1Calcium dobesilate for diabetic retinopathy: a systematic review and meta-analysis显示文摘Many randomized clinical controlled trials have confirmed the efficacy and safety of calcium dobesilate in treating diabetic retinopathy(DR).This systematic review critically evaluated the evidence that links calcium dobesilate to DR.In this fixed-effects meta-analysis,a total of 221 pertinent English-language articles published between January 1975 and October 2013 were identified.Systematic searches of PUBMED,Springer Link and the Cochrane Clinical Trials Database were conducted using the keywords 'diabetic retinopathy' and 'calcium dobesilate'.The extracted information included the study design,inclusion and exclusion criteria,setting,sample size,participant mean age,treatment regime,mean change in best corrected visual acuity,laboratory parameters,capillary fragility,intraocular pressure and fundus manifestations based on the findings of fluorescent angiography.The summary statistics indicated that calcium dobesilate was significantly associated with improving retinal microaneurysms(RR: 0.62,95%CI: 0.42?0.90,P=0.01),retinalhemorrhages(RR: 0.39,95% CI: 0.17?0.88,P=0.02); exudates(RR: 0.31,95% CI: 0.12?0.81,P=0.02),reduction of whole blood viscosity(MD: ?0.57 CP,95% CI: ?0.75 to ?0.38,P<0.001),plasma viscosity(MD: ?0.36 CP,95% CI: ?0.63 to ?0.09,P=0.01) and blood cholesterol(MD: ?0.48 mg m L?1,95% CI: ?0.64?0.33,P<0.00001).Intraocular pressure was also significantly reduced(MD: ?5.59 mm Hg,95% CI: ?6.69 to ?4.50,P<0.00001).The results indicate that calcium dobesilate effectively treats DR at the systematic and local ocular levels.ZHANG XinYuan LIU Wei WU ShanShan JIN JingLong LI WeiHong Wang NingLi 2015Science China(Life Sciences)2015,58,1:54

4Weekly albumin-bound paclitaxel/cisplatin versus gemcitabine/cisplatin as first-line therapy for patients with advanced non-small-cell lung cancer:A phase II open-label clinical study显示文摘Objective: The aim of this trial was to compare both the efficacy and the safety of a weekly nanoparticle albumin-bound paclitaxel(nab-paclitaxel) plus cisplatin vs. gemcitabine plus cisplatin in patients with advanced non-small-cell lung cancer(NSCLC).Methods: A total of 84 participants received either 100 mg/m^2 nab-paclitaxel each week on d 1, 8 and 15 of a 28 day cycle, as well as cisplatin 75 mg/m^2 on d 1 every three weeks(nab-TP arm); or gemcitabine 1,000 mg/m^2 on d 1 and 8, plus cisplatin 75 mg/m^2 on d 1 every three weeks(GP arm). The primary end point was progression-free survival(PFS). The secondary end points were overall response rate(ORR) and overall survival(OS).Results: According to our analysis, the median PFS was 4.8 months for the nab-TP arm vs. 5.2 months for the GP arm(P=0.55). Analysis showed the median OS was 14.6 months for participants who were in the nab-TP arm vs. 15.1 months for those in the GP arm(P=0.94). Besides, nab-TP showed OS advantages over GP in patients harboring epidermal growth factor receptor(EGFR) mutation(26.7 vs. 15.3 months, P=0.046) and patients with a performance status of 0(23.5 vs. 14.7 months, P=0.020). It was found that incidences of drug-related grade 3 or 4 toxicities were comparable between the two treatment arms.Conclusions: Therefore, it can be seen that weekly nab-TP treatment has a similar efficacy and tolerability to GP treatment for patients who are undergoing their first-line treatment for NSCLC. 5Ultrasound-triggered noninvasive regulation of blood glucose levels using microgels integrated with insulin nanocapsules显示文摘Diabetes is a serious public health problem affecting 422 million people worldwide. Traditional diabetes management often requires multiple daily insulin injections, associated with pain and inadequate glycemia control. Herein, we have developed an ultrasound-triggered insulin delivery system capable of pulsatile insulin release that can provide both long-term sustained and fast on-demand responses. In this system, insulin-loaded poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) nanocapsules are encapsulated within chitosan microgels. The encapsulated insulin in nanocapsules can passively diffuse from the nanoparticle but remain restricted within the microgel. Upon ultrasound treatment, the stored insulin in microgels can be rapidly released to regulate blood glucose levels. 