity for upright posture. We showed that the injection of fibroblasts could maintain the IVD height and rescue IVD signals in cynomolgus monkeys. Taken together, the results of our study reveal that autologous fibroblast injection can enhance the natural process of fibrosis during acute and subacute stages of stress-induced IDD. The tensile mechanical properties and electric conductivity of the studied alloys under different treatment conditions were tested. The results show that adding minor Sc can greatly fines the grain size of the Al-Zn-Mg-Cu-Zr alloy ingots and obviously improves the tensile properties and electric conductivity of the alloys. The strengthening mechanism is considered as fine grain strengthening, sub-structure strengthening and dispersion strengthening by Al3(Sc, Zr). | 17 | Impact of Droughts on Winter Wheat Yield in Different Growth Stages during 2001–2016 in Eastern China显示文摘Remote sensing can provide near real-time and dynamic monitoring of drought. The drought severity index(DSI), based on the normalized difference vegetation index(NDVI) and evapotranspiration/potential evapotranspiration(ET/PET), has been used for drought monitoring. This study examined the relationship between the DSI and winter wheat yield for prefecture-level cities in five provinces of eastern China during 2001–2016. We first analyzed the spatial and temporal distribution of droughts in the study area. Then the correlation coefficient between drought-affected area and detrended yield of winter wheat was quantified and the impact of droughts of different intensities on winter wheat yield during different growth stages was investigated. The results show that incipient drought during the wintering period has no significant impact on the yield of winter wheat, while moderate drought in the same period can reduce yield. Drought affects winter wheat yield significantly during the flowering and filling stages. Droughts of higher intensity have more significant negative effects on the yield of winter wheat. Monitoring of droughts and irrigation is critical during these periods to ensure normal yield of winter wheat.
