| 4 | Correlation between Helicobacter pylori-associated gastric diseases and colorectal neoplasia显示文摘AIM: To explore the correlation between Helicobacter pylori(H. pylori)-associated gastric diseases and colorectal neoplasia.METHODS: Patients included in this study underwent a colonoscopy and esophago-gastro-duodenoscopy(EGD) along with histopathological measurement between March 2012 and March 2015 at Qi-Lu Hospital of Shandong University, who also had results of H. pylori detection. A total of 233 cases were selected. Demographic data, H. pylori infection status(including results of rapid urease tests and gastric mucosa pathological examinations) and histopathological examination results of gastric and colorectal mucosa were gathered and analyzed. The statistical analysis focused on the prevalence of colorectal neoplasms among patients with various histopathological categories of the stomach. ORs and their 95%CI were calculated to describe the strengths of the associations.RESULTS: The incidence rates of colorectal adenoma without high-grade intraepithelial neoplasia(HGIEN)(OR = 2.400, 95%CI: 0.969-5.941), adenoma with HGIEN(5.333, 1.025-27.758) and adenocarcinoma(1.455, 0.382-5.543) were all higher for patients with H. pylori-associated gastritis than for those in the control group. The incidence rate of colorectal adenoma with HGIEN(3.218, 0.767-13.509) was higher in patients with intestinal metaplasia than in the control group, while the incidence rates of adenoma without HGIEN(0.874, 0.414-1.845) and adenocarcinoma(0.376, 0.096-1.470) were lower in the intestinal metaplasia group than in the control group. The incidence rate of colorectal adenoma without HGIEN(3.111, 1.248-7.753) was significantly higher in the gastric intraepithelial neoplasia group than in the control group, while the rates of adenoma with HGIEN(1.481, 0.138-15.941) and adenocarcinoma(2.020, 0.561-7.272) were higher in the gastric intraepithelial neoplasia group. | 6 | Tumor microenvironment-responsive docetaxel-loaded micelle combats metastatic breast cancer显示文摘Efficient tumor-targeting drug delivery systems are urgently needed for treating metastatic breast cancer.In this work, a docetaxel(DTX)-loaded micelle(pDM) as the tumor-microenvironment-responsive delivery platform is developed. The micelle is composed of a pH-sensitive amphiphilic copolymer,poly((1,4-butanediol)-diacrylate-b-N,N-diisopropylethylenediamine)-polyethyleneimine(BD-PEI), and a matrix metalloproteinase(MMP)-responsive polymer, poly((1,4-butanediol)-diacrylate-b-N,N-diisopropy lethylenediamine)-peptide-polyethylene glycol(PEG)(BD-peptide-PEG). The PEG block of BD-peptidePEG will be split by MMPs at the tumor microenvironment, which leads to the change of the surface charge and particle size of the micelle to more positive and smaller one. Owing to this transformation and enhanced permeability and retention(EPR) effect, pDM delivers more DTX into tumor tissues and is internalized more efficiently by tumor cells than the non-MMP-sensitive micelles in the 4 T1 tumorbearing mice model. In addition, DTX is released in acidic endo/lysosomes due to the dissociation of the micelle, triggered by the protonation of the hydrophobic block of BD-PEI. As a result, the DTX-loaded micelle inhibits primary tumor growth and pulmonary metastasis effectively. | 10 | Yearly tropical cyclone potential impact index in China显示文摘A new composite index called the yearly tropical cyclone potential impact(YTCPI)is introduced.The relationship between YTCPI and activities of tropical cyclones(TCs)in China,disaster loss,and main ambient fields are investigated to show the potential of YTCPI as a new tool for short-term climate prediction of TCs.YTCPI can indicate TC activity and potential disaster loss.As correlation coefficients between YTCPI and frequency of landfalling TCs,the frequency of TCs traversing or forming inside a 24 h warning line in China from 1971 to 2010 are 0.58 and 0.56,respectively(both are at a statistically significant level,aboveα=0.001).Furthermore,three simple indexes are used to compare with YTCPI.They all have very close relationships with it,with correlation coefficients 0.75,0.82 and 0.78.For economic loss and YTCPI,the correlation coefficient is 0.57 for 1994–2009.Information on principal ambient fields(sea surface temperature,850 and 500 hPa geopotential heights)during the previous winter is reflected in the relationship with YTCPI.Spatial and temporal variabilities of ambient fields are extracted through empirical orthogonal function(EOF)analysis.Spatial distributions of correlation coefficient between YTCPI and ambient fields match the EOF main mode.Correlation coefficients between YTCPI and the EOF time array for the three ambient fields are 0.46,0.44 and 0.4,respectively,all statistically significant,aboveα=0.01.The YTCPI has the overall potential to be an improved prediction tool. | YIN YiZhou LUO Yong XIAO FengJing LANG XianMei | 2014 | Science China Earth Sciences2014,57,3: | 4 |

| 14 | Protective effects of carbenoxolone are associated with attenuation of oxidative stress in ischemic brain injury显示文摘Accumulating evidence has suggested that the gap junction plays an important role in the determination of cerebral ischemia, but the underlying mechanisms remain to be elucidated. In this study, we assessed the effect of a gap-junction blocker, carbenoxolone (CBX), on ischemia/reperfusion-induced brain injury and the possible mechanisms. By using the transient cerebral ischemia model induced by occlusion of the middle cerebral artery for 30 min followed by reperfusion for 24 h, we found that pre-administration of CBX (25 mg/kg, intracerebroventricular injection, 30 min before cerebral ischemic surgery) diminished the infarction size in rats. And this was associated with a decrease of reactive oxygen species generation and inhibition of the activation of astrocytes and microglia. In PC12 cells, H 2 O 2 treatment induced more coupling and apoptosis, while CBX partly inhibited the opening of gap junctions and improved the cell viability. These results suggest that cerebral ischemia enhances the opening of gap junctions. Although anapole modes have been demonstrated in metamaterials with threedimensional structures, the design and realization of planar anapole metamaterials in a wide frequency range is still a big challenge. Here we propose and experimentally demonstrate a planar anapole metamaterial consisting of dumbbell-shaped apertures on a stainless-steel sheet at terahertz frequencies. The planar metamaterial can generate a resonant transparency in the terahertz spectrum due to the excitation of the anapole mode.Particularly, the frequency of anapole-induced resonant transparency can be tuned easily in the range of 0.15–0.93 THz by simply varying one geometric parameter of the dumbbell apertures. | 19 | Application of a paraplegic gait orthosis in thoracolumbar spinal cord injury显示文摘Paraplegic gait orthosis has been shown to help paraplegic patients stand and walk, although this method cannot be individualized for patients with different spinal cord injuries and functional recovery of the lower extremities. There is, however, a great need to develop individualized paraplegic orthosis to improve overall quality of life for paraplegic patients. The control group received systematic rehabilitation training, including maintenance of joint range of motion, residual muscle strength training, standing training, balance training, and functional electrical stimulation. The observation group received an individualized paraplegic locomotion brace and functional training according to the various spinal cord injury levels and muscle strength based on comprehensive systematic rehabilitation training. After 3 months of rehabilitation training, the observation group achieved therapeutic locomotion in 8 cases, family-based locomotion in 7 cases, and community-based locomotion in 3 cases. However, locomotion was not achieved in any of the control group patients.
