1Positioning taxonomic research for the future显示文摘Why do taxonomists matter? The work of taxonomists is often understated if not completely misunderstood. Without taxonomists, organisms cannot be accurately identified, neither can these organisms be given universally accepted names, and reliably positioned in the phylogenetic tree of life. 3Defining honeybee subspecies in an evolutionary context warrants strategized conservation显示文摘Despite the urgent need for conservation consideration,strategic action plans for the preservation of the Asian honeybee,Apis cerana Fabricius,1793,remain lacking.Both the convergent and divergent adaptations of this widespread insect have led to confusing phenotypical traits and inconsistent infraspecific taxonomy.Unclear subspecies boundaries pose a significant challenge to honeybee conservation efforts,as it is difficult to effectively prioritize conservation targets without a clear understanding of subspecies identities.Here,we investigated genome variations in 362 worker bees representing almost all populations of mainland A.cerana to understand how evolution has shaped its population structure.Whole-genome single nucleotide polymorphisms(SNPs)based on nuclear sequences revealed eight putative subspecies,with all seven peripheral subspecies exhibiting mutually exclusive monophyly and distinct genetic divergence from the widespread central subspecies.Our results demonstrated that most classic morphological traits,including body size,were related to the climatic variables of the local habitats and did not reflect the true evolutionary history of the organism.Thus,such morphological traits were not suitable for subspecific delineation.Conversely,wing vein characters showed relative independence to the environment and supported the subspecies boundaries inferred from nuclear genomes.Mitochondrial phylogeny further indicated that the present subspecies structure was a result of multiple waves of population divergence from a common ancestor.Based on our findings,we propose that criteria for subspecies delineation should be based on evolutionary independence,trait distinction,and geographic isolation.We formally defined and described eight subspecies of mainland A.cerana.Elucidation of the evolutionary history and subspecies boundaries enables a customized conservation strategy for both widespread and endemic honeybee conservation units,guiding colony introduction and breeding.Lifei Qiu Jiangxing Dong Xingan Li Sajad HParey Ken Tan Michael Orr Aquib Majeed Xue Zhang Shiqi Luo Xuguo Zhou Chaodong Zhu Ting Ji Qingsheng Niu Shanlin Liu Xin Zhou 2023Zoological Research2023,44,3:1
4A joint call for actions to advance taxonomy in China显示文摘Taxonomy plays an important role in understanding the origin, evolution, and ecological functionality of biodiversity. There are large number of unknown species yet to be described by taxonomists, which together with their ecosystem services cannot be effectively protected prior to description. Despite this, taxonomy has been increasingly underrated insufficient funds and permanent positions to retain young talents. Further, the impact factordriven evaluation systems in China exacerbate this downward trend, so alternative evaluation metrics are urgently necessary. When the current generation of outstanding taxonomists retires,there will be too few remaining taxonomists left to train the next generation. 6An integrative bioinformatics pipeline shows that honeybee-associated microbiomes are driven primarily by pollen composition显示文摘The microbiomes associated with bee nests influence colony health through various mechanisms,although it is not yet clear how honeybee congeners differ in microbiome assembly processes,in particular the degrees to which floral visitations and the environment contribute to different aspects of diversity.We used DNA metabarcoding to sequence bacterial 16S rRNA from honey and stored pollen from nests of 4 honeybee species(Apis cerana,A.dorsata,A.florea,and A.laboriosa)sampled throughout Yunnan,China,a global biodiversity hotspot.We developed a computational pipeline integrating multiple databases for quantifying key facets of diversity,including compositional,taxonomic,phylogenetic,and functional ones.Further,we assessed candidate drivers of observed microbiome dissimilarity,particularly differences in floral visitations,habitat disturbance,and other key environmental variables.Analyses revealed that microbiome alpha diversity was broadly equivalent across the study sites and between bee species,apart from functional diversity which was very low in nests of the reclusive A.laboriosa.Turnover in microbiome composition across Yunnan was driven predominantly by pollen composition.Human disturbance negatively impacted both compositional and phylogenetic alpha diversity of nest microbiomes,but did not correlate with microbial turnover.We herein make progress in understanding microbiome diversity associated with key pollinators in a biodiversity hotspot,and provide a model for the use of a comprehensive informatics framework in assessing pattern and drivers of diversity,which enables the inclusion of explanatory variables both subtly and fundamentally different and enables elucidation of emergent or unexpected drivers.Douglas Chesters Xiuwei Liu Karen L.Bell Michael C.Orr Tingting Xie Qingsong Zhou Chaodong Zhu 2023Insect Science2023,30,2:0
