| 3 | Active Tectonics and Erosional Unloading at the Eastern Margin of the Tibetan Plateau显示文摘The eastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau is marked by an extremely steep mountain front with relief of over 5 km. This topography,coupled with abundant Mesozoic thrusts within the margin,explains why tectonic maps of the India-Asia collision typically show the eastern margin as a major thrust zone. Actually,it does not like that. Field observations suggest that the margin is better characterized as a zone of NNE-directed dextral shear with extensive strike-slip faulting and secondary thrusting. | 8 | Dihydromyricetin and Salvianolic acid B inhibit alpha-synuclein aggregation and enhance chaperone-mediated autophagy显示文摘Background:Progressive accumulation ofα-synuclein is a key step in the pathological development of Parkinson’s disease.Impaired protein degradation and increased levels ofα-synuclein may trigger a pathological aggregation in vitro and in vivo.The chaperone-mediated autophagy(CMA)pathway is involved in the intracellular degradation processes ofα-synuclein.Dysfunction of the CMA pathway impairsα-synuclein degradation and causes cytotoxicity.Results:In the present study,we investigated the effects on the CMA pathway andα-synuclein aggregation using bioactive ingredients(Dihydromyricetin(DHM)and Salvianolic acid B(Sal B))extracted from natural medicinal plants.In both cell-free and cellular models ofα-synuclein aggregation,after administration of DHM and Sal B,we observed significant inhibition ofα-synuclein accumulation and aggregation.Cells were co-transfected with a Cterminal modifiedα-synuclein(SynT)and synphilin-1,and then treated with DHM(10μM)and Sal B(50μM)16 hours after transfection;levels ofα-synuclein aggregation decreased significantly(68%for DHM and 75%for Sal B).Concomitantly,we detected increased levels of LAMP-1(a marker of lysosomal homeostasis)and LAMP-2A(a key marker of CMA).Immunofluorescence analyses showed increased colocalization between LAMP-1 and LAMP-2A withα-synuclein inclusions after treatment with DHM and Sal B.We also found increased levels of LAMP-1 and LAMP-2A both in vitro and in vivo,along with decreased levels ofα-synuclein.Moreover,DHM and Sal B treatments exhibited anti-inflammatory activities,preventing astroglia-and microglia-mediated neuroinflammation in BAC-α-syn-GFP transgenic mice.Conclusions:Our data indicate that DHM and Sal B are effective in modulatingα-synuclein accumulation and aggregate formation and augmenting activation of CMA,holding potential for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease. | Jia-Zhen Wu Mustafa Ardah Caroline Haikal Alexander Svanbergsson Meike Diepenbroek Nishant N.Vaikath Wen Li Zhan-You Wang Tiago F.Outeiro Omar M.El-Agnaf Jia-Yi Li | 2019 | Translational Neurodegeneration2019,8,1: | 11 |

| 10 | Effects of climate change on phenology and primary productivity in the desert steppe of Inner Mongolia显示文摘Variations in temperature and precipitation affect local ecosystems. Considerable spatial and temporal heterogeneity exists in arid ecosystems such as desert steppes. In this study, we analyzed the spatiotemporal dynamics of climate and vegetation phenology in the desert steppe of Inner Mongolia, China using meteorological data(1961–2010) from 11 stations and phenology data(2004–2012) from 6 ecological observation stations. We also estimated the gross primary production for the period of 1982–2009 and found that the annual mean temperature increased at a rate of 0.47oC/decade during 1961–2010, with the last 10 years being consistently warmer than the 50 years as an average. The most significant warming occurred in winters. Annual precipitation slightly decreased during the 50-year period, with summer precipitation experiencing the highest drop in the last 10 years, and spring precipitation, a rise. Spatially, annual precipitation increased significantly in the northeastern and eastern central areas next to the typical steppe. From 2004 to 2012, vegetation green-up and senescence date advanced in the study area, shortening the growing season. Consequently, the primary productivity of the desert steppe decreased along the precipitation gradient from southeast to northwest. Temporally, productivity increased during the period of 1982–1999 and significantly decreased after 2000. Overall, the last decade witnessed the most dramatic climatic changes that were likely to negatively affect the desert steppe ecosystem. | 11 | Osteogenic potential of human periosteum-derived progenitor cells in PLGA scaffold