| 2 | Fecal microbiota transplantation broadening its application beyond intestinal disorders显示文摘Intestinal dysbiosis is now known to be a complication in a myriad of diseases.Fecal microbiota transplantation(FMT),as a microbiota-target therapy,is arguably very effective for curing Clostridium difficile infection and has good outcomes in other intestinal diseases.New insights have raised an interest in FMT for the management of extra-intestinal disorders associated with gut microbiota.This review shows that it is an exciting time in the burgeoning science of FMT application in previously unexpected areas,including metabolic diseases,neuropsychiatric disorders,autoimmune diseases,allergic disorders,and tumors.A randomized controlled trial was conducted on FMT in metabolic syndrome by infusing microbiota from lean donors or from self-collected feces,with the resultant findings showing that the lean donor feces group displayed increased insulin sensitivity,along with increased levels of butyrate-producing intestinal microbiota.Case reports of FMT have also shown favorable outcomes in Parkinson's disease,multiple sclerosis,myoclonus dystonia,chronic fatigue syndrome,and idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura.FMT is a promising approach in the manipulation of the intestinal microbiota and has potential applications in a variety of extra-intestinal conditions associated with intestinal dysbiosis. | Meng-Que Xu Hai-Long Cao Wei-Qiang Wang Shan Wang Xiao-Cang Cao Fang Yan Bang-Mao Wang | 2015 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2015,21,1: | 63 |

| 4 | Epithelioid angiomyolipoma of the liver:Cross-sectional imaging findings of 10 immunohistochemically-verified cases显示文摘AIM:To retrospectively evaluate the computed tomography(CT)/magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) imaging features of epithelioid angiomyolipoma of the liver(Epi-HAML),with pathology as a reference. METHODS:The CT/MRI findings(number,diameter, lobar location,and appearance of lesions)in a series of 10 patients with 12 pathologically proven epithelioid angiomyolipomas of the liver were retrospectively analyzed.The imaging features,including attenuation/ signal intensity characteristics,presence of fat, hypervascular,outer rim,and vessels within lesion, were evaluated and compared with that of non-Epi-HAML in 11 patients(13 lesions).The Fisher exact test was used to compare difference in probability of imaging features between the two types. RESULTS:For 21 patients,CT images of 15 patients and MR images of six patients were available.No patient underwent two examinations.For the 15 patients with a CT scan,all HAML lesions in the two groups(10 Epi-HAML and seven non-Epi-HAML) manifested as hypoattenuation.For the six patients with MRI,all lesions(two Epi-HAML and six non-Epi- HAML)were hypointense on T1WI(fat suppression)and hyperintense on T2WI.There were 10 non-Epi-HAML, but only two Epi-HAML lesions showed the presence offat,which significantly different between the two types (P=0.005).On the dynamic contrast enhancement (DCE)imaging,eight Epi-HAML,and 13 non-Epi lesions manifested as hypervascular.Punctate or curved vessels were displayed in 10 Epi-HAML as well as in nine non-Epi lesions and outer rim enhancement could be found with eight Epi-HAML as well as six non-Epi lesions. | 5 | Incidence and mortality rate of esophageal cancer has decreased during past 40 years in Hebei Province,China显示文摘Background:Hebei province is located in North of China with of approximately 6% of whole national population.It is known as a high-risk area for esophageal cancer in China and worldwide.The aim of our study was to estimate the esophageal cancer burden and trend in Hebei Province.Methods:Eight cancer registries in Hebei Province submitted cancer registry data to the Hebei Provincial Cancer Registry Center.All data were qualified and compiled for cancer statistics in 2011.The pooled data were stratified by gender and age group(0,1-4,5-9,10-14…80+).Incidence and mortality rates were age-standardized to World Segi's population standard and expressed per 100,000 persons.In addition,proportions and cumulative incidence/mortality rates for esophageal cancer were calculated.Esophageal cancer mortality data during the periods 1973-1975,1990-1992,and 2004-2005 were extracted from the national death surveys.Mortality and incidence rate data from Cixian and Shexian were obtained from population-based cancer registries in each county.Results:The estimated number of newly diagnosed esophageal cancer cases and deaths in 2011 in Hebei Province was 24,318 and 18,226,respectively.The crude incidence rate of esophageal cancer was 33.37/100,000(males,42.18/100,000 and females,24.31/100,000).The age-standardized rate by world standard population(ASRW) was 28.09/100,000,ranking third among all cancers.The esophageal cancer mortality rate was 25.01/100,000(males,31.40/100,000 and females,18.45/100,000),ranking third in deaths among all cancers.The mortality rates of esophageal cancer displayed a significant decreasing trend in Hebei Province from 1973-1975(ASRW =48.69/100,000) to 2004-2005(ASRW =28.02/100,000),with a decreased rate of 42.45%.In Cixian,the incidence of esophageal cancer decreased from 250.76/100,000 to 106.74/100,000 in males and from 153.86/100,000 to 75.41/100,000 in females,with annual percentage changes(APC) of 2.13 and 2.16,while the mortality rates declined with an APC of 2.46 for males and 3.10 for females from 1988 to 2011.In Shexian,the incidence rate decreased from 116.90/100,000 to 74.12/100,000 in males and from 46.98/100,000 to 40.64/100,000 in females,while the mortality rates declined,with an APC of 4.89 in males from 2003 to 2011.Conclusions:Although the incidence and mortality rates of esophageal cancer remain high,an obvious decreasing trend has been observed in Hebei Province,as well as in high-risk regions,such as Cixian and Shexian,over the past 40 years. | Yutong He Yan Wu Guohui Song Yongwei Li Di Liang Jing Jin Denggui Wen Baoen Shan | 2015 | Chinese Journal of Cancer Research2015,27,6: | 22 |
