Adsorption of heavy metal ions from aqueous solution by carboxylated cellulose nanocrystals显示文摘A novel nanoadsorbent for the removal of heavy metal ions is reported.Cotton was first hydrolyzed to obtain cellulose nanocrystals(CNCs).CNCs were then chemically modified with succinic anhydride to obtain SCNCs.The sodic nanoadsorbent(NaSCNCs) was further prepared by treatment of SCNCs with saturated NaHCO 3 aqueous solution.Batch experiments were carried out with SCNCs and NaSCNCs for the removal of Pb 2+ and Cd 2+.The effects of contact time,pH,initial adsorption concentration, coexisting ions and the regeneration performance were investigated.Kinetic studies showed that the adsorption equilibrium time of Pb 2+ and Cd 2+ was reached within 150 min on SCNCs and 5 min on NaSCNCs.The adsorption capacities of Pb 2+ and Cd 2+ on SCNCs and NaSCNCs increased with increasing pH.The adsorption isotherm was well fitted by the Langmuir model. The maximum adsorption capacities of SCNCs and NaSCNCs for Pb 2+ and Cd 2+ were 367.6 mg/g,259.7 mg/g and 465.1 mg/g,344.8 mg/g,respectively.SCNCs and NaSCNCs showed high selectivity and interference resistance from coexisting ions for the adsorption of Pb 2+.NaSCNCs could be efficiently regenerated with a mild saturated NaCl solution with no loss of capacity after two recycles. The adsorption mechanisms of SCNCs and NaSCNCs were discussed. | Xiaolin Yu Shengrui Tong Maofa Ge Lingyan Wu Junchao Zuo Changyan Cao Weiguo Song | 2013 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2013,25,5: | 29
Antidiabetic Effects of Gegen Qinlian Decoction via the Gut Microbiota Are Attributable to Its Key Ingredient Berberine显示文摘Gegen Qinlian Decoction(GQD),a traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)formula, has long been used for the treatment of common metabolic diseases, including type 2 diabetes mellitus. However, the main limitation of its wider application is ingredient complexity of this formula. Thus,it is critically important to identify the major active ingredients of GQD and to illustrate mechanisms underlying its action. Here,we compared the effects of GQD and berberine,a hypothetical key active pharmaceutical ingredient of GQD,on a diabetic rat model by comprehensive analyses of gut microbiota,short-chain fatty acids, proinflammatory cytokines, and ileum transcriptomics. Our results show that berberine and GQD had similar effects on lowering blood glucose levels, modulating gut microbiota, inducing ileal gene expression,as well as relieving systemic and local inflammation. As expected, both berberine and GQD treatment significantly altered the overall gut microbiota structure and enriched many butyrate-producing bacteria, including Faecalibacterium and Roseburia, thereby attenuating intestinal inflammation and lowering glucose.Levels of short-chain fatty acids in rat feces were also significantly elevated after treatment with berberine or GQD.Moreover, concentration of serum proinflammatory cytokines and expression of immune-related genes, including Nfkb1,Stat1,and Ifnrg1,in pancreatic islets were significantly reduced after treatment. Our study demonstrates that the main effects of GQD can be attributed to berberine via modulating gut microbiota. The strategy employed would facilitate further standardization and widespread application of TCM in many diseases. | Xizhan Xu Zezheng Gao Fuquan Yang Yingying Yang Liang Chen Lin Han Na Zhao Jiayue Xu Xinmiao Wang Yue Ma Lian Shu Xiaoxi Hu Na Lyu Yuanlong Pan Baoli Zhu Linhua Zhao Xiaolin Tong Jun Wang | 2020 | Genomics, Proteomics & Bioinformatics2020,18,6: | 29
Endovascular stent-induced alterations in host artery mechanical environments and their roles in stent restenosis and late thrombosis显示文摘Cardiovascular stent restenosis remains a major challenge in interventional treatment of cardiovascular occlusive disease.Although the changes in arterial mechanical environment due to stent implantation are the main causes of the initiation of restenosis and thrombosis, the mechanisms that cause this initiation are still not fully understood. In this article,we reviewed the studies on the issue of stent-induced alterations in arterial mechanical environment and discussed their roles in stent restenosis and late thrombosis from three aspects:(i)the interaction of the stent with host blood vessel, involve the response of vascular wall, the mechanism of mechanical signal transmission, the process of re-endothelialization and late thrombosis;(ii)the changes of hemodynamics in the lumen of the vascular segment and(iii)the changes of mechanical microenvironment within the vascular segment wall due to stent implantation. This review has summarized and analyzed current work in order to better solve the two main problems after stent implantation, namely in stent restenosis and late thrombosis, meanwhile propose the deficiencies of current work for future reference. | Jinxuan Wang Xuepu Jin Yuhua Huang Xiaolin Ran Desha Luo Dongchuan Yang Dongyu Jia Kang Zhang Jianhua Tong Xiaoyan Deng Guixue Wang | 2018 | Regenerative Biomaterials2018,5,3: | 13