6Macrophage-derived small extracellular vesicles promote biomimetic mineralized collagen-mediated endogenous bone regeneration显示文摘Macrophages play an important role in material-related immune responses and bone formation,but the functionality of macrophage-derived extracellular vesicles(EVs)in material-mediated bone regeneration is still unclear.Here,we evaluated intracellular communication through small extracellular vesicles(sEVs)and its effects on endogenous bone regeneration mediated by biomimetic intrafibrillarly mineralized collagen(IMC).After implantation in the bone defect area,IMC generated more neobone and recruited more mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs)than did extrafibrillarly mineralized collagen(EMC).More CD63+CD90+and CD63+CD163+cells were detected in the defect area in the IMC group than in the EMC group.To determine the functional roles of sEVs,extracellular vesicles from macrophages cultured on different mineralized collagen were isolated,and they showed no morphological differences.However,macrophage-derived sEVs in the IMC group showed an enhanced Young’s modulus and exerted beneficial effects on the osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow MSCs by increasing the expression of the osteoblastic differentiation markers BMP2,BGLAP,COL1,and OSX and calcium nodule formation.Mechanistically,sEVs from IMC-treated macrophages facilitated MSC osteogenesis through the BMP2/Smad5 pathway,and blocking sEV secretion with GW4869 significantly impaired MSC proliferative,immunomodulative and osteogenic potential.Taken together,these findings show that macrophage-derived sEVs may serve as an emerging functional tool in biomaterial-mediated endogenous bone regeneration.Anqi Liu Shanshan Jin Cuicui Fu Shengji Cui Ting Zhang Lisha Zhu Yu Wang Steve G.F.Shen Nan Jiang Yan Liu 2020International Journal of Oral Science2020,12,4:5
73D-printed controllable gradient pore superwetting structures for high temperature efficient oil-water separation显示文摘Superwetting surfaces have the potential to address oil pollution in water,through their ability to separate the two.However,it remains a great challenge to fabricate stable and efficient separation structures using conventional manufacturing techniques.Furthermore,the materials traditionally used for oil-water separation are not stable at high temperature.Therefore,there is a need to develop stable,customizable structures to improve the performance of oil-water separation devices.In recent years,3D printing technology has developed rapidly,and breakthroughs have been made in the fabrication of complicated ceramic structures using this technology.Here,a ceramic material with a gradient pore structure and superhydrophobic/superoleophilic properties was prepared using 3D printing for high-efficiency oil-water separation.The gradient pore structure developed here can support a flux of up to 25434 L/m^(2)h,which is nearly 40%higher than that an analogous structure with straight pores.At 200℃,the oil-water separation performance was maintained at 97.4%.Furthermore,samples of the material exhibited outstanding mechanical properties,and chemical stability in a variety of harsh environments.This study provides an efficient,simple,and reliable method for manufacturing oil-water separation materials using 3D printing,and may have broader implications for both fundamental research and industrial applications.Zhipeng Jin Hui Mei Yuekai Yan Longkai Pan Hongxia Liu Shanshan Xiao Laifei Cheng 2021Journal of Materiomics2021,7,1:4

9A novel graphene oxide-carbon nanotubes anchored α-FeOOH hybrid activated persulfate system for enhanced degradation of Orange Ⅱ显示文摘Persulfate activation has been applied as one of the efficient advanced oxidation processes(AOPs) to remediate polluted environments. In this study, a novel α-FeOOH anchored by graphene oxide(GO)-carbon nanotubes(CNTs) aerogel(α-FeOOH@GCA) nanocomposite activated persulfate system(α-FeOOH@GCA + K2S2O8) was applied for decolorization of Orange Ⅱ(OⅡ). The decolorization of OⅡ was remarkably enhanced to a level of ~ 99% in this system compared with that of pristine α-FeOOH(~ 44%) or GO-CNTs(~18%). The enhanced catalytic activity of α-FeOOH@GCA was due to the formation of a heterojunction byα-FeOOH and GO-CNTs as confirmed by the presence of Fe–O–C chemical bonds. The degradation intermediates of OⅡ were comprehensively identified. The proposed degradation pathway of OⅡ begins with the destruction of the conjugated structures of OⅡ by the dominant reactive oxygen species, surface-bound SO4·-. The decolorization efficiency of OⅡ by the α-FeOOH@GCA activated persulfate system decreased from the first to third cycle of recycling. Ultraviolet(UV) irradiation or introduction of a small amount of Fe2+ could restore the activation of this system. 