| 6 | Climate and litter C/N ratio constrain soil organic carbon accumulation显示文摘Soil organic carbon(SOC) plays critical roles in stabilizing atmospheric CO2 concentration, but the mechanistic controls on the amount and distribution of SOC on global scales are not well understood. In turn, this has hampered the ability to model global C budgets and to find measures to mitigate climate change. Here, based on the data from a large field survey campaign with 2600 plots across China’s forest ecosystems and a global collection of published data from forested land, we find that a low litter carbon-to-nitrogen ratio(C/N) and high wetness index(P/PET, precipitation-to-potentialevapotranspiration ratio) are the two factors that promote SOC accumulation, with only minor contributions of litter quantity and soil texture. The field survey data demonstrated that high plant diversity decreased litter C/N and thus indirectly promoted SOC accumulation by increasing the litter quality. We conclude that any changes in plant-community composition, plant-species richness and environmental factors that can reduce the litter C/N ratio, or climatic changes that increase wetness index, may promote SOC accumulation. | 10 | Effectiveness of Different Waist Circumference Cut-off Values in Predicting Metabolic Syndrome Prevalence and Risk Factors in Adults in China显示文摘Objective To study the effectiveness of waist circumference cut-off values in predicting the prevalence of metabolic syndrome(MetS) and risk factors in adults in China. Methods A cross-sectional survey was condcuted in 14 provinces(autonomous region, municipality) in China. A total of 47 325 adults aged ≥20 years were selected by multistage stratified sampling, and questionnaire survey and physical and clinical examination were conducted among them. MetS was defined according to the International Diabetes Federation(IDF) criteria and modified IDF criteria.Results The age-standardized prevalence of MetS was 24.2%(22.1% in men and 25.8% in women) and 19.5%(22.1% in men and 18.0% in women) according to the IDF criteria and modified IDF criteria respectively. The age-standardized prevalence of pre-MetS was 8.1%(8.6% in men and 7.8% in women) according to the modified IDF criteria. The prevalence of MetS was higher in urban residents than rural residents and in northern China residents than in southern China residents. The prevalence of central obesity was about 30% in both men and women according to the ethnicity-specific cut-off values of waist circumference for central obesity(90 cm for men and 85 cm for women). Multivariate regression analysis revealed no significant difference in risk factors between the two MetS definitions. | 11 | “Omics” in pharmaceutical research: overview, applications, challenges, and future perspectives显示文摘In the post-genomic era, biological studies are characterized by the rapid development and wide application of a series of 'omics' technologies, including genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, transcriptomics, lipidomics, cytomics, metallomics, ionomics, interactomics, and phenomics. These 'omics' are often based on global analyses of biological samples using high through-put analytical approaches and bioinformatics and may provide new insights into biological phenomena. | 13 | Influence of moisture on the growth and biomass allocation in Haloxylon ammodendron and Tamarix ramosissima seedlings in the shelterbelt along the Tarim Desert Highway, Xinjiang, China显示文摘The authors studied the effects using three different levels of irrigation on the growth and biomass allocation in H. ammodendron and T. ramosissima seedlings in the shelterbelt along the Tarim Desert Highway. The three irrigation amounts were 35 (CK), 24.5 (treatment 1), and 14 (treatment 2) kg·ind. plant-1·once-1, respectively. The results show that (1) the vertical depth of the two seedlings’ root increased with lower levels of irrigation showing that the two species adapted to decreased irrigation by root elongation in the hinterland of the Taklimakan Desert, and the vertical root depth of H. ammodendron under treatment 2 was notably higher than CK. (2) Compared with CK, the belowground biomass of treatment 1 and 2 both showed a significant increase as follows: H. ammodendron seedlings in- creased by 14.51% and 37.03% under treatment 1 and 2, respectively, while T. ramosissima seedlings increased by 68.19% and 25.78% under treatment 1 and 2, respectively. This means that H. ammoden- dron seedlings were more adapted to the conditions in treatment 2 while T. ramosissima seedlings were better adapted to treatment 1 conditions. (3) When compared with CK, the fine root bomass of these two species all exhibited some increase under both treatments, and ANOVA analysis showed that the biomass of deep layer root of the two species under treatment 2 was notably higher than CK and treatment 1. This should help seedlings to more effectively absorb soil water from deep layers during dry conditions. (4) The root-shoot ratio was different for these two species. For H. ammodendron seed- lings, the root-shoot ratio was less than 1, while