Retrospective study of Traditional Chinese Medicine treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus显示文摘OBJECTIVE: To provide clinical evidence in support of Dahuang Huanglian Xiexin decoction(DHXD) to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM) and to introduce a new treatment option for clinicians.METHODS: Retrospective analysis was used to evaluate DHXD for the treatment of T2DM by analyzing clinical records of 183 cases. Patients with T2DM who met the inclusion criteria between January 1,2013 and January 1, 2014 were enrolled. The effects of the treatment were evaluated by the changes in fasting blood-glucose(FBG), postprandial blood sugar(PBG), hemoglobin A1c(Hb Alc), blood lipid profiles and body mass index(BMI) at 1, 2, 3 and 6 months. The changes in main symptoms were alsoevaluated. The dosage of Huanglian(Rhizoma Coptidis) and related factors were analyzed.RESULTS: There was a significant improvement in mean Hb A1C at 3 and 6 months after DHXD treatment compared with the baseline level(P < 0.01).There were also significant improvements in FBG,PBG, blood lipid series and BMI. DHXD also improved the main symptoms of stomach and intestine excessive heat syndrome in patients with obese T2DM. Huanglian(Rhizoma Coptidis) was the most frequently used in 678 clinical visits, the dosage of Huanglian(Rhizoma Coptidis) was related to age, BMI, DM duration, the level of blood glucose, and use of Western hypoglycemic drugs.CONCLUSION: This study suggests that DHXD could decrease blood glucose and improve T2DM symptoms and reduce body weight. The use of DHXD may indicate a new optional treatment for T2 DM. | Pang Bing Guo Jing Zhao Linhua Zhao Xiyan Zhou Qiang Tong Xiaolin | 2016 | Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine2016,36,3: | 11
Chinese herbal medicine reduces mortality in patients with severe and critical coronavirus disease 2019: a retrospective cohort study显示文摘This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of Chinese herbal medicine(CHM)in patients with severe/critical coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19).In this retrospective study, data were collected from 662 patients with severe/critical COVID-19 who were admitted to a designated hospital to treat patients with severe COVID-19 in Wuhan before March 20,2020.All patients were divided into an exposed group(CHM users)and a control group(non-users).After propensity score matching in a 1:1 ratio,156 CHM users were matched by propensity score to 156 non-users.No significant differences in seven baseline clinical variables were found between the two groups of patients.All-cause mortality was reported in 13 CHM users who died and 36 non-users who died. After multivariate adjustment, the mortality risk of CHM users was reduced by 82.2%(odds ratio 0.178,95%CI 0.076–0.418;P<0.001)compared with the non-users.Secondly,age(odds ratio 1.053,95%CI 1.023–1.084;P<0.001)and the proportion of severe/critical patients(odds ratio 0.063,95%CI 0.028–0.143;P<0.001)were the risk factors of mortality. These results show that the use of CHM may reduce the mortality of patients with severe/critical COVID-19. | Guohua Chen Wen Su Jiayao Yang Dan Luo Ping Xia Wen Jia Xiuyang Li Chuan Wang Suping Lang Qingbin Meng Ying Zhang Yuhe Ke An Fan Shuo Yang Yujiao Zheng Xuepeng Fan Jie Qiao Fengmei Lian Li Wei Xiaolin Tong | 2020 | Frontiers of Medicine2020,14,6: | 10
The role played by traditional Chinese medicine in preventing and treating COVID-19 in China显示文摘Traditional Chinese medicine(TCM),an ancient system of alternative medicine, played an active role in the prevention and control of COVID-19 in China. It improved the clinical symptoms of patients, reduced the mortality rate, improved the recovery rate, and effectively relieved the operating pressure on the national medical system during critical conditions. In light of the current global pandemic,TCM-related measures might open up a new channel in the control of COVID-19 in other countries and regions. Here,we summarize the TCM-related measures that were widely used in China, including TCM guidelines, the Wuchang pattern, mobile cabin hospitals, integrated treatment of TCM and modern medicine for critical patients, and non-medicine therapy for convalescent patients, and describe how TCM effectively treated patients afflicted with the COVID-19.Effective TCM therapies could, therefore,be recommended and practiced based on the existing medical evidence from increased scientific studies. | Qingwei Li Han Wang Xiuyang Li Yujiao Zheng Yu Wei Pei Zhang Qiyou Ding Jiaran Lin Shuang Tang Yikun Zhao Linhua Zhao Xiaolin Tong | 2020 | Frontiers of Medicine2020,14,5: | 10