10A high-quality reference genome of wild Cannabis sativa显示文摘Cannabis sativa is a well-known plant species that has great economic and ecological significance.An incomplete genome of cloned C.sativa was obtained by using SOAPdenovo software in 2011.To further explore the utilization of this plant resource,we generated an updated draft genome sequence for wild-type varieties of C.sativa in China using PacBio single-molecule sequencing and Hi-C technology.Our assembled genome is approximately 808 Mb,with scaffold and contig N50 sizes of 83.00 Mb and 513.57 kb,respectively.Repetitive elements account for 74.75%of the genome.A total of 38,828 protein-coding genes were annotated,98.20%of which were functionally annotated.We provide the first comprehensive de novo genome of wild-type varieties of C.sativa distributed in Tibet,China.Due to long-term growth in the wild environment,these varieties exhibit higher heterozygosity and contain more genetic information.This genetic resource is of great value for future investigations of cannabinoid metabolic pathways and will aid in promoting the commercial production of C.sativa and the effective utilization of cannabinoids.The assembled genome is also a valuable resource for intensively and effectively investigating the C.sativa genome further in the future.Shan Gao Baishi Wang Shanshan Xie Xiaoyu Xu Jin Zhang Li Pei Yongyi Yu Weifei Yang Ying Zhang 2020Horticulture Research2020,7,1:3
11Effect of pruning intensity on soil moisture and water use efficiency in jujube(Ziziphus jujube Mill.) plantations in the hilly Loess Plateau Region, China显示文摘Jujube(Ziziphus jujube Mill.)is a traditional economic forest crop and is widely cultivated in hilly areas of the Loess Plateau,China.However,soil desiccation was discovered in jujube plantations.Pruning is recognized as a water-saving method that can reduces soil water consumption.In this study,we monitored the jujube plots with control(CK),light(C1),medium(C2)and high(C3)pruning intensities during the jujube growing period of 2012-2015 to explore the effect of pruning intensity on soil moisture and water use efficiency(WUE)of jujube plantations in the hilly Loess Plateau Region.The results showed that pruning is an effective method for soil water conservation in jujube plantations.Soil moisture increased with increasing pruning intensity during the jujube growing period of 2012-2015.C1,C2 and C3 pruning intensities increased soil water storage by 6.1-18.3,14.4-40.0 and 24.3-63.3 mm,respectively,compared to CK pruning intensity.Pruning promoted soil moisture infiltration to deeper soil layer.Soil moisture infiltrated to soil depths of 240,280 and>300 cm under C3 pruning intensity,220,260 and 260 cm under C2 pruning intensity,200,240 and 220 cm under C1 pruning intensity,and 180,200 and 160 cm under CK pruning intensity in 2013,2014 and 2015,respectively.Soil water deficit was alleviated by higher pruning intensity.In 2013-2015,soil water change was positive under C2(6.4 mm)and C3(26.8 mm)pruning intensities but negative under C1(-20.5 mm)and CK(-40.6 mm)pruning intensities.Moreover,pruning significantly improved fresh fruit yield and WUE of jujube plants.Fresh fruit yields were highest under C1 pruning intensity with the values of 6897.1-13,059.3 kg/hm^2,which were 2758.4-4712.8,385.7-1432.1 and 802.8-2331.5 kg/hm2 higher than those under CK,C2,and C3 pruning intensities during the jujube growing period of 2012-2015,respectively.However,C3 pruning intensity had the highest WUE values of 2.92-3.13 kg/m3,which were 1.6-2.0,1.1-1.2 and 1.0-1.1 times greater than those under CK,C1 and C2 pruning intensities,respectively.Therefore,C3 pruning intensity is recommended to jujube plantations for its economic and ecological benefits.These results provide an alternative strategy to mitigate soil desiccation in jujube plantations in the hilly Loess Plateau Region,which is critical for sustainable cultivation of economic forest trees in this region.JIN Shanshan WANG Youke WANG Xing BAI Yonghong SHI Leigang 2019Journal of Arid Land2019,11,3:3

13A Virtual Machine Scheduling Strategy with a Speed Switch and a Multi-Sleep Mode in Cloud Data Centers显示文摘With the rapid growth of energy costs and the constant promotion of environmental standards, energy consumption has become a significant expenditure for the operating and maintaining of a cloud data center. Io improve the energy efficiency of cloud data centers, in this paper, we propose a Virtual Machine (VM) scheduling strategy with a speed switch and a multi-sleep mode. In accordance with the current traffic loads, a proportion of VMs operate at a low speed or a high speed, while the remaining VMs either sleep or operate at a high speed. Commensurate with our proposal, we develop a continuous-time queueing model with an adaptive service rate and a partial synchronous vacation. We construct a two dimensional Markov chain based on the total number of requests in the system and the state of all the VMs. Using a matrix geometric solution, we mathematically estimate the energy saving level and the response performance of the system. Numerical experiments with analysis and simulation show that our proposed VM scheduling strategy can effectively reduce the energy consumption without significant degradation in response performance. Additionally;we establish a system utility function to trade off the different performance measures. 