| 3 | Source emissions and climate change impacts on the multimedia transport and fate of persistent organic pollutants,Chaohu watershed,eastern China显示文摘Emission intensity and climate change control the transport flux and fate of persistent organic pollutants(POPs)inmultiple environmental compartments.This study applied amultimedia model(BETR model)to explore alternations in the spatio-temporal trends of concentrations and transport flux of benzopyrene(BaP),phenanthrene(Phe),perfluorooctane sulfonates(PFOS)and polychlorinated biphenyls(PCBs)in the Chaohu watershed,located in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River,China in response to changes in source emissions and climate.The potential historic and future risks of these pollutants also were assessed.The results suggest that current trends in concentrations and transport were similar to that of their emissions between 2005 and 2018.During the next 100 years,temporal trends and spatial patterns were not predicted to change significantly,which is consistent with climate change.Based on sensitivity and correlation analyses,climate change had significant effects on multi-media concentrations and transport fluxes of BaP,Phe,PFOS and PCBs,and rainfall intensity was the predominant controlling factor.Risk quotients(RQs)of BaP and Phe-in soil increased from 0.42 to 0.95 and 0.06 to 0.35,respectively,from 2005 to 2090,indicating potential risks.The RQs of the other examined contaminants exhibited little potential risk in soil,water,or sediment.Based on spatial patterns,it was inferred that the ecosystem around Lake Chaohu is the most at risk.The study provides insights needed for local pollution control of POPs in the Chaohu watershed.In addition,the developed approach can be applied to other watersheds world-wide. | Xianghui Cao Shouliang Huo Hanxiao Zhang Jiaqi Zheng Zhuoshi He Chunzi Ma Shuai Song | 2021 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2021,33,11: | 3 |

| 10 | What drives the change of nitrogen and phosphorus loads in the Yellow River Basin during 2006-2017?显示文摘The Yellow River Basin (YRB) plays a very important role in China’s economic and social development and ecological security.In particular,the ecosystem of the YRB is sensitive to climate change.However,the change of nutrient fluxes in this region during the past years and its main driving forces remain unclear.In this study,a hydrologic model R System for Spatially Referenced Regressions on Watershed Attributes (RSPARROW) was employed to simulate the spatio-temporal variations in the fluxes of total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) during the period of 2006-2017.The results suggested that the TN and TP loads increased by 138%and 38%during 2006-2014,respectively,and decreased by 66%and 71%from 2015 to 2017,respectively.During the period of 2006-2017,the annual mean fluxes of TN and TP in the YRB were in the range of 3.9 to 591.6 kg/km^(2)/year and 1.7 to 12.0 kg/km^(2)/year,respectively.TN flux was low in the upstream area of the Yellow River,and presented a high level in the middle and lower reaches.However,the flux of TP in Gansu and Ningxia section was slightly higher than that in the lower reaches of the Yellow River.Precipitation and point source are the key drivers for the inter-annual changes of TN loads in most regions of the YRB.While the inter-annual variations of TP loads in the whole basin are mainly driven by the point source.This study demonstrates the important impacts of climate change on nutrient loads in the YRB.Moreover,management measures should be taken to reduce pollution sources and thus provide solid basis for control of nitrogen and phosphorus in the YRB. | Jiaqi Zheng Xianghui Cao Chunzi Ma Nanyan Weng Shouliang Huo | 2023 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2023,,4: | 1 |

| 14 | Feasibility and physics potential of detecting ^(8)B solar neutrinos at JUNO显示文摘The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory(JUNO)features a 20 kt multi-purpose underground liquid scintillator sphere as its main detector.Some of JUNO's features make it an excellent location for^8B solar neutrino measurements,such as its low-energy threshold,high energy resolution compared with water Cherenkov detectors,and much larger target mass compared with previous liquid scintillator detectors.In this paper,we present a comprehensive assessment of JUNO's potential for detecting^8B solar neutrinos via the neutrino-electron elastic scattering process.A reduced 2 MeV threshold for the recoil electron energy is found to be achievable,assuming that the intrinsic radioactive background^(238)U and^(232)Th in the liquid scintillator can be controlled to 10^(-17)g/g.With ten years of data acquisition,approximately 60,000 signal and 30,000 background events are expected.This large sample will enable an examination of the distortion of the recoil electron spectrum that is dominated by the neutrino flavor transformation in the dense solar matter,which will shed new light on the inconsistency between the measured electron spectra and the predictions of the standard three-flavor neutrino oscillation framework.IfDelta m^(2)_(21)=4.8times10^(-5);(7.5times10^(-5))eV^(2),JUNO can provide evidence of neutrino oscillation in the Earth at approximately the 3sigma(2sigma)level by measuring the non-zero signal rate variation with respect to the solar zenith angle.Moreover,JUNO can simultaneously measureDelta m^2_(21)using^8B solar neutrinos to a precision of 20% or better,depending on the central value,and to sub-percent precision using reactor antineutrinos.A comparison of these two measurements from the same detector will help understand the current