for T. ramosissim seedlings it was larger than 1. The root-shoot ratio of H. ammodendron seedlings increased with decreasing levels of irrigation, and that of T. ramosissim seedlings also increased under treatment 2. | 14 | Recent progress of arsenic adsorption on TiO2 in the presence of coexisting ions: A review显示文摘Arsenic(As)-contaminated wastewater and groundwater pose a pressing environmental issue and worldwide concern. Adsorption of As using TiO_2materials, in combination with filtration,introduces a promising technology for the treatment of As-contaminated water. This review presents an overview on the recent progress of the application of TiO_2for removal of As from wastewater and groundwater. The main focus is on the following three pressing issues that limit the field applications of TiO_2for As removal: coexisting ions, simulation of breakthrough curves, and regeneration and reuse of spent TiO_2materials. We first examined how the coexisting ions in water, especially high concentrations of cations in industrial wastewater,affect the efficacy of As removal using the TiO_2materials. We then discussed As breakthrough curves and the effect of compounded ions on the breakthrough curves. We successfully simulated the breakthrough curves by PHREEQC after integrating the CD-MUSIC model. We further discussed challenges facing the regeneration and reuse of TiO_2media for practical applications. RF ablation has the following advantages in the treatment of hepatic hemangiomas: minimal invasiveness, definite efficacy, high safety, fast recovery, relatively simple operation, and wide applicability. | 17 | NK cell-based cancer immunotherapy: from basic biology to clinical application显示文摘Natural killer(NK) cells, which recognize and kill target cells independent of antigen specificity and major histocompatibility complex(MHC) matching, play pivotal roles in immune defence against tumors. However, tumor cells often acquire the ability to escape NK cell-mediated immune surveillance. Thus, understanding mechanisms underlying regulation of NK cell phenotype and function within the tumor environment is instrumental for designing new approaches to improve the current cell-based immunotherapy. In this review, we elaborate the main biological features and molecular mechanisms of NK cells that pertain to regulation of NK cell-mediated anti-tumor activity. We further overview current clinical approaches regarding NK cell-based cancer therapy, including cytokine infusion, adoptive transfer of autologous or allogeneic NK cells, applications of chimeric antigen receptor(CAR)-expressing NK cells and adoptive transfer of memory-like NK cells. | 18 | Immune Homeostasis: Effects of Chinese Herbal Formulae and Herb-Derived Compounds on Allergic Asthma in Different Experimental Models显示文摘Allergic asthma is thought to arise from an imbalance of immune regulation, which is characterized by the production of large quantities of Ig E antibodies by B cells and a decrease of the interferon-γ/interleukin-4(Th1/Th2) ratio. Certain immunomodulatory components and Chinese herbal formulae have been used in traditional herbal medicine for thousands of years. However, there are few studies performing evidence-based Chinese medicine(CM) research on the mechanisms and efficacy of these drugs in allergic asthma. This review aims to explore the roles of Chinese herbal formulae and herb-derived compounds in experimental research models of allergic asthma. We screened published modern CM research results on the experimental effects of Chinese herbal formulae and herb-derived bioactive compounds for allergic asthma and their possible underlying mechanisms in English language articles from the Pub Med and the Google Scholar databases with the keywords allergic asthma, experimental model and Chinese herbal medicine. We found 22 Chinese herb species and 31 herb-derived anti-asthmatic compounds as well as 12 Chinese herbal formulae which showed a reduction of airway hyperresponsiveness, allergen-specific immunoglobulin E, inflammatory cell infiltration and a regulation of Th1 and Th2 cytokines in vivo, in vitro and ex vivo, respectively. | 20 | Effects of viral infection and microbial diversity on patients with sepsis:A retrospective study based on metagenomic next-generation sequencing显示文摘BACKGROUND: The study aims to investigate the performance of a metagenomic next-generationsequencing (NGS)-based diagnostic technique for the identifi cation of potential bacterial and viral infectionsand eff ects of concomitant viral infection on the survival rate of intensive care unit (ICU) sepsis patients.METHODS: A total of 74 ICU patients with sepsis who were admitted to our institution from February1, 2018 to June 30, 2019 were enrolled. Separate blood samples were collected from patients for bloodcultures and metagenomic NGS when the patients’ body temperature was higher than 38 °C. Patients’demographic data, including gender, age, ICU duration, ICU scores, and laboratory results, were recorded.The correlations between pathogen types and sepsis severity and survival rate were evaluated.RESULTS: NGS produced higher positive results (105 of 118;88.98%) than blood cultures(18 of 118;15.25%) over the whole study period. Concomitant viral infection correlated closelywith sepsis severity and had the negative effect on the survival of patients with sepsis. However,correlation analysis indicated that the bacterial variety did not correlate with the severity of sepsis.CONCLUSIONS: Concurrent viral load correlates closely with the severity of sepsis and thesurvival rate of the ICU sepsis patients.
