Investigating Lightning Characteristics through a Supercell Storm by Comprehensive Coordinated Observations over North China显示文摘Electrical characteristics of an isolated supercell storm observed on 13 June 2014 over Beijing were investigated using lightning data obtained from the Beijing Lightning Network, radar reflectivity, and hydrometeor retrievals during the 6-h lifetime.Positive cloud-to-ground(+CG)lightning took a high percentage of CG lightning. Before and during a hail event,+CG lightning was more frequent than negative cloud-to-ground(-CG)lightning,except that+CG lightning took a high percentage at the beginning and in the dissipating stage. After the hail event ended,-CG lightning dominated and reached its maximum value. An analysis of hydrometeors retrieved by X-band polarimetric radar revealed that the discharge concentrated in the convective region with graupel particles and hailstones, whereas graupel, snow and ice crystals in the stratiform region.Lightning radiation sources were located mainly in the convective region, some of which were distributed along a gradient of radar reflectivity from the convective region to the stratiform region. The indication is that the supercell demonstrated an inverted tripole charge structure before the hail event, which converted to a normal tripole structure after the hail event. | Dongxia LIU Xiushu QIE Yichen CHEN Zhuling SUN Shanfeng YUAN | 2020 | Advances in Atmospheric Sciences2020,37,8: | 4
Computational Methods for Prediction of Human Protein-Phenotype Associations:A Review显示文摘Deciphering the relationship between human proteins(genes)and phenotypes is one of the fundamental tasks in phenomics research. The Human Phenotype Ontology(HPO)builds upon a standardized logical vocabulary to describe the abnormal phenotypes encountered in human diseases and paves the way towards the computational analysis of their genetic causes. To date, many computational methods have been proposed to predict the HPO annotations of proteins. In this paper,we conduct a comprehensive review of the existing approaches to predicting HPO annotations of novel proteins, identifying missing HPO annotations, and prioritizing candidate proteins with respect to a certain HPO term. For each topic,we first give the formalized description of the problem, and then systematically revisit the published literatures highlighting their advantages and disadvantages, followed by the discussion on the challenges and promising future directions. In addition,we point out several potential topics to be worthy of exploration including the selection of negative HPO annotations and detecting HPO misannotations. We believe that this review will provide insight to the researchers in the field of computational phenotype analyses in terms of comprehending and developing novel prediction algorithms. | Lizhi Liu Shanfeng Zhu | 2021 | Phenomics2021,1,4: | 1
Understanding the dynamical-microphysical-electrical processes associated with severe thunderstorms over the Beijing metropolitan region显示文摘The Dynamical-microphysical-electrical Processes in Severe Thunderstorms and Lightning Hazards(STORM973)project conducted coordinated comprehensive field observations of thunderstorms in the Beijing metropolitan region(BMR)during the warm season from 2014 to 2018.The aim of the project was to understand how dynamical, microphysical and electrical processes interact in severe thunderstorms in the BMR,and how to assimilate lightning data in numerical weather prediction models to improve severe thunderstorm forecasts. The platforms used in the field campaign included the Beijing Lightning Network(BLNET,consisting of 16 stations),2 X-band dual linear polarimetric Doppler radars, and 4 laser raindrop spectrometers. The collaboration also made use of the China Meteorological Administration’s mesoscale meteorological observation network in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region.Although diverse thunderstorm types were documented,it was found that squall lines and multicell storms were the two major categories of severe thunderstorms with frequent lightning activity and extreme rainfall or unexpected local short-duration heavy rainfall resulting in inundations in the central urban area, influenced by the terrain and environmental conditions. The flash density maximums were found in eastern Changping District, central and eastern Shunyi District, and the central urban area of Beijing, suggesting that the urban heat island effect has a crucial role in the intensification of thunderstorms over Beijing. In addition, the flash rate associated with super thunderstorms can reach hundreds