14Mitochondrial transcription factor A plays opposite roles in the initiation and progression of colitis-associated cancer显示文摘Background:Mitochondria are key regulators in cell proliferation and apoptosis.Alterations in mitochondrial function are closely associated with inflammation and tumorigenesis.This study aimed to investigate whether mitochondrial transcription factor A(TFAM),a key regulator of mitochondrial DNA transcription and replication,is involved in the initiation and progression of colitis-associated cancer(CAC).Methods:TFAM expression was examined in tissue samples of inflammatory bowel diseases(IBD)and CAC by immunohistochemistry.Intestinal epithelial cell(IEC)-specific TFAM-knockout mice(TFAM^(△IEC))and colorectal cancer(CRC)cells with TFAM knockdown or overexpression were used to evaluate the role of TFAMin colitis and the initiation and progression ofCAC.The underlying mechanisms of TFAMwere also explored by analyzingmitochondrial respiration function and biogenesis.Results:The expression of TFAM was downregulated in active IBD and negatively associated with the disease activity.The downregulation of TFAM in IECs was induced by interleukin-6 in a signal transducer and activator of transcription 3(STAT3)/miR-23b-dependent manner.In addition,TFAM knockout impaired IECturnover to promote dextran sulfate sodium(DSS)-induced colitis inmice.Of note,TFAMknockout increased the susceptibility of mice to azoxymethane/DSSinduced CAC and TFAM overexpression protected mice from intestinal inflammation and colitis-associated tumorigenesis.By contrast,TFAM expression was upregulated in CAC tissues and contributed to cell growth.Furthermore,it was demonstrated that β-catenin induced the upregulation of TFAM through c-Myc in CRC cells.Mechanistically,TFAMpromoted the proliferation of both IECs and CRC cells by increasing mitochondrial biogenesis and activity.Conclusions:TFAM plays a dual role in the initiation and progression of CAC,providing a novel understanding of CAC pathogenesis.Shirong Yang Xianli He Jing Zhao Dalin Wang Shanshan Guo Tian Gao Gang Wang Chao Jin Zeyu Yan Nan Wang Yongxing Wang Yilin Zhao Jinliang Xing Qichao Huang 2021Cancer Communications2021,41,8:2
15Nonpharmaceutical interventions contribute to the control of COVID-19 in China based on a pairwise model显示文摘Nonpharmaceutical interventions(NPIs),particularly contact tracing isolation and household quarantine,play a vital role in effectively bringing the Coronavirus Disease 2019(COVID-19)under control in China.The pairwise model,has an inherent advantage in characterizing those two NPIs than the classical well-mixed models.Therefore,in this paper,we devised a pairwise epidemic model with NPIs to analyze COVID-19 outbreak in China by using confirmed cases during February 3rde22nd,2020.By explicitly incorporating contact tracing isolation and family clusters caused by household quarantine,our model provided a good fit to the trajectory of COVID-19 infections.We calculated the reproduction number R=1.345(95%CI:1.230-1.460)for Hubei province and R=1.217(95%CI:1.207-1.227)for China(except Hubei).We also estimated the peak time of infections,the epidemic duration and the final size,which are basically consistent with real observation.We indicated by simulation that the traced high-risk contacts from incubated to susceptible decrease under NPIs,regardless of infected cases.The sensitivity analysis showed that reducing the exposure of the susceptible and increasing the clustering coefficient bolster COVID-19 control.With the enforcement of household quarantine,the reproduction number R and the epidemic prevalence declined effectively.Furthermore,we obtained the resumption time of work and production in China(except Hubei)on 10th March and in Hubei at the end of April 2020,respectively,which is broadly in line with the actual time.Our results may provide some potential lessons from China on the control of COVID-19 for other parts of the world.Xiao-Feng Luo Shanshan Feng Junyuan Yang Xiao-Long Peng Xiaochun Cao Juping Zhang Meiping Yao Huaiping Zhu Michael Y.Li Hao Wang Zhen Jin 2021Infectious Disease Modelling2021,6,1:2