7Biocomposites of Polylactic Acid Reinforced by DL-Lactic Acid-Grafted Microfibrillated Cellulose显示文摘Microfibrillated cellulose(MFC)is often added to polylactic acid(PLA)matrixes as a reinforcing filler to obtain fully-biodegradable composites with improved mechanical properties.However,the incompatibility between MFC and the PLA matrix limits the mechanical performance of MFC-reinforced PLA composites.In this paper,DL-lactic acid-grafted-MFC(MFC-g-DL)was used to improve the compatibility with PLA.Reinforced composites were prepared by melt extrusion and hot-cold pressing.The tensile strength of the PLA/MFC-g-DL composite increased by 22.1%compared with that of PLA after adding 1%MFC-g-DL.Scanning electron microscopy(SEM),differential scanning calorimetry(DSC),and dynamic thermomechanical analysis(DMA)were used to explore the enhancement mechanism.The energy dissipation in the MFC network and the improved compatibility between PLA and MFC-g-DL played important roles in the reinforcement.The SEM results showed that there was a closer combination between PLA and MFC-g-DL.The DSC results showed that the addition of cellulose changed the glass transition temperature,melting temperature,and crystallization temperature of PLA.The TG results showed that the initial and maximum decomposition temperature were lower than those of PLA.The ultraviolet spectra showed that the composite had good transparency at a low concentration of MFC-g-DL.Chaodong Liu Yutong Yang Boyu Cui Weihong Wang 2022Journal of Renewable Materials2022,10,11:0

9Tamsulosin as medical expulsive therapy for lower ureterolithiasis:A meta-analysis显示文摘Objective: To review the evidence for tamsulosin as medical expulsive therapy in enhancing the effectiveness of distal ureteral stone clearance rate. Methods: We searched Pubmed/Medline, Embase, CBM and the Cochrane Library up to October 2011. All randomized controlled trials in which tamsulosin was evaluated with distal ureterolithiasis were eligible for the analysis. Outcome measure assessed was stone clearance rate. Two authors independently assessed study quality and extracted data. All data were analyzed using RevMan 5.1. Results: Thirteen studies involving 1067 participants met the inclusion criteria. Study duration ranged from 7 to 42 d. The pooled analysis showed an improvement of 41% in stone clearance rate of tamsulosin as medical expulsive therapy for distal ureteral calculi (RR=1.41, 95% CI=1.18 to 1.70). 11Improvement in the Performance of the Polylactic Acid Composites by Using Deep Eutectic Solvent Treated Pulp Fiber显示文摘As the most favorable alternative to petroleum-based polymers,polylactic acid(PLA)which is the most promising degradable polymer has attracted increasing attention.However,the addition of cellulose to improve its strength often results in a reduction in its toughness.In this work,microscale cellulose is first prepared from pulp fibers by using a deep eutectic solvent,and then is used as the reinforcement of PLA.A microcrystalline cellulose(MCC)/PLA sheet with uniform texture is obtained by the solution mixing,melt blending,hot-pressing and cold-pressing process.The effects of MCC on the crystallization,thermal stability and mechanical properties of the PLA matrix were studied.Upon the addition of 1%cellulose fiber,the tensile strength of MCC/PLA composite sheet increased by 27%,and the elongation at break did not shown an evident decrease.The strength enhancement mechanism was elucidated using scanning electron microscopy,differential scanning calorimetry,and dynamic thermomechanical analysis.The energy dissipation during the deformation process and the compatibility of AMCC and rougher surface of MCC play important role in the strength enhancement.Additionally,UV spectroscopy showed that the composite material absorbed some ultraviolet light.Our results show that the combined use of a deep eutectic solvent and solution mixing is an effective approach for improving the strength of PLA while maintaining its toughness.Lei Tan Liangxian Liu Chaodong Liu Weihong Wang 2021Journal of Renewable Materials2021,9,11:0