of flashes per minute in the central city regions. The super(5%of the total),strong(35%),and weak(60%)thunderstorms contributed about 37%,56%,and 7%to the total flashes in the BMR,respectively.Owing to the close connection between lightning activity and the thermodynamic and microphysical characteristics of the thunderstorms, the lightning flash rate can be used as an indicator of severe weather events, such as hail and short-duration heavy rainfall.Lightning data can also be assimilated into numerical weather prediction models to help improve the forecasting of severe convection and precipitation at the cloud-resolved scale, through adjusting or correcting the thermodynamic and microphysical parameters of the model. | Xiushu QIE Shanfeng YUAN Zhixiong CHEN Dongfeng WANG Dongxia LIU Mengyu SUN Zhuling SUN Abhay SRIVASTAVA Hongbo ZHANG Jingyu LU Hui XIAO Yongheng BI Liang FENG Ye TIAN Yan XU Rubin JIANG Mingyuan LIU Xian XIAO Shu DUAN Debin SU Chengyun SUN Wenjing XU Yijun ZHANG Gaopeng LU Da-Lin ZHANG Yan YIN Ye YU | 2021 | Science China Earth Sciences2021,64,1: | 1

Feasibility and physics potential of detecting ^(8)B solar neutrinos at JUNO显示文摘The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory(JUNO)features a 20 kt multi-purpose underground liquid scintillator sphere as its main detector. Some of JUNO's features make it an excellent location for^8B solar neutrino measurements, such as its low-energy threshold, high energy resolution compared with water Cherenkov detectors, and much larger target mass compared with previous liquid scintillator detectors. In this paper,we present a comprehensive assessment of JUNO's potential for detecting^8B solar neutrinos via the neutrino-electron elastic scattering process.A reduced 2 MeV threshold for the recoil electron energy is found to be achievable, assuming that the intrinsic radioactive background^(238)U and^(232)Th in the liquid scintillator can be controlled to 10^(-17)g/g.With ten years of data acquisition, approximately 60,000 signal and 30,000 background events are expected. This large sample will enable an examination of the distortion of the recoil electron spectrum that is dominated by the neutrino flavor transformation in the dense solar matter, which will shed new light on the inconsistency between the measured electron spectra and the predictions of the standard three-flavor neutrino oscillation framework.IfDelta m^(2)_(21)=4.8times10^(-5);(7.5times10^(-5))eV^(2),JUNO can provide evidence of neutrino oscillation in the Earth at approximately the 3sigma(2sigma)level by measuring the non-zero signal rate variation with respect to the solar zenith angle. Moreover,JUNO can simultaneously measureDelta m^2_(21)using^8B solar neutrinos to a precision of 20% or better, depending on the central value, and to sub-percent precision using reactor antineutrinos.A comparison of these two measurements from the same detector will help understand the current mild inconsistency between the value of Delta m^2_(21)reported by solar neutrino experiments and the KamLAND experiment. | 9 | BiodMHC:an online server for the prediction of MHC class Ⅱ-peptide binding affinity显示文摘Effective identification of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) molecules restricted peptides is a critical step in discovering immune epitopes. Although many online servers have been built to predict class Ⅱ MHC-peptide binding affinity, they have been trained on different datasets, and thus fail in providing a unified comparison of various methods. In this paper, we present our implementation of seven popular predictive methods, namely SMM-align, ARB, SVR-pairwise, Gibbs sampler, ProPred, LP-top2, and MHCPred, on a single web server named BiodMHC (http://gffzz1faacc889862489dhcovqvw5bwf0v656p.ffgz.tsg.suse.edu.cn/BiodMHC/index.html, the software is available upon request). Using a standard measure of AUC (Area Under the receiver operating characteristic Curves), we compare these methods by means of not only cross validation but also prediction on independent test datasets. We find that SMM-align, ProPred, SVR-pairwise, ARB, and Gibbs sampler are the five best-performing methods. For the binding affinity prediction of class Ⅱ MHC-peptide, BiodMHC provides a convenient online platform for researchers to obtain binding information simultaneously using various methods. | Lian Wang Danling Pan Xihao Hu Jinyu Xiao Yangyang Gao Huifang Zhang Yan Zhang Juan Liu Shanfeng Zhu | 2009 | Journal of Genetics and Genomics2009,36,5: | 0