using allogeneic serum显示文摘The use of periosteum-derived progenitor cells (PCs) combined with bioresorbable materials is an attractive approach for tissue engineering. The aim of this study was to characterize the osteogenic differentiation of PC in 3-dimensional (3D) poly-lactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA) fleeces cultured in medium containing allogeneic human serum. PCs were isolated and expanded in monolayer culture. Expanded cells of passage 3 were seeded into PLGA constructs and cultured in osteogenic me- dium for a maximum period of 28 d. Morphological, histological and cell viability analyses of three-dimensionally cultured PCs were performed to elucidate osseous synthesis and deposition of a calcified matrix. Furthermore, the mRNA expression of type I collagen, osteocalcin and osteonectin was semi-quantitively evaluated by real-time reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reac- tion (RT-PCR). The fibrin gel immobilization technique provided homogeneous PCs distribution in 3D PLGA constructs. Live-dead staining indicated a high viability rate of PCs inside the PLGA scaffolds. Secreted nodules of neo-bone tissue formation and the presence of matrix mineralization were confirmed by positive von Kossa staining. The osteogenic differentiation of PCs was further demonstrated by the detection of type I collagen, osteocalcin and osteonectin gene expression. | 12 | Would integrated Western and traditional Chinese medicine have more benefits for stroke rehabilitation? A systematic review and meta-analysis显示文摘Background Stroke is a major cause of death or long-term disability worldwide.Many patients with stroke receive integrative therapy consisting of Western medicine(WM)and routine rehabilitation in conjunction with Chinese medicine(CM),such as acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine.However,there is no available evidence on the effectiveness of the combined use of WM and CM interventions in stroke rehabilitation.Aims The purpose of this meta-analysis is to evaluate the results of all individual studies to assess the combined use of CM and WM in stroke rehabilitation compared with WM only.Methods The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis guidelines were followed.MEDLINE,EMBASE,Cochrane and China National Knowledge Infrastructure(CNKI)were searched.The included outcomes were dependency,motor function,depression and swallowing function.Subgroup analysis was performed,and publication bias was assessed using funnel plots.Summary of review 58 studies and 6339 patients were included in the meta-analysis.Subgroup analysis revealed that combined therapy comprising both acupuncture and WM had a superior effect on improving dependency and swallowing function compared with standard WM therapy alone.Potential superiority of combined therapy comprising CM and WM in improving depression compared with standard WM therapy was also found.Conclusions Our results indicate that the combined use of CM and WM could be more efficacious in stroke rehabilitation compared with the use of WM therapy alone.However,most studies were short in duration(2 to 4 weeks)and prone to different types of biases,which prevents making any conclusion regarding the long-term effects and raises concerns regarding true efficacy in context of high likelihood of Hawthorn bias.So,more randomised controlled trials with more rigorous design and longer duration of treatment and follow-up need to be conducted to compare WM alone versus WM and CM combined. | Linda LD Zhong Ya Zheng Alexander Y Lau Norman Wong Liang Yao Xingyao Wu Tengteng Shao Zhenxing Lu Huijuan Li Chun Sum Yuen Jianwen Guo Suzanne Lo Janita Chau Kam Wa Chan Bacon Fung Leung Ng Zhaoxiang Bian Edwin Chau-leung Yu | 2022 | Stroke & Vascular Neurology2022,7,1: | 7 |
| 13 | Appropriately adapted properties of hot-extruded Zn-0.5Cu-xFe alloys aimed for biodegradable guided bone regeneration membrane application显示文摘Appropriately adapted comprehensive mechanical properties,degradation behavior and biocompatibility are prerequisites for the application of Zn-based biodegradable implants.In this study,hot-extruded Zn-0.5Cu-xFe(x=0.1,0.2 and 0.4 wt%)alloys were fabricated as candidates for biodegradable materials for guided bone regeneration(GBR)membranes.The hot-extrusion process and Cu alloying were expected mostly to enhance the mechanical properties,and the Fe alloying was added mainly for regulating the degradation.The microstructure,mechanical properties and in vitro degradation behavior were systematically