A nanocleaner specifically penetrates the blood-brain barrier at lesions to clean toxic proteins and regulate inflammation in Alzheimer's disease显示文摘Insurmountable blood-brain barrier(BBB) and complex pathological features are the key factors affecting the treatment of Alzheimer's disease(AD).Poor accumulation of drugs in lesion sites and undesired effectiveness of simply reducing Aβ deposition or TAU protein need to be resolved urgently.Herein,a nanocleaner is designed with a rapamycin-loaded ROS-responsive PLGA core and surface modification with KLVFF peptide and acid-cleavable DAG peptide [R@(ox-PLGA)-KcD].DAG can enhance the targeting and internalization effect of nanocleaner towards neurovascular unit endothelial cells in AD lesions, and subsequently detach from nanocleaner in response to acidic microenvironment of endosomes to promote the transcytosis of nanocleaner from endothelial cells into brain parenchyma. Then exposed KLVFF can capture and carry Aβ to microglia, attenuating Aβ-induced neurotoxicity.Strikingly, rapamycin,an autophagy promoter,is rapidly liberated from nanocleaner in the high ROS level of lesions to improve Aβ degradation and normalize inflammatory condition. This design altogether accelerates Aβ degradation and alleviates oxidative stress and excessive inflammatory response.Collectively, our finding offers a strategy to target the AD lesions precisely and multi-pronged therapies for clearing the toxic proteins and modulating lesion microenvironment,to achieve efficient AD therapy. | Ting Lei Zhihang Yang Xue Xia Yuxiu Chen Xiaotong Yang Rou Xie Fan Tong Xiaolin Wang Huile Gao | 2021 | Acta Pharmaceutica Sinica B2021,11,12: | 4

Successful treatment of latent autoimmune diabetes in adults with Traditional Chinese Medicine: a case report显示文摘INTRODUCTION: Latent autoimmune diabetes in adults(LADA) is regarded as one of the Insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus that progress slowly. It gradually became understood since 1970s. The onset usually appears in adulthood, the islet autoantibodies are positive and the function of β cell is declined rapidly. The treatment is insulin injection. CASE PRESENTATION: The case reported followed is a 37-year-old male patient who was newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. He abandoned oral hypoglycemic agents since they caused stomach indisposed. Before visiting, his islet autoantibodies were detected positive and he had never injected insulin before. We treated him with traditional Chinese herbals under the guidance of Traditional Chinese Medicine and differentiation, and achieved fine efficacy. CONCLUSION: Because the initial presentation of LADA is similar to Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and examination is not in common use, misdiagnosis is not rare. Once LADA is diagnosed, the therapy must be adjusted. This case report indicated that Traditional Chinese Medicine might be an alternative treatment for LADA. | Jiaxing Tian Wenke Liu Zhong Zhen Xiaolin Tong | 2013 | Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine2013,33,6: | 2
Highly efficient P uptake by Fe3O4 loaded amorphous Zr-La (carbonate) oxides: Electrostatic attraction, inner-sphere complexation and oxygen vacancies acceleration effect显示文摘Bimetallic oxides composites have received an increasing attention as promising adsorbents for aqueous phosphate (P) removal in recent years. In this study, a novel magnetic composite MZLCO was prepared by hybridizing amorphous Zr-La (carbonate) oxides (ZLCO) with nano-FeOthrough a one-pot solvothermal method for efficient phosphate adsorption. Our optimum sample of MZLCO-45 exhibited a high Langmuir maximum adsorption capacity of 96.16 mg P/g and performed well even at low phosphate concentration. The phosphate adsorption kinetics by MZLCO-45 fitted well with the pseudo-second-order model, and the adsorption capacity could reach 79% of the ultimate value within the first 60 min. The phosphate adsorption process was highly p H-dependent, and MZLCO-45 performed well over a wide p H range of 2.0-8.0. Moreover, MZLCO-45 showed a strong selectivity to phosphate in the presence of competing ions (Cl^(-), NO_(3)^(-), SO_(4)^(2-), HCO_(3)^(-), Ca^(2+), and Mg^(2+)) and a good reusability using the eluent of Na OH/Na Cl mixture, then 64% adsorption capacity remained after ten recycles. The initial 2.0 mg P/L in municipal wastewater and surface water could be efficiently reduced to below 0.1mg P/L by 0.07 g/L MZLCO-45, and the phosphate removal efficiencies were 95.7% and 96.21%, respectively. Phosphate adsorption mechanisms by MZLCO-45 could be attributed to electrostatic attraction and the inner-sphere complexation via ligand exchange forming Zr/La-O-P, -OH and CO_(3)^(2-)groups on MZLCO-45 surface played important roles in the ligand exchange process. The existence of oxygen vacancies could accelerate the phosphate absorption rate of the MZLCO-45 composites. | Chenyang Liu Yili Wang Xiaolin Li Junyi Li Shuoxun Dong Haotian Hao Yao Tong Yanqing Zhou | 2022 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2022,34,10: | 2