Influence of energy bandwidth of pink beam on small angle X-ray scattering显示文摘Background Compared with the traditional monochromatic synchrotron radiation beam,a pink beam is a quasimonochromatic beam which can be obtained by screening a harmonic of the undulator. The energy bandwidth(E/E)of a pink beam is about 10−2.Despite the intensity gain from the quasi-monochromatic beam, the decrease in the energy resolution will lead the collected data to be smeared.Purpose To study the influence of the energy bandwidth on the small angle X-ray scattering(SAXS)by experiments and verify the feasibility of SAXS with a pink beam.Method Firstly, the influence of different energy bandwidths on SAXS has been studied by simulation and experiment. Then,TEM tests have been performed and compared with the experimental results.Result It has been shown that the scattering curves deviate slightly from the traditional monochromatic ones. This deviation does not influence the data processing for the maximum deviation of the results is just less than 2%.In return, the gain in the intensity(one to two orders of magnitude)makes the pink beam very important for the time-resolved SAXS.Further, the results of TEM and SAXS have shown an excellent agreement. Conclusion Thiswork proves that the pink beam could be used for SAXS directly without a desmearing procedure.Benefiting from the increase in the beam intensity, the exposure time can be greatly shortened, thus enhancing the utilization efficiency of the synchrotron radiation. | Shanfeng Wang Yaxiang Liang Bingjie Wang Weiwei Dong Lingfei Hu Qun Ouyang Peng Liu | 2019 | Radiation Detection Technology and Methods2019,3,1: | 0
Propagation of positive, negative, and recoil leaders in upward lightning flashes显示文摘Leader propagation is a fundamental issue in lightning physics. The propagation characteristics of positive leaders and negative leaders are summarized and compared based on data from high-speed camera and electromagnetic field in rocket-triggered lightning and tower-initiated lightning discharges; available channel base current data recorded in rocket-triggered lightning are also used. The negative leaders propagate in a stepped fashion accompanied by many branches. The stems ahead of the negative leader tip determine the manner and direction of the leader propagation, and even the branching and winding of the lightning channel. The impulsive current, electromagnetic field, and related optical images suggest that the positive leader may develop in a step-like fashion at its initial stage of triggered lightning. However, the stepping processes of the positive leader are obviously different from those of the negative leader. Tower-initiated lightning revealed that the most conspicuous characteristics of the stepwise positive leader involve the intermittent brush-like corona zone in front of the leader tip and the luminosity enhancement of the channel behind the tip. In rockettriggered lightning flashes, the charge transferred during an individual step for the negative leader was nearly an order greater than for the positive counterpart. The successive streamers ahead of the leader tip are essential for both negative and positive leader propagation, and the stems could be formed from one or more streamers in the previous negative streamer zone with the main leader channel dim. High-resolution observation of tower lightning also revealed a new type of bidirectional recoil leader, with polarity contrary to the traditional one, traversing in negative channels associated with tower-initiated and rocket-triggered lightning. | XiuShu Qie ShanFeng Yuan HongBo Zhang RuBin Jiang ZhiJun Wu MingYuan Liu ZhuLing Sun YunJiao Pu JinLiang Li Abhay Srivastava ZiLong Ma GaoPeng Lu | 2019 | Earth and Planetary Physics2019,3,2: | 0
Accurate reconstruction algorithm for bilateral differential phase signals显示文摘Background The differential phase computed tomography(DP-CT)imaging is a kind of X-ray-phase-based CT methods, which is widely used in various X-ray imaging laboratories. At present,a collection of projections with the horizontal direc-tion(perpendicular to the sample rotation axis)DP information is often acquired in DP-CT.In an ideal experiment,if the background is zero, then we can accurately reconstruct the information of each direction of the sample with horizontal data only.Actually, background information will produce streaking artifacts to affect the resolution in directions other than the horizontal direction.Purpose To mitigate the streaking artifacts in the conventionally reconstructed DP-CT images.Method This study develops a novel analytical DP-CT reconstruction framework by jointly using the bilateral DP information obtained along two perpendicular directions. In addition,a new data acquisition scheme is also proposed to quickly acquire the bilateral DP signal without the need of changing the direction of refraction signal acquisition. Results Experimental results demonstrate that this new algorithm is able to greatly reduce the streaking artifacts on DP-CT images. | Qili He Yan Wang Panyun Li Chunxia Yao Jin Zhang Tianyu Fu Kai Zhang Qingxi Yuan Wanxia Huang Shanfeng Wang Peiping Zhu Peng Liu | 2021 | Radiation Detection Technology and Methods2021,5,3: | 0