mild inconsistency between the value of Delta m^2_(21)reported by solar neutrino experiments and the KamLAND experiment. | 15 | Carbonate dynamics in a tropical coastal system in the South China Sea featuring upwelling, river plumes and submarine groundwater discharge显示文摘This study examined carbonate dynamics in the northwestern South China Sea(NWSCS),an area jointly influenced by upwelling,river plumes and submarine groundwater discharge.Data were obtained from two cruises conducted in summer 2009 and 2012.In 2009,a high salinity-low temperature water mass occurred nearshore off northeastern Hainan Island,indicative of upwelling,commonly referred to as HNEU.A river plume fueled primarily by local rivers and characterized by low salinity and high temperature was observed in the NWSCS off the mainland roughly along the 30 m isobath.In 2012,coastal upwelling off northeastern Hainan Island was not detectable at the surface,but was observed at a different location off eastern Hainan Island(HEU).River plume waters in 2012 were patchily distributed,with a low salinity zone further westerly than that in 2009 and another on the mid-shelf of the NWSCS sourced from the Pearl River which reached out~250 km from the mouth of the Pearl River Estuary.In 2009,elevated dissolved inorganic carbon(DIC)and total alkalinity(TA)occurred in the coastal plume,where submarine groundwater discharge contributed DIC and TA additions of 38.9±20.5 and 42.5±22.3μmol kg^(−1),respectively,with a DIC/TA ratio of~0.92,which made a minor contribution to the variation of seawater partial pressure of CO_(2)(pCO_(2)),pH and the aragonite saturation state index(Ω_(arag)).Additionally,high surface phytoplankton production consumed DIC of 10.0±10.4μmol kg^(−1) but did not significantly affect TA,which dominated pCO_(2) drawdown in the coastal plume water and increased the pH andΩ_(arag) at surface.Submarine groundwater discharge was also observed in the region influenced by upwelling,but to a lesser degree than that impacted by coastal plume.Lower pH andΩ_(arag) and higher pCO_(2) values than in offshore waters were observed downstream of the upwelling system,attributable largely to organic matter remineralization with a DIC addition of 23.8±8.4μmol kg^(−1).In 2012,submarine groundwater discharge was not detected but high phytoplankton production dominated carbonate dynamics in the coastal plume water with a net DIC consumption of 104.2μmol kg^(−1),which markedly drew down sea surface pCO_(2) and increased pH andΩ_(arag).In the Pearl River Plume,the solubility-driven CO_(2) sink exceeded biological CO_(2) uptake,resulting in an additional decrease of pH andΩ_(arag) and increase of seawater pCO_(2).Taken together,this study demonstrated complex spatial and year-to-year variability,and the controls of the carbonate system under the joint modulations of upwelling,river plumes and submarine groundwater discharge.A first order estimate that considered the rise of atmospheric CO_(2) and seawater temperature further suggested a high risk of ocean acidification in this coastal area by the end of this century,which could be amplified under the stresses of river plumes,submarine groundwater discharge and organic matter remineralization. | Wei YANG Xianghui GUO Zhimian CAO Jianzhong SU Liguo GUO Lifang WANG Yi XU Tao HUANG Yan LI Yanping XU Zhe WANG Guizhi WANG Minhan DAI | 2022 | Science China Earth Sciences2022,65,12: | 0 |
| 16 | The acceleration degradation processes of different aged refuses with the forced aeration for landfill reclamation显示文摘Forced aeration is one of the promising ways to accelerate landfill reclamation,and understanding the relation between aeration rates and waste properties is the prerequisite to implementing forced aeration under the target of energy saving and carbon reduction.In this work,landfill reclamation processes with forced aeration were simulated using aged refuses(ARs)of 1,4,7,10,and 13 disposal years,and the potential of field application was also investigated based on a field project,to identify the degradation rate of organic components,the O_(2)consumption efficiency and their correlations to microbes.It was found that the removal rate of organic matter declined from 20.3%(AR_(1))to 12.6%(AR_(13)),and that biodegradable matter(BDM)decreased from 5.2%to 2.4%at the set aeration rate of 0.12 L O_(2)/kg waste(Dry Matter,DM)/day.A linear relationship between the degradation rate constant(K)of BDM and disposal age(x)was established:K=−0.0002193x+0.0091(R^(2)=0.854),suggesting that BDM might be a suitable indicator to reflect the stabilization of ARs.The cellulose/lignin ratio decrease rate for AR1(18.3%)was much higher than that for AR13(3.1%),while the corresponding humic-acid/fulvic-acid ratio increased from 1.44 to 2.16.The dominant bacteria shifted from Corynebacterium(9.2%),Acinetobacter(6.6%),and Fermentimonas(6.5%),genes related to the decompose of biodegradable organics,to Stenotrophomonas(10.2%)and Clostridiales(3.7%),which were associated with humification.The aeration efficiencies of lab-scale tests were in the range of 5.4–11.8 g BDM/L O_(2)for ARs with disposal ages of 1–13 years,and in situ landfill reclamation,ARs with disposal ages of 10–18 years were around 1.9–8.8 g BDM/L O_(2),as the disposal age decreased.The increased discrepancy was observed in ARs at the lab-scale and field scale,indicating that the forced aeration rate should be adjusted based on ARs and the unit compartment combined,to reduce the operation cost. | Yihang Liu Chengqi Ning Qiujie Huang Zhaowen Cheng Weihua Cao Xianghui Wang Changfu Yang Hui Liu Jia Song Luochun Wang Ziyang Lou | 2023 | Waste Disposal and Sustainable Energy2023,5,3: | 0 |