16Highlights of the 2nd International Symposium on Tribbles and Diseases: tribbles tremble in therapeutics for immunity, metabolism, fundamental cell biology and cancer显示文摘The Tribbles(TRIB) family of pseudokinase proteins has been shown to play key roles in cell cycle, metabolic diseases, chronic inflammatory disease, and cancer development. A better understanding of the mechanisms of TRIB pseudokinases could provide new insights for disease development and help promote TRIB proteins as novel therapeutic targets for drug discovery. At the 2 nd International Symposium on Tribbles and Diseases held on May 7–9, 2018 in Beijing, China, a group of leading Tribbles scientists reported their findings and ongoing studies about the effects of the different TRIB proteins in the areas of immunity, metabolism, fundamental cell biology and cancer. Here, we summarize important and insightful overviews from 4 keynote lectures, 13 plenary lectures and 8 short talks that took place during this meeting. 17Dew measurement and estimation of rain-fed jujube (Zizyphus jujube Mill) in a semi-arid loess hilly region of China显示文摘Dew is an important water source for plants in arid and semi-arid regions. However, information on dew is scarce in such regions. In this study, we explored dew formation, amount, and duration of rain-fed jujube(Zizyphus jujube Mill) trees in a semi-arid loess hilly region of China(i.e., Mizhi County). The data included dew intensity and duration, relative humidity, temperature, and wind speed measured from 26 July to 23 October, 2012 and from 24 June to 17 October, 2013 using a micro-climate system(including dielectric leaf wetness sensors, VP-3 Relative Humidity/Temperature Sensor, High Resolution Rain Gauge, and Davis Cup Anemometer). The results show that atmospheric conditions of relative humidity of >78% and dew point temperature of 1°C–3°C are significantly favorable to dew formation. Compared with the rainfall, dew was characterized by high frequency, strong stability, and long duration. Furthermore, heavy dew accounted for a large proportion of the total amount. The empirical models(i.e., relative humidity model(RH model) and dew point depression model(DPD model)) for daily dew duration estimation performed well at 15-min intervals, with low errors ranging between 1.29 and 1.60 h, respectively. But it should be noted that the models should be calibrated firstly by determining the optimal thresholds of relatively humidity for RH model and dew point depression for DPD model. For rain-fed jujube trees in the semi-arid loess hilly regions of China, the optimal threshold of relative humidity was 78%, and the optimal upper and lower thresholds of dew point depression were 1°C and 5°C, respectively. 18Lipocalin-2-induced proliferative endoplasmic reticulum stress participates in Kawasaki disease-related pulmonary arterial abnormalities显示文摘Clinical cases have reported pulmonary arterial structural and functional abnormalities in patients with Kawasaki disease(KD);however,the underlying mechanisms are unclear.In this study,a KD rat model was established via the intraperitoneal injection of Lactobacillus casei cell wall extract(LCWE).The results showed that pulmonary arterial functional and structural abnormalities were observed in KD rats.Furthermore,proliferative endoplasmic reticulum stress(ER stress)was observed in the pulmonary arteries of KD rats.Notably,the level of lipocalin-2(Lcn 2),a trigger factor of inflammation,was remarkably elevated in the plasma and lung tissues of KD rats;increased Lcn 2 levels following LCWE stimulation may result from polymorphonuclear neutrophils(PMNs).Correspondingly,in cultured pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells(PASMCs),Lcn 2 markedly augmented the cleavage and nuclear localization of activating transcription factor-6(ATF6),upregulated the transcription of glucose regulated protein 78(GRP78)and neurite outgrowth inhibitor(NOGO),and promoted PASMCs proliferation.However,proapoptotic C/EBP homologous protein(CHOP)and caspase 12 levels were not elevated.Treatment with 4-phenyl butyric acid(4-PBA,a specific inhibitor of ER stress)inhibited PASMCs proliferation induced by Lcn 2 and attenuated pulmonary arterial abnormalities and right ventricular hypertrophy and reduced right ventricular systolic pressure in KD rats.In conclusion,Lcn 2 remarkably facilitates proliferative ER stress in PASMCs,which probably accounts for KD-related pulmonary arterial abnormalities.Zhaoling Shi Yue Yin Chen Li Hui Ding Nan Mu Yishi Wang Shanshan Jin Heng Ma Manling Liu Jie Zhou 2021Science China(Life Sciences)2021,64,6:1