NetGO 3.0:Protein Language Model Improves Large-scale Functional Annotations显示文摘As one of the state-of-the-art automated function prediction(AFP)methods,NetGO 2.0 integrates multi-source information to improve the performance. However,it mainly utilizes the proteins with experimentally supported functional annotations without leveraging valuable information from a vast number of unannotated proteins.Recently, protein language models have been proposed to learn informative representations[e.g.,Evolutionary Scale Modeling(ESM)-1b embedding] from protein sequences based on self-supervision.Here,we represented each protein by ESM-1b and used logistic regression(LR)to train a new model,LR-ESM,for AFP.The experimental results showed that LR-ESM achieved comparable performance with the best-performing component of NetGO 2.0.Therefore,by incorporating LR-ESM into NetGO 2.0,we developed NetGO 3.0 to improve the performance of AFP extensively. | Shaojun Wang Ronghui You Yunjia Liu Yi Xiong Shanfeng Zhu | 2023 | Genomics, Proteomics & Bioinformatics2023,21,2: | 0
Statistical characteristics and mechanism analysis of adhered particle on surface under strong electric field显示文摘Insulators on high-voltage Uansmission lines are almost the only man-made structures on the Earth's surface intended for long-term operation under strong electric fields. After samples of natural contaminant particles were collected from insulator surfaces in China, it was found that the particle diameter distribution (PDD) was mainly concentrated in the 5-50 μm range. To analyze the statistical characteristics of these particles, this work studies the physical processes of particle collision and adhesion using the theories of hydrodynamics and collision dynamics. The physical model considers coupling of the fluid field and the electric field, introduces an adhesion criterion, and establishes a particle and surface collision model. The effects of relative humidity, wind speed, aerodynamic shape, electric field type, and electric field strength on particle adhesion were analyzed. The results show that the relative humidity and wind speed have very significant effects and the influences of the electric field type and the electric field strength are obvious, but the in fluence of the aerodynamic shape is relatively weak. The simulation results support the statistical characteristics determined in this work. The physical model established here provides reference values for study of the adhesion characteristics of particles on surfaces under electric fields. | Yunpeng Jiang Lee Li Ming Lu Rumeng Wang Yiwen Jiang Shanfeng Liu Chao Su | 2019 | Particuology2019,17,2: | 0
Lightning Nowcasting with an Algorithm of Thunderstorm Tracking Based on Lightning Location Data over the Beijing Area显示文摘A thunderstorm tracking algorithm is proposed to nowcast the possibility of lightning activity over an area of concern by using the total lightning data and neighborhood technique. The lightning radiation sources observed from the Beijing Lightning Network(BLNET)were used to obtain information about the thunderstorm cells, which are significantly valuable in real-time.The boundaries of thunderstorm cells were obtained through the neighborhood technique. After smoothing, these boundaries were used to track the movement of thunderstorms and then extrapolated to nowcast the lightning approaching in an area of concern. The algorithm can deliver creditable results prior to a thunderstorm arriving at the area of concern, with accuracies of 63%,80%,and 91%for lead times of 30,15,and 5 minutes, respectively. The real-time observations of total lightning appear to be significant for thunderstorm tracking and lightning nowcasting,as total lightning tracking could help to fill the observational gaps in radar reflectivity due to the attenuation by hills or other obstacles. The lightning data used in the algorithm performs well in tracking the active thunderstorm cells associated with lightning activities. | Abhay SRIVASTAVA Dongxia LIU Chen XU Shanfeng YUAN Dongfang WANG Ogunsua BABALOLA Zhuling SUN Zhixiong CHEN Hongbo ZHANG | 2022 | Advances in Atmospheric Sciences2022,39,1: | 0