investigated.The ZnCuFe alloys were composed of a Zn matrix and FeZn13 phase.With increasing Fe content,a higher FeZn13 phase precipitation with larger particles was observed.Since elongation declined significantly until fracture with increasing Fe content up to 0.4 wt%,the ZnCuFe(0.2 wt%)alloy achieved a good balance between mechanical strength and ductility,with an ultimate tensile strength of 202.3 MPa and elongation at fracture of 41.2%.Moreover,the addition of Fe successfully accelerated the degradation of ZnCuFe alloys.The ZnCuFe(0.2 wt%)alloy showed relatively uniform corrosion in the long-term degradation test.Furthermore,extracts of the ZnCuFe(0.2 wt%)alloy showed no apparent cytotoxic effects against L929 fibroblasts,Saos-2 osteoblasts or TAg periosteal cells.The ZnCuFe(0.2 wt%)alloy exhibited the potential to inhibit bacterial adhesion of Streptococcus gordonii and mixed oral bacteria.Our study provides evidence that the ZnCuFe(0.2 wt%)alloy can represent a promising material for the application as a suitable GBR membrane. | Wentai Zhang Ping Li Gang Shen Xiaoshan Mo Chao Zhou Dorothea Alexander Frank Rupp Jürgen Geis-Gerstorfer Haijun Zhang Guojiang Wan | 2021 | Bioactive Materials2021,6,4: | 6 |

| 16 | Anti-inflammatory effects of characterized orange peel extracts enriched with bioactive polymethoxyflavones显示文摘In view of the potential of polymethoxyflavones(PMFs)and hydroxylated PMFs(OH-PMFs)as bioactives against inflammation,we prepared six different orange peel extracts(OPEs).The major compounds of these extracts were characterized and quantified by high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC).Effects on inflammation were analyzed by nutrigenomics using a human cell-based TPA-induced monocyte–macrophage differentiation model employing U-937 cells and inflammatory surrogate genes.Dose response and kinetics analysis of OPEs with different chemical profiles revealed less cytotoxic effects of PMFs as compared to OH-PMFs as demonstrated by the MTT-method.Noteworthy,a comparison of two PMF members such as 3,5,6,7,3,4-hexamethoxyflavone(HexaMF)and 3,5,6,7,8,3,4-heptamethoxyflavone(HeptaMF)exhibited less cytotoxic effects of HeptaMF as compared to HexaMF.A specific OPE enriched with HeptaMF,PMFs and OH-PMFs at low concentrations(10g/mL)significantly down-regulated the expression of a panel of genes involved in inflammatory response,including COX-2,TNF-α,ICAM-1,NFκB,IL-1β,IL-6,and IL-8 with an inflammatory index of−0.55.The strong anti-inflammatory effects were then validated in a mouse carrageenan-induced paw edema model.Oral intake of OPE reduced paw edema significantly in a dose-dependent manner.Importantly,a dosage of 250 mg/kg gave an anti-inflammatory effect comparable to ibuprofen.A preliminary clinical study showed that OPE was well tolerated showing no adverse side effects.In summary,enrichment of phyto extracts such as OPEs with specific polymethoxyflavones as anti-inflammatory bioactives is a promising strategy to find naturally derived extracts that are effective against diseases associated with inflammation.©2014 Beijing Academy of Food Sciences.Production and hosting by Elsevier B.V.All rights reserved. | Alexander Gosslau Kuang Yu Chen Chi-Tang Ho Shiming Li | 2014 | Food Science and Human Wellness2014,3,1: | 5 |

| 18 | Age-Dependent Alpha-Synuclein Accumulation and Phosphorylation in the Enteric Nervous System in a Transgenic Mouse Model of Parkinson's Disease显示文摘The enteric nervous system(ENS) controls the function of the gastrointestinal tract and has been implicated in various diseases, including Parkinson's disease(PD). PD is a neurodegenerative disease with Lewy bodies(LBs) and Lewy neurites(LNs) as the main pathological features. In addition to the typical motor symptoms in PD,attention has been drawn to non-motor symptoms, such as constipation, implying dysfunction of the ENS. In the present study, we characterized the age-dependent morphological alterations and aggregation of a-synuclein(asyn), the primary protein component in LBs and LNs, in the ENS in an a-syn transgenic mouse model. We found that the expression and accumulation of a-syn increased gradually in neurons of Meissner's and Auerbach's plexuses of the gastrointestinal tract with age(from 1 week to 2 years). In addition, a-syn was increasingly phosphorylated at the serine 129 residue, reflecting pathological alterations of the protein over time. Furthermore, asyn was present in different subtypes of neurons expressing vasoactive intestinal polypeptide, neuronal nitric oxide synthase, or calretinin.
